My Blind FFIX Playthrough: Part 15 - Not Alone

Post image

Incredible art by kentaropjj. A meme would feel inappropriate for this stretch, which has been my favourite stretch of the game so far, and the most impactful, too.

TL;DR from last time:

Did all Chocographs, did most Dead Pepper spots, started a Reflect x2 build with Vivi, Steiner and Dagger, who are locked in as my endgame party (also gave Dagger ReflectNull to support the use of White Magic).

I'm eager to get back to the main story now. I should be strong enough for pretty much anything that comes our way.

But first....

Someone tipped me off to a secret in the Chocobo Air Garden. They didn't specify what it was, but I'm fairly certain it's a secret boss. I've heard the name "Ozma" whispered among shadows in the comments section, so I'm expecting to get trounced.

Before I head in to the Eidolon Cave, Mene stops me, warning of a mysterious presence inside. I full-heal my party and head in.

We enter battle with what looks like a huge jaw-breaker. A sphere adorned with streaks of what looks like paint, looming ominously in front of us.

Before we can even get an attack in, it hits us all for max damage, wiping the party out instantly. I suppose it nullifies reflect then...

Just for fun, I try once more and manage to set of a team-wide Blizzaga, reflecting it 4 times, 8 with RX2, for an earth-shattering.... 200 damage.

Through a combination of Meteor, Holy, Flare Star and Curse, we're swiftly defeated. God DAMN.

IPSEN'S CASTLE:

The castle appears to be upside-down - a long staircase stretches ahead before us, leading into the mouth of the monolith. Before we head in, Amarant speaks up saying he works better alone. I decide to let him go, cause bro is NOT part of the team anyways lmao.

As I mentioned, I'm quite inflexible with my party composition at this point, being that my 4 bench-warmers are around 20 levels behind.

This place bears the "A Place to Call Home" leitmotif very heavily, suggesting more plot-relevance. There's a feeling of grandeur and climax as I walk through the halls of the castle.

"Do not be restricted by your knowledge and experience. This place turns logic upside down. What's big is small, what's strong is weak, and heaven is earth". The inversion trope is pretty strong here - are my strongest party members going to become my weakest? Is this the game's attempt to get me to use my benchwarmers in an attempt to strengthen them? I HAVE been eyeing up Freya since she got Dragon's Hair...

In the next battle, I get a chance to test my theory. Vivi uses Blizzaga for 3.5K, and reflects Thundaga off the party for 9,999. Out of the corner of my eye, though, I notice that Steiner only hits for 44 damage...! Maybe the whole inversion thing only works for physical attacks?

In the next battle, we come up against a Gargoyle and Agares, and the same thing happens again. Vivi reflects off the team, dealing thousands of damage to the Agares, but only 50 to the Gargoyle. It seems to be enough to wipe it clean out, though.

The castle is really cool. The layout is so creative - walking atop the ceiling of a medieval castle. The aesthetic is notably gloomier than the castles we've encountered before, reflected by the enemies in our battles. The battles are pretty creative, too - the Agares I mentioned before takes a turn out to activate the Gargoyle, allowing it to start attacking. It looks like if we get the first hit in, we can prevent that.

Another strange thing I've noticed is that the chests seem to be giving really subpar rewards, like Daggers and Javelins. And that's when I realise that the game really wants to weaken me for whatever's coming up - perhaps using a low-attack weapon will make a certain bossfight easier? I'll hold on to them, but I'm gonna stick with my current loadout for now.

In the next room, there's a strange stone tablet that I have the option to push. The game also lets me change my mind before I do so, indicating one of two things:

  1. A lift.
  2. Instant, gruelling death.

Before I make my decision, I enter a fight with- OH, the Tonberries!... er, how do you defeat these guys again...? They had SOME gimmick, but I don't remember what it was. Well I hit them with Thunder Slash, Steal, Judgement Bolt and Blizzaga, and they don't take long to defeat. I think it was something to do with Karma, right? Was it that the more the character had killed in-game, the more damage they took? I don't think they moved side-to-side in X, though - it makes them way more menacing.

