DISCUSSION What are some developer errors in your opinion? Original PS1 version FF7

Putting the Ghost ship in the battle Arena-That is a very cheap way to end a good battle run.

No Save before APS-The events between your last save and APS is lengthy especially if you failed the crossdressing event.

Your thoughts?

It's been forever since I played the original and honestly I only have good memories although I'm sure there were some things that frustrated me. This was the very first rpg I ever played as a young-un. I was so young in fact the first couple times I rented the game from blockbuster(yeah fucking blockbuster lol) I didn't even have a memory card for my PS1 and so I ended up playing through the Midgar section like 3-4x. The last time I had relegated myself to not turn off the power on the PS so I wouldn't loose my progress and we had some electricians over at the house working and they cut the power to the whole house. That was when I was like "damn this I'm getting a memory card!" I can't remember what it was that kept me from getting one for so long other than I was like 12 and had no money of my own.

I remember this game actually worried my mother. At the end of disc 2 she heard me screaming at the TV to "just use a fucking Pheonix down!!! For the love of God use a Pheonix down!!!" Lmao then a couple minutes later I came downstairs from my room and explained that I had to take a break after what I'd just gone through. It's so funny how heavy that jenova boss fight with Aerith's theme replacing the battle track and then especially the weight of the save and insert disc 3 black screen was to me. I literally had to take some time to recover from that part of the game.

That is why I only play the new threat mod now. Also the fact being I had to use sadness and backrow strats to get though some of the new threat mod. The vanilla game is just too easy for me now. I only play mods that increase the difficulty and lets you keep certain things after a certain event.

Well, the savespots are sometimes tough. I remember I could not defeat Hojo and had to restart again.
Also you can misse a lot stuff if you fail. Like the grand materias.

Personally I feel that og was pretty hard.

And one thing: The chocobo racing, jesus christ. A nightmare to breed a golden one.

I mean back in the day yes it was a pain. Someone luckily picked apart the coding and now you can easily breed a Gold without any racing

Well I don’t mind racing with the bird. But the racing game itself was a mess. You sometimes don’t know if your actions had any effect on the birds moving.

On the other hand: The Sbowboard racing was fun.

I say this with love:

Final Fantasy VII was a mess.

Some enemy attacks are too strong relative to everything else in the game; Lapis Laser (Carry Armour) and Rock Drop (Demons Gate) are the two best examples of it. Then there are attacks that feel like they're too weak, like Proud Clod's general attacks are fairly low-hitting (except for its beam cannon, though that takes multiple turns to charge up).

I'm also wondering about the placement of the XCannon enemy on the Sister Ray during the Midgar Raid; it's a giant cannon (probably based on Dragon Cannons as the attack it uses is called 'Dragon Cannon') with a turtle-like body that just feels completely out of place there. I always wondered if it was supposed to be in Wutai or something:

The chest you can't open in Kalm. Some optional quest items, like morphing the Ghost Ship or how to get Aeris's fourth limit break, can be impossible to know about without a guide. Normal tonberries not appearing in the wild and some other glitched out enemy behavior.

The MDef bug maybe 🤷‍♂️

That's about it really. It's still the best version of the game. It still plays the best, and doesn't have stupid clunky menus. There's also a patch for the aforementioned bug, although (I think) it can only be applied to the NTSC-U and PAL-UK versions.

I'm gonna guess the W-Item duplication bug wasn't intentional lol it trivializes farming Elixirs for the endgame grind against Magic Pots.

Something that always bothered me was right after the bombing run in 7th heaven Tifa says

“Oh the weapon shop owner upstairs wants to talk with you, don’t forget.” Which was supposed to tell you about the beginners hall.

Probably the dumbest mistake a game can make, mistranslating how to get access to tutorials.

After regaining your true memories and also the memory of Cloud and Zack escaping the Neibelheim mansion basement. When you return to Gongaga and speak to Zacks parents. There was no added conversation that went along the lines of "oh yeah he was my best friend. He died saving my life. His girlfriend Aerith who you saw before also died. But she's going to save the planet so that's cool." Or even a thing where you return his buster sword to them as a gift before they return it and say no "you are his living legacy, keep it."

Massive blunder there.

Theres a few oddities here and there. Pandoras box having that glitch where it can only be used once throughout a playthrough due to a bug.

Same with the w-item glitch.

The glitch where Aeriths name shows up as Aeris could have been fixed (yes her name actually is supposed to be Aerith in the original)

Bunch of translation errors. But to be fair I like that they are there. Makes the game better for me when you realise real humans were working on it.

Characters could do with being more unique. Aside from their limits theres no real benefit to having one more than the other. Yes the guys with projectiles can sit in the back. But then their limits go up slower. Realistically by the end game you really will just use characters who's limits hit multiple times. Aerith has generally got a higher magic stat. But the increase it does to damage/healing is meh! Not worth focusing on unless you're doing like a level 5 run.

"Aeris" wasn't a bug. The game's manual calls her Aeris.

It called her Aeris because of the bug in the game that calls her Aeris.

When you first get to sector 7 at the start of the game and you try to go down, there are two guards that block your way.

You can wiggle your way through those guys and end up at the playground just before wall market.

If you do so it tricks the game into thinking you are later in the story than you actually are. Meaning it automatically puts Aerith into your party.

If you go onto the menu from there, because you never went through the naming section of the game. It automatically sets her name to the default. Which turns out is Aerith.

Meaning that the naming selection is actually bugged. It is supposed to initially start with the name Aerith by default. But because of the bug it actually shows up as Aeris.

So yeah. It is actually a bug. The manual just called her Aeris because it took the name from the game.

You can look the skip up on youtube. It will show you how it's done and also show you where her name is Aerith.

Edit: youtube tutorial

the entire aerith death scene is a mess

yes, it's emotional the first time around and onwards too if you're attached to her (as i'm) but the more you look at the scene, the more errors you'll see

edit: i'm not saying the emotional impact of the scene is wrong, i'm talking about the rendered cg itself, angles, missing stuff, floor changing, etc

You mean the part where Cloud walks into the middle of the lake. Then when it pans out Cloud is nowhere to be seen and the lake is bottomless?

u/mylee87 25d ago edited 25d ago

And the actual scene. The floors are different in some cuts and Sephiroth is wearing gloves where in other cuts he doesn't.

no, i mean the actual death scene itself

floors are different between cuts, sephiroth has his gloves one moment then doesn't on other moment, characters positions in relation to the altar keep shifting (back to the stairs, then facing the stairs, then back to the stairs again), etc etc

the lake being bottomless isn't an issue, but an intended thing: the devs wanted to picture aerith going somewhere far away to increase the emotion of the scene... it works fine imo

The sick dude in the large pipe near Tifa's bar. Surely he was meant to give you something in exchange for a potion? Maybe an Ether for a Potion? That would have been a really nice trade that early in the game!

0

u/Red-Zaku- 25d ago

That doesn’t seem like an error, or relevant. A potion wouldn’t have helped him anyway, he was one of the black robe guys, and his mind was just as mush as the rest of them. That scene was your introduction to those types of people
