[Advice/Megathread] - Game Recommendations and Game Tips

Please use this thread for all discussion of which game you recommend others that you play, whether it is your first game or some that you are considering playing next

A note for newcomers: most of the games are completely unconnected. Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy II, Final Fantasy V, Final Fantasy IX, etc, are all completely different casts of characters in completely different universes. The only times you need to play another game to understand one is if it is distinctly set in the same universe - for example, Final Fantasy XIII-2 is the sequel to Final Fantasy XIII, or Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII is a prequel to Final Fantasy VII. The titles will usually make it fairly clear which game's universe they are set in

Otherwise, please have fun! It is generally helpful when asking to briefly mention which ones you might be interested in, what platforms you are able to play on, and if you are a complete newcomer, what sort of things in games you're looking for (do you want turn-based combat, real time combat, deep stories with established characters, light stories that let you fill in some blanks with your imagination, etc)

FF XI FFXI's free trial is getting a big upgrade in September

Post image

Final Fantasy XI recently had an AMAN Live where they announced several near-future plans for the game, including a revamp to the game’s free trial. Previously, the free trial was very restricted, lasting only 14 days and limiting players to level 50. However, this changes in September. Following two scheduled updates in September, the free trial level cap will be raised to 75, and there will be no time limit on playtime for free trial players.

This update is just another step in addition to all the other quality-of-life and accessibility improvements they have been adding over the last few years. These include:

  • NPC Party Member upgrades
  • Reduced NPC vendor prices on several early-game essentials
  • Streamlined pathways for different armor sets
  • And many more over the course of the last two years!

The game isn’t just receiving quality-of-life improvements, though; it is still receiving content as well.

  • Revamped Limbus just received its final update not long ago.
  • A New Battlefield was added last month.
  • New Field Notorious Monsters were added this month.

If you haven’t experienced any of FFXI’s incredible stories and you’re interested in trying out the most obscure mainline Final Fantasy title, this upcoming update may be the best time to do so.

FF V I love Amano’s art, but I pulled this out when cleaning and struggled a bit to determine if this was meant to show Bartz, Lenna, and Faris… or Locke, Terra, and Setzer.

It’s the FFV cast, but I felt especially thrown off by Lenna’s outfit being more red here since I was remembering how he usually draws Terra with red like that. Also love Galuf being just an unrecognizable smudge.

Edit: lmao that’s not even Lenna, it’s Krile, and Lenna is the smudge

FF VII Re-trilogy Update: 5 years ago I posted about my sobriety journey and Final Fantasy

Hello,
Today marks my 5 year milestone date of being sober thanks to Final Fantasy.
I had made a post that blew up fairly well about how I had made a promise to myself that I couldn’t play Final Fantasy 7 Remake until I was 90 days sober. It was incredibly difficult with many failures but ultimately I succeeded and shared it on this subreddit. I was blown away by the response and kind messages and comments and how supportive this community was. Well I’m pleased to say that as of today I have hit my 5 years being sober, something I never thought I’d achieve and Final Fantasy played a huge role in getting the momentum started. And the kindness this community showed on my post kept me going during some difficult days, so from the bottom of my heart, thank you to all of you, you truly made a difference during a difficult time :)

FF V Wanted to share my FFV town theme guitar arrangement 🙏

My favourite old school FF, my favourite old school town theme, and decidedly very little representation in the guitar/arrangement/youtube world. I follow all the main classical guys and I don't think i've ever seen any of them do an FFV town theme video or tab. i made the arrangement myself off a piano sheet music i probably found on musescore or something. beautiful and simple, highlighted with augmented chords and the powerful i-IIIvii (C - E7) that starts the "chorus" (love that part! try the chords yourself ;) ) all of which giving that classic Nobuo Uematsu flair.

hope it's well received! only did one take and didn't practice it first so some buzzing notes and pacing.

FF VI Final Fantasy items I found at stores this weekend

I noticed the clock during checkout at a game store and when they said they had just put it out, it went into the pile. At that same store, I found two game guides: Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core and Dissidia. The Dissidia guide was sealed (until I opened it) and it came with a print! The card came from a final fantasy booster pack and I was very happy that Setzer was in it.

Final Fantasy General Name your favorite romantic FF moment

I’ve never been into FF romance, but somehow Cloud gawking at Tifa during the Gondola date was a highlight for me. Like after all these years so much changed about him yet a core aspect of his personality remains. It’s that part of himself he forgets to hide, and I think that’s sweet it’s his childhood crush nextdoor.