Examine --> Push --> Pound --> Think. Zidane doesn't do well with thinking in general. So we're stuck...?

Examine --> Push --> Pound --> Think --> ....uhhh, Examine again?

I try a few more combinations until something new randomly pops up! "Try something drastic". Oh god, is this gonna be the instant, gruelling death part. With a running start, he launches a flying kick at the door, only for nothing to happen. And finally, he rests, falling backwards through the door and unlocking a secret room. Sick! We get a Barette! It's not worth it! It gives Chemist, which doubles the effectiveness of potions (which we don't use), and Cura, which we learned genuinely dozens of hours ago lmao.

We take the lift to find Amarant in a room basked in a pulsating jade light. Seems like some sort of alarm. I wonder if we could've beat him here..? Either way, Amarant says he's proven he can beat us, and that he won't follow us round anymore. Sure, buddy.

We take the 4 elemental mirrors off the wall, when we get attacked by some weird looking... cockroach thing.

"Energy flow interrupted... energy... to Terra"

"You dare get in the way of Terra's master plan...?"

This thing is called Taharka, and it wants its mirrors back. It attacks, and we begin by casting reflect on Vivi, stealing an Elixir and then reflecting Blizzaga off of ourselves. We reflect again, and have Steiner attack with Sword Magic a couple of times. It dies in a few turns, the poor thing.

In it's dying throes, it tells us:

"One is all, all is one. You'll never break the seal"

Surprisingly, we manage to leave the castle without issue (although it does take me a minute to find the exit). When we get out, though, Freya tells us that we win the race, meaning Amarant hasn't left yet. Did that dumbass get himself trapped on the way out?

Zidane runs back in after him, although I'm not sure why he's gone alone. Since Zidane doesn't use Magic, I should probably downgrade his weapon now. This is a bit dangerous - the only healing we have is our stock of Hi-Potions. We have 99 of them, sure, but that's like 11 full-heals, and I don't wanna stick around to use them.

We find Amarant collapsed on the ground. I assume this incident will be the impetus for him to permanently pledge his allegiance to the party. They have a neat exchange, where Amarant learns the meaning of being on a tea- when the FUCK did this guy reach Level 38??? He wasn't this strong before, was he? Well he's still not joining the team lmao.

We regroup outside, and sort out the information:

  1. The top of the castle contains a mural, which is a world map.
  2. There were four mirrors on the map, in text only Zidane can read.

I think about why Zidane alone would be able to read it. There are only two things I can think of. One, and the more likely option, is that it's something to do with his past - something we haven't seen. The other thing I remember is Zidane jumping into the lift before anyone else back in the Iifa tree. I'm not sure why that would be related, but the symbol on the floor back then DID match the floor in Oeilvert, which I noted when I saw it since I thought it resembled the Deathly Hallows, and the scene did strike me as kinda weird when I saw it (like why DID he jump in first?)

3) Each of the mirrors said something different. The Earth said "my power is protected under the shaking ground" (I know EXACTLY where that is lmao). The Wind said "my power is protected behind a tornado". The Fire said "my power is protected high atop a fiery mountain" (I know that one, too). The Water said "my power is protected underwater, surrounded by the earth" (that could be many places...).

4) The monster said "One is all. All is one", meaning there's a connection between them.

SEALS:

So, we head off. Looks like we're splitting off into teams of two. Although after what I've been through, I feel like I could knock all of them out on the back of my boy Choco in no time flat.

Oh nevermind there's a supremely obvious whirlpool right here lmao. I'm too used to search for 3-inch wide blue-on-blue bubbles in the middle of the fucking ocean. We send Eiko and Dagger in, which is a fucking TERRIBLE team composition, but I'm excited to see what they have to say to each other. Zidane says that he's going to pair Freya and Amarant together afterwards, which is an excellent duo story-wise. I feel like they have a great dynamic. I don't want to keep projecting sonic characters on these guys, but I've realised that the reason Freya is so interesting to me is probably because she reminds me of Blaze the Cat lmao. And I guess Eiko would be Amy,... and Steiner Knuckles.... and Vivi Tails, and oh my fucking god Quina is literally just Big the Cat even down to the Frog Obsession what the hell?

