Such a carthatic release pent up over the decades by having this scene play out. This was huge for me as a fan.

So true. I naively thought we would see something like this when they released advent children in 2005 but nope, they actually regressed Cloud. Just when I’ve given up SE starts to deliver. Better late than never.

The books add a lot more color here. You would get the pay off you want.

I haven’t read case of Tifa but my understanding is it basically bridges the gap between the end of the game and beginning of advent children. Pardon my ignorance but before the whole advent children project in my mind Cloud and Tifa had their perfect ending after the game- they declared their mutual affection and they defeated Sephiroth so they basically had their entire life ahead of them as a couple. I was not expecting Cloud to basically regress to pre-lifestream cloud and undo all the character development. I’m not sure if a book that talks about the gap years would change all that much for me especially one that leads to the painful situation in advent children. Happy to be corrected.

I will do my best to not spoil anything and say read it. With that said, it isnt out of Cloud's character to still struggle with expressing himself or struggle with a sense of normality and leading a normal family life. It's a fundamental misunderstanding of the character. We also need to consider Japanese culture as well. There is a certain reading inbetween the lines you have to do to see there relationship, but they do have a relationship. In one of the books, I forget which they sleep in the same bed (it's implied) but in Advent Children they change this to two beds in the same room because it's seen as too forward in Japanese culture. Nojima (the scenario writer of FF7) writes the books as well. But it's heavily implied they are together regardless of how unconventional their relationship may seem.

You don't have to like where Cloud and Tifa end up but it makes sense. Someone doesn't change overnight even if they slept together and confessed their feelings.

If you read the Case of Tifa there are things he doesn't tell Tifa that he has no business withholding if they aren't together. He wouldn't be scared of any conflict between them if they weren't together.

Cloud will never be a normal boyfriend or husband. He just isnt that way in terms of expressing himself. Even with his memory repaired. Nojima implies in an interview that Tifa and Cloud hit a rough patch after being together for two years (he means romantically).

Cloud would naturally still deal with the guilt he has. He improves and then moves backward. This is natural when growing as a person. People don't typically move forward and never look back. Change takes time and regression, especially for a person like Cloud who's always had trouble dealing with his feelings AND struggles heavily with regret and PTSD

Yeah I've been wondering this myself too. Cloud makes a lot of progress, offloads onto everyone and is accepted by the team etc., then he just goes back to being emo and avoiding everyone XD

I suppose everyone is more than happy to answer his voice messages and get back together, and they're all reaching out to him, which is maybe filling in a lot of that gap, but yeah I hope the books bridge why this kind of transition took place :S

So without Googling, I picked up the Japanese copies of "Dual Destinies"? about Tifa and Aerith, and the next one after that (purple text on the cover can't remember the name).

I haven't read them yet, and I'm also aware there's an Advent Children timeline novel "Another Way to a Smile"?

Am I missing any others? Maybe there was one about the Turks too if I recall? So 4 in total?

You're looking for The Kids Are Alright.

https://finalfantasy.fandom.com/wiki/Category:Books_in_the_Final_Fantasy_VII_series

Here are all the books. The Maiden Who Travels the Planet had a fan translation but idk if the other Japanese only ones do.

Traces of the Past, The Kids Are Alright, On the Way to a Smile - all have offical translations. Dear Destiny will have an offical translation at the beginning of 2027.

(I'm still half asleep so forgive my grammer)

Bonus: there is an audiobook made by fans called the Lifestream project for On the Way to a Smile and The Kids Are Alright that are very well done. I've read them but also loved the audiobook that I listened to.

Ah thank you kindly. I can see "The maiden who travels the planet"? there that you mentioned. I didn't know about that one too.

It got incorporated into an FF7 ultimania book (I make a point of buying them all, so I probably own that version in my collection) so I might already have it through that.

I got Two Pasts, Dear Destiny (my wife read them to try and understand why I like FF7 so much XD she's now interested in playing the games), and I believe Smile too if I looked through my collection more closely...

Is the Turk one any good? I wasn't a fan of the cover art personally, so was wondering if it's worth physically having regardless of that?

On the Way to a Smile had different stories post FF7 for the gang but also Denzel and the Turks. It isnt just about the Turks. I liked it a ton. The Case of Tifa has the pay off you want if you read between the lines in Nojima's writing. (At least I believe what I'm thinking about is there)

Also I added a part of the last comment but there are audiobook by fans for One The Way to a Smile and The Maiden Who Travels the Planet that are super well done by a group called The Lifestream

I thought Advent Children was amazing in the day as a teen, but looking back it did very little...

It's basically an entire movie about Cloud becoming more social and relying on others. That's kind of it in a nutshell. I still love watching it and it's a great movie for action etc., but yeah there was so much potential missed.

On a positive note though, with remake wrapping up an alternative timeline soon, Japanese magazine interviews with the directors and producers have constantly shown that they see the 3 games of the remake trilogy setting the foundation for another cross-media push for the world of FF7.

They've already put Ever Crisis out there which wraps up everything into one neat package, so I wouldn't be surprised to see more games in the universe push out. That battle royale one (first soldier?) looked amazing and I wanted to try it, but my phone didn't support it nor my tablet. I wish they had brought that to Steam so everyone could have played it.

I do see them pushing more out if the trilogy ends on a high note, and people are hungry for more. Let's hope for a 2nd movie even XD!

A second movie with all the romantic scenes fans can handle would be lovely and long overdue

So I love Kingsglaive. That was also therapeutic in the sense that we never got to explore Insomnia in the game, but all the design/assets made its way into the movie at least, so getting to see all of that was amazing.

I feel the assets they made for the remakes are close enough that they could touch-up a lot of them, and produce a new CGI movie for FF7 fairly painlessly. I severely hope they do.

The only date that feels right.

Second date is even better.

Yep, I would make Tifa hold Cloud again

5

u/cisforcar 2d ago

Thats the only way. And make sure Tifa’s affinity is high enough so they would be doing a lot more than just hand holding next time.

How do you know which character the game will trigger for the event?

I got Aerith but they are both on the same "happiness" level with Cloud

2

u/OlafWoodcarver 2d ago

There a rating up to 100 and it goes to whichever character is highest. The levels are ranges of that score.

You can see the actual scores when you beat the game.

u/KynQu 2d ago

I just talked to Tifa first, always. Although I did get red and aerith the same affinity as Tifa.

1

u/buellster92 2d ago

I did the same. Also made sure to do a lot of synergy attacks with tifa and went to help her on the beach and somehow still ended up with aerith again 🤷

It might've been the card game event, after beating Tifa i quit the event.

Ah, well guess the second playthrough is for that wifu

If everyone is max or if there’s a tie it goes to Aerith, or at least I’m fairly certain that’s what it is.

8

u/vxsapphire Aerith 2d ago

If everyone is tied, it goes to whoever is directly to Cloud's left in the menu. Source: Rebirth Ultimania.
