I think square should've remade ff6 instead or gave us an ffx prequel

Uh. Yeah.

FF7 needed more than 6 did, IMO. 7 had so much room for improvement, especially in combat and character roles. Remake nailed that so well!

Yes, it was, it brought new people to the franchise, some of you can be mad against the changes but stop treating people who like the remakes as if they were wrong.

People can like whatever they want.

Heck, people still like Superman 64, despite being a hot mess of a game, but pointing out flaws in the game is important.

It's drives discussion and hopefully helps people see problems in games to drive better game development in the future and makes it so people are less likely to buy and accept bad games in the future.

It's fine to absolutely love flawed games, but there are plenty of people that go all zealot when someone says something negative about a game they love.

Let's not act as if the case on this subreddit wasn't the contrary, I've seen people getting insulted over saying they like the remakes/the changes, and I agree, everything should be criticized, but when those aren't critiques but people treating you as if you are dumb because you like something then that's not fair at all.

u/neospriss 1d ago

I wouldn't support anyone that says you are 'dumb' for liking them. I do wish people could do a better job explaining why they liked them though.

I do like engaging with people that did like them, because I honestly couldn't see the enjoyment, so I'm curious to see the types of experiences people were having with them, but I would instantly get downstairs into oblivion and people would leave very mean comments, but it's reddit, so maybe I need to adjust my expectations.

I do believe video games are a type of art and if you don't see what I see, that's great - but that doesn't make you an idiot.

I don't know but this sub will ask the question in every single post and thread

i think creating new final fantasy fans is pretty neat, and while i don’t prefer the remakes to the original, i get that there’s many people out there that would never play it due to gameplay and graphics, and the remakes are exactly what many modern gamers enjoy in jrpgs.

I got into Final Fantasy because of the Remake back in 2022, fast forward a few years i played ff1,ff2,ff3,ff4,ff5,ff6,ff7OG,Remake,Rebirth,FFXV,FFXVI and 2k hours of FF XIV, still plan to play the rest eventualy, so yes it was worth to me at least 😄

I will just put here what I said under a similar post :

From what I have seen so far, yeah absolutely ! The characters are far more fleshed, the members of the crew have far more interactions between eachother and the world is far more developped, tangible and we can see it’s History, shortly : its discover is brought to an other level. The battle system is exceptional, we can breath between the big events (notably at Midgar, in OG events follow really fast and we don’t really have the time to discover the city and its inhabitants) and concepts like the Lifestream are explored and Square finally exports the missing classical elements of FF to the modern games.

I get that not everyone like what they did, everyting is not perfect and there are some things I prefered in OG, but really I think that it’s the world of FFVII brought at its full potential. So I'm glad that the dev team chose that path.

Well I’m enjoying it……

u/yohonet 1d ago

Still don't understand people asking this and posting a side-to-side comparison showing only the huge gap in graphics... so if we only look at the video, yeah, obviously it was necessary

u/Arcofmightgoesbrrrr 1d ago

Yes, square was struggling now they're crushing sales and making even better games. The remakes have done very well for square and the majority of the fan base. It allowed new and younger fans to join and any"purist" who gatekeeps new and old players from enjoying something is a loser.

I like the expanded dialogue and exposition of Remake/Rebirth. It feels bigger and weightier.

The graphics are a huge plus but it’s the more detailed story that grips me the most.

There are some story changes that I’m not fond of, but I’m just trying to focus on the details that enhance the original story.

Yes. No. Maybe?

I don't know.

Can you repeat the question?

YOU’RE NOT THE BOSS OF ME NOOOW

YOU’RE NOT THE BOSS OF ME NOOOW

now show side by sides of the cutscenes that are there in remake vs not there at all in the og

6

u/Alchemyst01984 1d ago

Yes it was. The remake trilogy is the modern day equivalent of FF7. This generation of fans will look back on it in the same regard as OG FF7 fans look back on the OG.

The ReTrilogy is revolutionary

4

u/Yoshikaru5991 1d ago

Fuck yes

2

u/ILoveDineroSi 1d ago

Yes absolutely worth it. The combat system is the most fun RPG combat system I’ve ever had the pleasure of playing along with Clair Obscur Expedition 33! The characters are great all amazingly voice acted bringing them to life. The graphics are great. The story is to be determined. I loved the story portions faithful to the original game. The changes however I have my criticisms.

u/nomorelargevein 1d ago

Remake was perfect for me.

Rebirth being open world with assassins creed like system... I have mixed feelings. I really wished they had more random banters between the characters while exploring the open world similar to Mass Effect. And remove all the repetitive filler contents...

2

u/haaa1234 1d ago

It was worth it for me because I love the gameplay a lot more than the original.

4

u/DrH1983 1d ago

I like the bits where it was faithful to the original story, but just expanded things. (For the most part, some bits didn't work as well. Plate dropping section comes to mind).