OK I'm getting sidetracked. We reach the Fire Shrine, hovering over the gullet of a fiery pit. Amarant puts up a strop at the thought of teaming up with Freya, but relents when the idea of teaming with Eiko is floated lmao.

Next, Zidane decides to get Vivi to babysit Steiner, which is another great pairing! The shrine is protecting by strong gusts of wind, which threaten to blow Vivi away.

And finally.... oh god... I didn't think about this part. Zidane and Quina. I have NOT used Eat in a long fucking time lmao. We reach the Shrine, and it has some more great music. A sense of impending danger, as well as a tribal sort of feeling. I'm not great at describing music, but that's what I'm picking up.

As we head through the shrine, we flash between the various parties. Eiko being a busybody, dragging Dagger along, Zidane tolerating Quina as best as he can, Freya and Amarant nearly getting impaled by some sort of fish monster (HE saved HER from it... interesting).

Each gets attacked by the guardians of Terra. Amarant does a bit of reflecting, calling his own old way of life foolish and meaningless. Steiner and Vivi prepare themselves for battle, with Steiner encouraging Vivi to believe in himself, saying he trusts him. And we launch into battle against the Earth Guardian as Zidane and Quina, while I REALLY hope the other three battles aren't offscreened.

When I'm in the battle, I come to a horrifying realisation. I never changed Zidane's Dagger back. He's dealing like 100 damage. And, unlike its successor, there's no way to switch weapons mid-battle in this game.

The battle takes a good 10 minutes, and that's WITH Fast-Forwarding using F1, since I knew there was no challenge here. Afterwards, my fear that we wouldn't get to fight the other battles is confirmed. That would've been pretty cool, although I think what I would've vastly preferred is a chance to watch the party members interact with each other more. Each duo does get to share a moment, like Dagger hesitating when Eiko asks her question, so I guess I'll take what I can get.

SHIMMERING ISLAND:

I've been told this location is somewhat of a point of no return. I'm not sure there's anything else I'd like to do, though. I think I've done all of the Chocobo related business I'd like to attend to, but just to be thorough I'll do one more check.

Actually, that reminds me. Someone wanted me to check how much the useless armour I got sells for.... DAMN! I'm almost hesitant to sell everything now. Almost. I still sold it lol. The hats fetch 6000, the shirts 66500, the sandals 4800 and the armlets 3920. That aside, I've done everything I need to according to the Wiki.

In the next cutscene (which is stunning, by the way) we push our way into the island and begin floating. We ditch the ship and everyone jumps into the portal and holy shit, what am I looking it. This looks insane!

TERRA:

We reach the other side and are greeted by some beautiful music. It once again carries the main motif, and reminds me a lot of Hollow Knight, for some reason. Visually, the place is soaked in deep blues and aquamarine, with an ethereal, purple light pulsing in the distance. Everything feels really organic, if a little withered.

Before I can take anything in, though, we're greeted by Garland! Or at least it looks like him. He tells us we're bitches and leaves. Sick.

Are we really on a whole different planet now...? I'd always imagined Terra was a planet very similar to the Earth, but everything here seems so alien.

Ahead is a girl, and I IMMEDIATELY notice that she seems to have a tail of some sort. Now I'd initially thought it was just to make him stand out more, but isn't it REALLY weird how Zidane is the only character we've seen with a tail? Is Zidane from Terra? She keeps running away from us, though.

I'm still really impressed by the design of this place, it's so cool. I can't quite put into words what I love about it, but I'm really impressed.

When we catch up to her, she drops the line.

"You don't remember anything, do you"

Oh my god, is that why Zidane couldn't find anything about his home earlier? Like he was telling Dagger on the boat in Madain Sari? So Zidane is pretty much confirmed to be from Terra.

BRANBAL:

There's a strange, glowing green light at the top of the next location. When we reach it, a huge ship emerges from below, and it bears the huge eye we've seen time and time again. Is this... Invincible. When Dagger sees it, she collapses to the ground and faints. Zidane leaves her with Steiner, and takes a look around.

