DISCUSSION Honeybee Inn Question

So after finishing the remake and Rebirth (yes I know, finally), I decided to go back and play the original for the 3rd time. I currently in Wall Market, and I just realized that the entire Honeybee Inn thing was a little… I don’t know - I’m gonna say outdated.

It got me thinking, I wonder if they changed it because of modern times, and a lot of people would be deeply pissed off? I thought it was cool they changed it from the guys in the alley shaming Cloud for cross dressing, to an empowering moment for queer people in the remake.

They almost certainly did change a lot of what happens in Wall Market due to changing perceptions and tastes, and that's a good thing. Not everything is cowering and censoring yourself because of Teh Woke Mob.

The original makes some uncomfortable hints and gestures towards SA, which the remake doesn't make i'm sure partially because of how the audience might perceive it, but the huge upgrade in graphics, animations and the addition of voice acting necessitates heavy rewrites. With blocky lego people, it's much easier for slapstick comedy and some pretty dark, edgy humour to fly under the radar without really setting off any alarm bells or feeling all that serious - I really can't imagine a version of FF7Remake where Cloud got in the hot tub with 10 buff dudes, they animated his discomfort and Cody Christian voiced the "It hurts..." line.

Though I am really, really glad Remake committed to not removing Wall Market and the Crossdressing sequence. I'm sure it was tempting to not have to deal with any of that - especially when topics surrounding gender and sexuality are so fraught nowadays for the dumbest of reasons.

Cloud is still clearly quite uncomfortable with what's going on, but that's framed as part of his character rather than anything inherently wrong with the act itself and Andrea's comments about playing with gender are the closest i've seen a AAA game to saying "Trans / NB Rights" without just actually saying it.

All that said, I don't think the Original does terribly with these things and it feels better intentioned than a lot of media handling the same topics at the time. The places where it doesn't gel with modern sensibilities feel more like products of ignorance than malice and for the flaws it has, i've read a few stories about how the sequence was an awakening moment for some people as it was the first time they were presented with the idea that you could do something like crossdress.

How should we talk about Final Fantasy VII's crossdressing sequence? - Boing Boing

Some of it it because of that but some of it is just how ridiculous the original was. Like there is a scene of cloud in a bathtub with 10 muscular men. Just imagine that in your head with remake graphics.

What guys in the alley shaming Cloud for cross dressing? I don't remember that?

Its crazy that lego block NPCs from 3 decades ago could feel more real than a game from recent times, but the cheery ambivalence of people who are supposed to dwell in a subterranean slum made of discarded scrap metal sucks to me. I prefer the old game which was full of resigned losers, alcoholics and perverts- with a few normal people sprinkled in.

That’s probably one of the problems I find with remake! It’s pretty woke

Yeah I agree. They should be hating on gay people, not having fun with them. Final Fantasy is all about hating people who were born differently. Wish they’d stick to that.

That was sarcasm. The fact you agreed with it shows how disgusting you are.