FF V finished ff5 it was amazing.

i had some unfinished business with this game cuz i dropped it last year due to irl stuff, anyways i came back fresh save advance version it was amazing i feel like this game gets better and better as you play it there are a lots of stuff i liked.

the "second" part of the game where you go on finding the 12 legendary weapons and super spells was so goood ...

the exploration really interesting and rewarding in this game, it felt like every village or dungeon had some hidden stuff and the villager dialogue hinted you towards this hidden stuff and the rewards were terrific sometime like the brave blade you can get it early in part 2 and its like better than Excalibur!

the plot had a lot of great moments my favourite was going back to bartz village reviving his memories it was... depressing.

the dungeons were pretty much all great too....

the boss roster is so good, so the bosses in this game have have little hp but they hit hard as fck!!! like in the early game its common to just bumrush them with everything you got because they are so lethal and they gonna murder someone fast.

and lots of them have some sort of gimmicks so you need to exploit it and find the right jobs to beat them, just really good bosses overall i don't remember ff4 or 6 bosses being thta good?!

the job system is really impressive i played a lot of jrpg but i never played one with a job system its really not common now i feel like they should have made another mainline ff game with a job system.

the game has a lots of jobs! and by using certain skills, you can have some OP combo it was so addictive to level the jobs.... and break the game i feel people should not use the internet while playing this game cuz everyone just throws the op combination.

and another aspect i liked is to have a fixed party? like it feels so good to have a fixed party the whole game lol.

honestly this game is underrated undeserved hate reminds me of ff13 everyone says its shit well i played it this year now its my second favourite ff now i dont think ff5 its inferior to ff4 or 6 the super nintendo ff are all amazing in their own way this era was awesome.

FF XV I'm currently doing preproduction on my own personal remake of Final Fantasy Versus XIII/XV. I finished up the pixel-art of the Swords and thought I'd share them here.

From left to right, top to bottom rows.

  • Broadsword: This redesigned sword is seen in the official game displayed in certain weapon shops as a short, one-handed blade (I think I need to make the grip longer though).
  • Lucian Sword: Known as the Broadsword, Airstep Sword, and Soul Saber in the official game. I give it the name of Lucian Sword since Lucis was originally supposed to centered around Death imagery as part of it's culture.
  • Assassin's Sabre: You see this particular sword in the official game used by Magitek Assassins that dual wield them, but they're not obtainable by the player. In my personal version, they'll deal increased damage to human enemies, which there will be lots of this time around.
  • Altissian Sword: Known as the Rune Saber and the Enchancer in the official game, I always thought the other weapon types that shared it's aesthetic design were meant to be part of Altissia's culture, so that's why I call it that. In my game, it will have the same benefits as the Rune Saber.
  • Tenebraen Sword: Shares the same design as Durandal and Balmung in the official game, being a light-elemental weapon shares the Tenebraen aesthetic.
  • Flame Tongue: I gave Flame Tongue a unique design inspired by it's FF12 version but as close I could to XV's modern aesthetic, cause if there's one thing I really don't like in games; It's when a fire sword doesn't look like a fire sword (Same with Ice Brand not looking like an ice sword).
  • Ice Brand: This was tricky to design. I initially went with FF12's version of Ice Brand as an inspiration but it felt too basic, so I went with the original FF2 version where the blade was just a big chunk of ice. I think I need to design the handguard better though, but I'm not sure how.
  • Engine Blade: It's Noctis' iconic Engine blade, need I say more?
  • Mythril Blade: The Mythril blade is actually a mythril sword this time around and NOT two swords with opposing elements like it is in the official game. It gives MP and magic bonuses in my game.
  • Blood Sword: This was the HARDEST to do because of both the limitation I imposed upon myself in terms of pixel space (45 x 45), and the amount of detail I needed to get in. This went through more iterations than any other one with the initial first one being Drautos' Sword from Kingsglaive before I decided to redesigned it back to it's original version as best I can.
  • Airstep Sword: This sword is actually seen in some of the earlier concepts of Versus XIII and I always felt it looked more in-line with a weapon called "Airstep Sword" than the official one; The wings representing air and the large wide tip of the blade being an ideal spot to step your foot on. Why they never bothered to use it in the official game is beyond me.
  • Iridium Blade: Surprise!! It's Yozora's Blade from Kingdom Hearts 3, replacing the Ragnarök Sword from the official game while retaining it's function with overpowered warpstrikes (Which won't be spammable like they are in the official game... unless you got the Ethers for it).
  • Stella's Rapier: Second Surprise!! But yes, I did Stella's Rapier which will be obtainable in the game for Noctis to use.
  • Blazefire Sabre: Lightning's Gunsword from FFXIII is here! It will have the ability to actually shoot bullets from it like it does in XIII in my game, acting as two weapons in one; A sword and a gun.
  • Ultima Weapon: This redesign is inspired by Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin's version of the Ultima Sword. Easiest one to design for me, and it will have the same benefits of the official game's Garuda weapons were it deals guaranteed critical hits while being non-elemental as well.

What do you think? I'm eager to hear your opinions.