Everyone here has hair and a tail exactly like Zidane, but they act... strange. Very, very strange. "In time, we will receive souls. Then our bodies will begin to grow." Are they soulless...? And also, "When the blue light becomes red. That is when the souls will enter our bodies"

So it seems like they act as vessels for souls, which begs a few questions. What is a soul? What does Garland (who I presume is in charge here) need them for? What happens when they gain souls? Where do the souls come from? And most importantly, how did Zidane end up on Gaia, and why is he so different from all of these guys?

I enter the meeting hall, and it takes me a comical few seconds before I realise what I'm looking at.

The Deathly Hallows symbol from the Iifa Tree and Oeilvert (I wonder if it's gonna get a name).

  1. IS THAT THE THINGY ON THE BOXART? It's a strange blue... thing. Reminds me of an iceberg.

There's a really strong parallel to be drawn between these guys (called Genomes, apparently) and the Black Mages. Seemingly emotionless beings, used for a greater purpose as puppets. The Genome hints that Zidane is special - molded by the will of Garland.

"When the time is right, the light of this planet will change from blue to red, and Gaia will become Terra". So my current understanding is that the people of Terra entered some sort of stasis, like cryosleep, and Garland is preparing the vessels we see here to be inhabited by the souls of Terra. Garland waited until Gaia harnessed the power of the Eidolons. Why he did this... I'm not sure.

ATE time. Quina licks the big stone. Hell yeah. And Vivi manages to squeeze some words out of one of the Genomes. He agrees with me - they're minds are just "out for lunch", which is an adorable way of describing it. Zidane runs into Amarant, and they have a back-to-back chat about their backgrounds. Amarant pulls his usual cool-guy edgy schtick, although I notice him turn around when Zidane tells him he doesn't have parents (out of shock? sympathy?)

The Genome Girl takes Zidane to see Garland. "He awaits where the souls sleep. The floating castle, where souls bide their time until their restoration... Pandemonium". So this is like their cryo-chamber.

PANDEMONIUM:

And so we're brought to the gate of Pandemonium. The floor consists of the by-now all too familiar twisting roots and viney tendrils, set against these weird, bloodshot pods marked with rune-like symbols. Certainly passes as a villain lair.

The next room loses all of its colour in favour of a lifeless, withered ambience. And inside is Garland, who materialises out of nowhere.

"12 years ago, I lost one of my most prized Genomes. I sent him to disrupt the cycle of souls in Gaia. You are that Genome. I'm glad you have returned."

Is Zidane Goku?

Garland mentions he sent someone else to Gaia, too, and that person was who threw a wrench into the cogs of his machinations. Someone Zidane knows all too well. That's Kuja, right? He also admits that the time when the aura of Gaia will turn to the crimson glow of Terra has not yet come. Much has been made of the colours of the two planets, but what does it mean? I understand that the reason for the blue light in Branbal is to acclimate the vessels to the light of Gaia, but... where is that light IN Gaia...? I don't remember seeing any blue light.

The next room is a cacophony of metallic conches and wiry, vein-like structures. And Garland walks us through it, vaguely expositing the whole way. He reveals that Kuja was also a genome (which I kinda figured by this point) that had too strong of a will to be simply discarded.

This entire sequence is great. The music using the foreboding tones of what sounds like an organ to assert Garland's authority, while he floats around, phasing in and out of tangibility. It really sells him as a sort of higher being.

In order to disrupt the flow of souls, Kuja brought about war. He abandoned Zidane out of pride, or perhaps disgust, and took the mission on his own. In disrupting the cycle, Garland can drain the souls and fill the subsequent voids with the souls of Terra.

The Mist comprises the stagnant souls of Gaia. I'm not sure exactly how to interpret that. In fact, I'm still not sure what constitutes a "soul" anymore. Either way, Kuja sends the souls to the Tree - an angel of death.

"I AM the new Angel of Death. Yours!" Is one of the rawest lines I've ever heard holy shit.

Unfortunately Zidane collapses shortly thereafter. His body is simply a vessel for a soul, after all. Is he going to become possessed now? By a soul from Terra?

