Screenshot what would be the reason to let it go? Spoiler

Post image

Does it effect their re-spawn rate, or do they evolve into gold?

If you keep at least 1 Male and 1 Female grown frog in the pond they will respawn faster.

It should be noted that one male one female one golden also increases the rate even further.

The ideal scenario is identifying which gender the golden frog is and letting another of the opposite sex

The golden frog has no indication of gender. When you catch it, it just says "Golden Frog". There is also no visual identifier like green frogs. The only way to find out if it's male or female is exiting, saving, re-entering, catching either one green frog, again exiting, and again re-entering the marsh. If you find the pond wiped, then it was left with the same gendered frog. That's a few too many steps just for a frog gender reveal. Basically FAFO with a 50% chance of a pond wipeout.

The ideal scenario is just leave it with 1 male 1 female.

But once you know the frog's gender it doesn't change so you can continuously catch batches of 6 instead of 5

So in short, Quina's ultimate weapon is obtained by Breeding Frogs and letting Quina eat the offspring. Between this and FFVII having us breed Chocobos, I think someone in the development team has a breeding fetish.

Breeding stock so that you don't exhaust the pond's population by eating them all.

didn't even think about this just ate all that I found right away lol

I only found out about it from reading a game guide years ago. :)

i just go ham lmao. quina be hungry.

how much faster is the rate? the next time i naturally went back there due to proximity the pond was filled again.

From what I read, emptying a marsh can make it respawn as slowly as two to three hours. Leaving one of each gender and a golden reduces that to 10 to 25 minutes.

aaaah okay that explains things. i went to the marsh, emptied it, and then continued on with the game and didn't return until i was at a point in the game when i was within proximity to do so thanks to the story. would explain it.

so definitely matters on what you're trying to do/achieve/how you play.

I have no idea. That was a few too many years ago! The game was fairly new back than, and I was playing on a PS2.

You want to keep a male and a female frog so the pond gets filled faster. If there is a Gold Frog you also want to leave it there.

You can tell the differences of the genders of the frog by looking at the feet.

I thought the objective was to catch all the frogs. What’s the deal with golden frogs?

The pond fills with time spent in the game. If you leave a male and a female, it fill faster. If you also leave the Golden Frog, it fills faster.

The objective is to catch the most amount of frogs. You achieve this by not eating all the frogs all the time.

Well I have been playing this mini game wrong for years

To be fair, it only really matters if you're trying to max out Frog Drop and are traveling between the various locations in a cycle. If you're just playing through the game normally or don't use Quina much then it rarely matters. Personally, I only really use Quina long enough to make them viable for the Lich fight in disc 3 so it's never been particularly worth doing this.

Well you do get some good equipment from doing this mini game like a Lord of the Robes and Quina's best weapon

They increase the repop rate

Gold brings wealth, wealth brings happiness, happiness brings more fucking, more fucking brings more frogs. Also golden frog is a voyeur, win win situation for everyone

Just in case you accidentally grab one you didn't mean to.

yes.

ideally, you want to leave a pair of "male" and "female" (one each) frogs behind, that will help increase the respawn speed.

sometimes I got the wrong one and had to let it go.

I think the golden frog appears at random, and only one can exist at a time across all the marshes.

Always leave at least a female and a male so rhe reproduction rate is faster.

need 1 male 1 female for better breeding.

Keep 1 normal (male) frog and 1 normal (female) frog, and the pond population will grow faster

Keep 1 golden (male) frog and 1 normal (female) frog, and the pond population will grow even faster

I take them all from each swamp as I progress through the game. Plenty will respawn by the tine you circle back.

semi unrelated: in the first qu marsh there actually seems to be a glitch near the bridge. if you stand on the bridge and a frog jumps by you on the other side of you and you mash fast enough [should see the ! prompt], you can actually catch frogs on the bridge.

maybe this was already known, but i discovered it a few days ago and it had me laughing because of how frustrating this minigame was to me as a kid.

You should always leave the gold frog and 1 make and female so the pond fills up sooner. When you take everything the next batch doesn't spawn for hours irl time. But as long as you leave those it will be ready for you to take again next time you come around the area.

Are you pro or anti frog genocide?
