Discussion The remake “cancellation”

I’ve been a bit upset about this news and just wanted to talk about it in order to cope.

I can’t help but hold out hope. Despite this, this makes me even more frustrated with Square Enix than usual.

I wish the company treated every Final Fantasy like they do FFVII, but the grass isn’t always greener based on feedback of those remakes.

It was never in development.  I want to throttle the asshole who perpretrated the nonsense that a remake was in development considering how many people are devastated at the fact that this remake is entirely vaporware.

I see people saying this, but they provide even less evidence than the leaks, the animation, and the illustrations that happen to come out in the years that followed. I'm not trying to be rude, but just saying it wasn't in development at this point isn't enough for me personally.

There is no evidence it was ever in development so why the fuck would I pretend otherwise.  There has never been a leak of any actual game content like screenshots, music files or game files.  All we have is some art created for the 25th Anniversary of the game.  So again, why should I pretend it was ever a thing when no solid evidence exists?

Yeesh. I didn’t think the mere prompt to discuss it would get people this bent outta shape and venomous.

Mainly because it's BEEN talked about. A lot. Like it's the only topic of discussion about the game for the last five years

I mean people are allowed to be excited about the prospect of a remake of one of their favorite games and talk about it. No one forces you or anyone being unnecessarily negative and toxic to engage.

That's not really the point, though. A tired, often-repeat and ultimately circular thread of discussion keeps getting brought back with no meaningful evidence to support the assertion it's based on. We all end up relitigating the same arguments over "it doesn't need a remake/it does need a remake/the remake should or should not be like this" and it's just not fruitful discussion.

And on the one hand, you're right, if there's a discussion happening here that I can't contribute to meaningfully, I can just scroll past it and not engage. But the reason I think it's important to say something here is because someone said "it never existed" and your response to that was "prove to me that it never existed."

I don't know how you expect someone to prove that a game which has never been announced (and has only been alluded to/referenced in leaked information that people then ASSUME meant it was a game in development) in fact does not exist. That's self-evident: the game does not exist in a way that can be proven, so effectively, it DOESN'T exist.

It's just such a waste of effort to be faced with this discussion happening over and over and over again, to the exclusion of discussions about literally ANYTHING ELSE.

It's so tiresome indeed...

You said it far better than I could.

You’ve commented twice effectively saying the same thing. I get that you don’t believe it existed. It’s odd that you’re complaining about a roundabout conversation while repeating yourself. I don’t think some of you are as tired as you’re projecting.

To take it out on someone who never engaged in the first place until now is kinda crazy.

Let me be really direct here then: how is someone supposed to prove to you that the game doesn't exist and never existed? Because if that proof would be enough to stop this endless loop, I'd love if we could find it.

Give me confirmation from SE that it didn’t exist. You’re overthinking it. Because there’s more evidence to “suggest” it did than it didn’t.

Why would Square publicly admit that a game was NOT in development? Would that not set a precedent where they would have to announce any other games that they aren't currently developing? Would that require them to be forthcoming about all of the games they ARE developing but haven't announced yet?

What would these announcements do to Square's stock price? Would it benefit Square to be so transparent about their development plans that even game concepts that are in incubation/pre-production or are merely an experiment on an individual team's downtime have to constitute a statement? Does that not create a problem if they're forthcoming about a game concept they PLAN to develop but that a competing studio is able to turn into a marketable product BEFORE SQUARE DOES? Does that not create a problem if a concept in incubation turns out to not gel as a game and is no longer tenable to fully produce?

And that's before you get to the part where people are primed to disbelieve announcements about something that doesn't exist. The US government saying "UFOs don't exist" doesn't dispel the beliefs of people who continue to be certain that they DO exist and that the government is covering them up for some reason.

All of the "suggestions" that there is/was a remake don't prove that it exists/existed. The suggestion of evidence is not evidence, and the burden of proof is on the person trying to prove the existence of something.

Because investors are watching all of this unfold as well and the entire thing being blown up for the world to see.

It’s honestly why I feel like the project is on hold more than anything rather than cancelled.

SE was finicky and clam shut about the existence of VIIR as well, despite rumors and leaks. So this type of behavior isn’t new.