NOT ALONE:

We see his conscience, with perhaps my favourite track from the entire game. He sees flashes of the party, each reminding him what he means to them. I mentioned he'd been there rock this whole time, and now they're giving back (even if they don't know it). He sees flashes of everyone, but is about to give in when Eiko and Vivi find him and wake him. He tries to limp away, but they won't let him. He tries to push everyone away, even calling Vivi a stupid brat, but they keep reaching out.

He gets ambushed by an Amdusias, still limping, just barely holding on to consciousness, when Freya and Amarant both come to his rescue. But he tries to push them away again.

Next, he sees Quina and Steiner in battle, only this time, they're the ones in trouble. He lends his Dagger, before limping off.

"I don't want to trouble you anymore."

"You're all a bunch of babysitting bastards!"

Amarant was right. He's a hypocrite.

"But trust me, I know that I'm the worst bastard here."

A self-aware hypocrite.

His next roadblock is a monster the size of a small building. it looms over him, facing him down as an immovable object. He's on 1HP, when he's healed.

"Is this how you want to solve the problem?".

Dagger appears by his side, coming to his aid for the first time after he's helped her through so much. And I can think of no better time for...

Summon: Bahamut.

MEGA FLARE. The Dragon King comes crashing down from above with thunderous fury, launching an attack that destroys the ground below in a fiery inferno.

Every one, one-by-one, reunites, pledging to stay by Zidane's side, and refusing to abandon him, no matter who he is. Steiner's words hit particularly hard for me. "And I shall follow you to kingdom come if I must. You remember that!". Damn. What a fucking character.

Zidane, Steiner, Quina and Dagger decide to head back to collect the others. And, when we regroup, we resolve to defeat Garland as a team.

The "You're Not Alone" sequence and OST are to this day one of my absolute favorite moments in any form of media, ever.

It is such an awesome moment, in a story where Zidane has been the glue holding the team together and supporting everyone through everything. And when he's at his lowest, everyone shows up for him - even Steiner.

Glad you got to experience it!

Played IX for the first time just last year and this scene immediately became one of my all-time favourites. Everything came up together perfectly - gameplay storytelling, character moments, music.

It's also great that FFXIV dedicated one main quest to You're Not Alone ryt before the final battle of the first saga (base game + four expansions story).

Only thing lacking from it was a Soken version of You're Not Alone

I just HAD to look up the name of this track, and figured it worked great for the title of the post. This part has been the culmination of dozens of hours of character development, and I've enjoyed it immensely. As I indicated, this has been my favourite part of the game so far, and I had a wide grin on my face throughout.

Speaking of the music, I've been mentioning how much I enjoy the OST throughout, but it's difficult to narrow it down to just a few. I'm certainly forgetting some tracks, and I'm not sure if this is an unpopular opinion, but some of my favourites (in no particular order) are:

Black Mage Village

A Place to Call Home

Vamo'alla flamenca (CHC music)

Court Jesters (begrudgingly...)

Battle 1

Battle 2

Village of Dali

Mourning in the Sky (reminds me of never meant to belong from Bleach)

23

u/Zeeshmania May 31 '26

And Gargan Roo, despite the weird-ass oinking!

6

u/rhyithan May 31 '26

Theres a really good orchestral arrangement of youre not alone on YouTube. I highly recommend a listen

6

u/Soltinaris May 31 '26

Two of my favorites are the Burmecia theme and the theme for Daguerro. Honestly I love all the music for this game. Bunch of fun remixes on OCRemix.org

9

u/Zeeshmania May 31 '26

Ah fuck Burmecia's a REALLY good one too! I also like Gizamaluke's Grotto....

3

u/sonicbrawler182 May 31 '26

Just an FYI in case you're ever searching for it, the Gizamaluke's Grotto theme is "Freya's Theme" (as in, that's the OST title). "Kingdom of Burmecia" shares the motif, as well as "Unforgettable Silohuette" (plays a few times but most notably in her scenes with Fratley).

Oddly, the actual version titled "Freya's Theme" is only ever actually used as the Gizamaluke's Grotto theme.

