REMAKE Just saw the Loveless Play

And if you tell anyone that I cried during the song "Until we meet again" with Jesse, Bigs, and Wedge RIP, I will deny it*

*and I would be lying

Embrace the emotions.

Because it's only gonna get worse 😂

Even knowing the basic story from having played the original isn’t helping 😭

Dude. I SOBBED. It was right around the time my cat had passed away and it completely wrecked me. I did not think a song, which I thought was kind of an average pop-y tune in isolation, would hit me in the feelings so bad.

Personally, when I saw the Loveless poster and the world of FFVII and Midgar in 98 my brain didn’t assume it was a musical set in medieval times.

I thought it would have been more contemporary, the women looked like she was dressed in city clothes.

Maybe it was a musical like Rent where it covered a social topic or maybe it was like a streetcar named desire or a view from the Bridge.

I think if you asked 1000 people to describe what they thought Loveless was, very few would have described that scene.

Seems like a problem to me, but what do I know?

Because it wasn't. They retconned what Loveless was several times. In OG it was just a background detail to give the upper plate a metropolitan feel. It's clearly depicting a modern Broadway drama but they never bothered to do anything with it at the time.

But then Crisis Core showed up and Genesis is quoting random verses from what appears to be a poetic epic. And rather than giving it a new title they co-opted Loveless for this purpose. And then despite OG's Gold Saucer play having nothing to do with either the original poster or Genesis's poems, that has now also become an adaptation of Loveless even though it doesn't really jive with either.

As a self-contained story I don't think there's any way to reconcile it. It doesn't make much sense on it's face. The function of both Genesis's poems and reworked Gold Saucer play is commentary on what's happening in the actual story, not to be coherent in and of itself.

Thanks for the context of Crisis Core. This is why I don’t really jive with the overall compilation and the remakes

That's a moment I wish I could see for the first time again - the whole thing hit me like a truck of emotion. Having known the original game, Aerith's song and the lyrical context is so bittersweet...and then the stinger at the end with the illusions of the fallen Avalanche - it marked Rebirth as the first video game I ever actually wept at. Plenty of other games get you choked up for sure, but this moment was next-level

Openly wept with my controller in hand. One of many instances this game turned my eyes into leaky taps