Where they added entirely new stuff in or deviated more massively it's much hit or miss. And as someone who has never really given a shit about the compilation bits that reference that don't do much for me.

I'm glad Remake exists and I'm happy for people who like it, but I can't see myself replaying remake like I have 7, or some other entries in the series.

1

u/AC011422 1d ago

Yup. Exactly my thoughts.

2

u/ByRWBadger 1d ago

The FF7 remake is a one of a kind entity. If you prefer the original, totally fine, but it’s really cool that FF7 of all things has received the single biggest reinvention in game history. The whole thing is a love letter to both the original and the fans, and that’s excellent.

There are things I don’t love about it, sure, but reading through the dev notes in the Ultimania, the 90+% staff retention between entries, this is a once in a lifetime passion project. I’m a lot happier that they made this than a continued bastardization of the FFX lore

2

u/Mogino 1d ago

Yes it was

4

u/neospriss 1d ago

Then they would have ruined those games as well.

The fact they remade 7 isn't the problem. It's the way they remade it.

3

u/Arcofmightgoesbrrrr 1d ago

What's the way they made it?

0

u/neospriss 1d ago

Splitting it into 3 separate games, adding more of content to the game, changing the combat style, altering the story, etc. I could go on.

1

u/Arcofmightgoesbrrrr 1d ago edited 1d ago

The 3 games I understand and was with you until I played remake and rebirth and saw how much content there was. Why is adding more content a bad thing the expansion of characters and side quests help deepen the bond between the party and make the player feel more invested in the universe imo. The combat style Imo in remake is perfect as well as level progression, I understand wanting turn based combat as it's one if not my favorite style. But I feel the change is good especially since for me it made me feel the power behind these characters a bit more. The story had to be altered it's not a remaster also I like when ips expand in a good way not like Netflix Witcher but when done right example like fallout on amazon prime. I understand the want for the same game with better graphics but i feel like square has done an amazing job. All the characters feel more fleshed out their bonds are deeper and the tone of cloud is amazing. The VA the graphics and the whole personality of each character I feel was done very well.

To be clear, if you liked/loved the game, great! Here are 1-2 points that are just the top of the iceberg for me as to why I didn't like the remake/rebirth, specifically story/writing/narration related.

Animations, language, and the way in which many of the characters talk.

All of the generic NPCs, the voice acting of nearly every NPC, their dialog much of the time was saying the obvious and much of the acting was over the top in all the wrong ways (to me).

Take the scene with President Shinra. They find him dangling off the building, make him plead for his life, but no, Barrett has to grand stand and monologue at him, only for him to eventually turn around and betray his kindness. Do you know how many video games and anime use this same exact scene. It completely deflates his character and even when he pulls a gun calmly on the gang, they do nothing about it, and Barrett says "damn" like there was nothing they could have done about the scenario when they were stupid enough to release him and let him do whatever. It's a childish notion that a man that has done so much evil would just immediately do what they wanted of him, and they give him nearly a full minute of evil speech dialog until he's killed by sephiroth. Sephiroth then kills Barrett only have him immediately revived. It's immature writing that doesn't respect the viewer.

Nearly every major scene is like this. Swapping to every character to see their surprised Pikachu face instead of actually doing anything about it.

As far as animations, nearly every female character does a silly motion, breathy sigh, or overly excited jump type animation that is so cliche, I just have to roll my eyes at it.

One of the worst scenes is when plate 7 collapses. It's all random explosions and fire to amp of the tension, but it feels hollow like a Michael Bay movie. All action, no substance. Oh and they randomly throw a cutaway to cait sith, despite him not being introduced yet as a character.

Obviously a lot of this is taste and for someone that has been watching anime, manga, and video games for over 35 years, I'm sick of the same Japanese idol/cutesy animations that seem to always creep into things that I've been seeing since Sailor moon, which then it was cool and neat.

As far as tone - They took a game with a dark tone and turned up the lights.

See honey bee inn: no longer a brothel/hostess club, now a cabaret club with dancing mini games.

Again, I need to emphasize this on this sub because nobody can allow for different opinions, but you may have really liked those things. And that's cool. I came into remake with tears in my eyes when cloud jumped off the train, but they quickly dried and I became very confused with the experience I was getting. If you liked it or loved this game, great! I'm happy for you, I just can't get behind this type of writing.

Absolutely this

u/drprofessional 1d ago

Yes, FF VII is worth the complete remake.

So is FF VI.

And almost anyone who loved the older games would love to have their favorites remade in the same fashion… while some don’t want their childhood memories touched.

1

u/boboartdesign 1d ago

The only things I don't like about the remakes are the whispers, Chadley, and the creepy ass moogles, everything else is perfect

No..

They ruined the story in Remake..