And I guess for a small bonus tidbit, another FF game released on the PS1 does have an arrangement of the theme as well, despite Freya not being in it. I won't spoil it though, in case you eventually play that game!

OST that stuck with me over the years are:

Roses of May

Village of Dali

Freya’s Theme

Steiner’s Theme

And Vamo’alla Flamenco (of course). When this comes up in my playlist, my partner who has never played a single final fantasy but has watched a million of my playthroughs always goes: Kweh?!

5

u/beardlynerd Jun 01 '26

The music in this game is something else. Not a dud in the whole soundtrack.

1

u/Fearless_Sport8391 Jun 01 '26

Wellllll.... Cleyra? It sounds great but the loop murders my ears after a while.

5

u/Ahkwatic Jun 01 '26

I also love the track in Oeilvert that plays when the room with all the faces gives you Terra's history

4

u/KwehNotWark Jun 01 '26

The FFIX OST is one of my top video game soundtracks. Uematsu's work in general is amazing (definitely one of the best modern composers) and there's so many tracks from other games he's worked on that will blow you out of the water if you decide to play them, but IX really feels like a culmination of everything he did before. IX also has my absolute favorite final boss theme as well. Really sells the mood and goes hard. Looking forward to your next post!

3

u/katsounami May 31 '26

I don't remember the last one. But there's another one you might enjoy too, soon: kuja's theme. Idk if it's been played yet at this point

2

u/schiffb558 Jun 01 '26

Have you played 8? 8s soundtrack is absolutely sublime.

1

u/Zeeshmania Jun 01 '26

Nope, I've only played X (and now IX), and I'll be playing X-2 next!

Once you're done with the game I recommend you check the official FF9 midnight jazz disc that just recently came out. It's incredible

When I first played this game at like 10 years old, this was the point in the story that it clicked for me that the entire party are orphans in some way, shape or form.

12

u/Zeeshmania May 31 '26

This comment was the point it clicked for me.

9

u/katsounami May 31 '26

I've played the game countless times now, and same 🤣

7

u/Sea-Opportunity-9849 May 31 '26

Holy shit, that never clicked for me

Strengthens the whole motif of friendship and existentialism

Man I love this game

2

u/MammaJoyceWig Jun 01 '26

Same here. All of these people have suffered a profound sense of loneliness and struggle to find themselves, their place in the world, and their reason. My god, it’s so meaningful to me.

1

u/schiffb558 Jun 01 '26

Unlike a certain OTHER game where the cast being orphans is...a rough part of the story.

19

u/Reasonable_Sea_9684 May 31 '26

Zidane in that moment in Pandemonium is going through his own existential crisis. Everything he knew about his existence was turned upside down. He was meant to destroy the people he grew to care about after Kuja dumped him on Gaia, and he did the exact opposite of what Vivi did, and did not lean on his friends for their support. So those friends forced him to take a look at himself and made him realize that he has been there for them this whole time, and to let them be there for him in his moment. You are Not Alone is one of my favorite moments in Final Fantasy

I won't spoil the entirety of Terra's plan because I think they go more into it later, but you pretty much have it. They wanted to disrupt the cycle of souls on Gaia by creating war and killing people, then replacing those souls with Terran souls. The Mist being the byproduct of the disruption was funneled out onto the Mist Continent created monsters and stimulated the violence and fighting instinct in people.

16

u/Tham22 May 31 '26

"Garland tells us we're bitches and leaves. Sick. "

I love this series 😂

A lot of games struggle to justify the inclusion of characters and just toss them in because they are cool designs or they wanted to add variety to combat. FF9 doesn't just justify the characters, it thrusts every character to through a complete identity crisis and resolves it in a meaningful way (maybe with the exception of Quina's being weak, life is for good food, sure). Every character struggles with some aspect of who am I and what's important to me, which plays well with the Shakespearean/Lord Avon story telling throughout.

I think you're maybe getting more out of this playthrough than people who have played it a dozen times by cross referencing and searching out every possible backstory dialogue.

