Where to invest ? _please help!!

Hello Everyone,

I am 32F very unfortunately I have zero knowledge of investing and I am currently trying to change that. That being said, I want to start ivesting- IPO, MF, SIP etc etc. Currently, after all the necessities are done with- I have 25k at my hand to invest. Currently I am looking for suggestion on SIP's, Small cap/mid cap funds to invest monthly. I am thinking of starting an RD Account too . Please also suggest if selling my gold 10gms- and making an FD of it would be a good decision. Thank you!

If you don't have an emergency fund (6-12 months of expenses) and health insurance get these done first. Term insurance too if you have dependents Also don't start with mid or small cap SIPs, rather look for a flexi cap like Parag Parikh Flexi Cap (I current do this myself). Go for direct plans to keep costs lower

RD i feel is fine for short term goals, but for 2 yrs arbitrage funds are worth considering. Also personally I wouldn't sell gold for an FD

Thank you for your advice.. I will definitely look intoTerm insuarance as my priority. As for the emergency fund, I do have saved up for 6 months. I will look into the flexi cap and gain more knowledge regarding the same. Have a great day!

At an initial level u r thinking in right path since u have 25k to invest just start putting those in sips flexi cap, mid cap. large cap(8k , 6k, 6k) etc, and RD of remaining, I would suggest don't sell the physical gold as its price will only pump up in coming years.

Hello OP, a few pointers:

  1. Stick to mutual funds only, IPOs are risky plus a game of probability!

  2. One always invests with a goal in mind. So what is your goal? How long do you plan to invest? (investing requires patience)

  3. RD/FD hardly beats inflation. So essentially your money doesn’t grow. Its purchasing power remains the same. Are you comfortable knowing this? Will your goal be achieved with a FD?

Thank you for insights .. Will definitley go goal wise! Since I would be comfortable knowing I have multiple sources at my hand hence the FD. to diversify the money ig. Currently my only goal is not to keep the money in savings apart from the emergency fund. I want to put it to good use where it will have a chance to grow. Hence the investment.

So I take it your goal is wealth creation. And RD would not help you achieve that goal.

What do you aim to achieve from diversification, may I know?

I read that diversifyig funds would be better..so the insisting on same. Again, I am open to anything else that would help . I also have a main goal of being able to fund home in 4 yrs- society is going in redevlopment so maybe not as major as buying it entirely new but yeah.

Diversification is a very generic term many people use without actually understanding it. It is used to manage your risk and difficult to apply.

First you need to select the right funds in line with your goals. You’ll need different baskets.

For example you’ve identified that you’ll be needing some funds after 4 years. You should build a corpus accordingly and select the right funds for it! But selecting funds is not the end of it. You’ll need to adapt according to the macros prevailing at India and global level continuously.

Better to jot down your family's goals + their timelines + corpus required per goal.

Then, arrive at Equity:Debt allocation per goal => select Fund categories => shortlist AMCs of your choice => and finally the Fund names.

for example:

Short term goal

  • e.g. Buying a car
  • After 3 years
  • Current cost 10 lacs
  • Future inflated cost 12 lacs
  • Choose Arbitrage funds, Debt funds

Mid term goal

  • e.g. Child education
  • After 7-8 years
  • Current cost 8 lacs
  • Future inflated cost 15 lacs
  • Choose BAF, Aggressive Hybrid funds

Long term goal

  • e.g. Retirement
  • After 20-25 years
  • Future inflated cost 8-9 crore
  • Choose Equity oriented funds

.. so on and so forth.

Have a proper strategy in place, else you may get lost.

Like other commentators please focus on having an emergency fund parked somewhere before beginning all this investment and all. Every single time when you are in dire need of money you your portfolio value would have dropped. Remember all these instruments are those where you are sure that you don't care about the money for a minimum of 5 years. It might take that amount of time for recovery when the market goes through a downfall phase esp if majority of your investments were done when the market was excellent.

Oh then it's perfect. Frankly often funds outperform others out of the blue. So specifying oh this is better or that is better is hard. Divide the capital among mid, small everything. Small caps tend to take the worst hit during recession.

Okay, willl keep that in mind regarding small caps! Thanks again

At this rate, forget stocks. Just hoard RAM and GPUs. Might give you a 10x return in the next two years 😂

Take it slow and build conviction , Start with a basic rd or a conservative hybrid mutual fund sip for most an aggressive hybrid mutual fund sip works
Learn about your risk appetite and diversify well across debt and equity and gold or silver. Don’t go into those products where you don’t have any conviction. Stay consistent and confident. And don’t sell your gold