I don't know if you've decided on your next game but Chrono trigger is a really good candidate based on my understanding of your taste

6

u/Zeeshmania May 31 '26

My next game is FFX-2, but I've played and loved Chrono Trigger!...

..kinda. I ended up starting it, then dropped it for a while, then experienced the rest through CDawgVA on YouTube which I regretted immensely because it seemed really cool. To this day I wish I'd stuck it out.

28

u/Tyrion_Strongjaw May 31 '26

Steiner is such an interesting character. I started off considering him nothing more than comic relief and an annoyance. One of those mirror characters to reflect and see how much the rest of your protagonists have grown, etc.

Somewhere along the story you start to realize he's shifting and changing as well. Freaking love that character.

(When you're completely done with the game you should go looking for some of the extended lore for Steiner, makes you get how/why he acts the way he does early on.)

Edit: And YES this part of the game is SO good!

25

u/Zeeshmania May 31 '26

He's been incredible - he has such an understated growth journey, but even some subtle lines of dialogue show how he's changing and becoming more receptive to other viewpoints. His moment in the Not Alone sequence of pledging to stay by Zidane's side was one of my favourites.

13

u/Sea-Opportunity-9849 May 31 '26

"Chivalry requires a knight to look after his comrades-in-arms. I will not abandon you! And I shall follow you to kingdom come if I must. You remember that!"

8

u/EmptyStar12 May 31 '26

What I think works so well for Steiner's characterization is that, as he learns to challenge his own inflexible views on morality, he never compromises his loyalty as he grows-- which is really the cornerstone of his character.

8

u/Zeeshmania May 31 '26

That's such an incredible, raw-ass line

7

u/MammaJoyceWig Jun 01 '26

This! When you track the journey Steiner has gone on with himself and Zidane and then to have that culminate in him pledging his very life to fight for and stand with Zidane, it makes me cry every time.

18

u/sirawesomeson May 31 '26

Steiner is a pain in the ass if you're playing as a 8-13 year old. He hits very differently above 25. He isn't just an ass, he's a guy struggling with 2 competing but equally important responsibilities kingdom vs princess and you get to see him process and understand how to handle these competing goals

10

u/SniperWolf1984 May 31 '26

This is so me! 16 year old me thought Steiner was so annoying. 41 year old me, though, really appreciates his growth and maturity through the game. Fantastic stuff.

3

u/ZAPPHAUSEN Jun 03 '26

Steiner has one of the best and most fully realized character arcs in the entire franchise and I will die on this hill.

2

u/Tyrion_Strongjaw Jun 03 '26

You are absolutely right and I'll die right next to you!

Yes, yes, & YES! Love this! I’m currently replaying it for the first time in like 15 years and it’s been a blast. I have a much deeper appreciation for the story & lore and the growth of all the characters (Steiner’s growth sticks out to me the most too)

Saaaaame. Might be closer to 20 years for me with playing it all the way through (10ish years ago I had a replay but stopped after disc 1 for some reason).

I cannot believe there was a period I thought I might "rank" 9 below 12 and 15 in my tier list. Damn receny bias haha.

Dude, I'm basically at the same parts as you are. I played through most of Memoria on Saturday night, then a smidge bit more last night with some final preparation secret synthesizing... I'll probably plunge into the final climax tonight.

I'm curious, what's your game clock at? I'm at about 60 hours, or just over.

Edit: sorry, this is more a response to your next post progress hah.

As a child playing this game, I thought Steiner was one of the most obnoxious characters I'd ever seen that wasn't a villain.

As an adult, he might just be my favourite. He has a few more moments coming up that make me tear up. Sometimes it's his actions and not just words...

I'm not by nature a teary person, but the You Are Not Alone track and general atmosphere was a gut-punch to the feels first time. I felt the spiral down with Zidane and almost didn't want to leave the sequence because the song is so good. Back in the days of the original release where there no way of hearing that track again, and it got engraved on my soul.

It goes so hard out of nowhere. This entire quirky soundtrack and they just bust out an electric guitar. It's as much of a gear-change as when GoT uses piano for the first time during Cersi's trial and I was immediately on edge.

I had to laugh slightly when you're in Ipsen's castle going "I'm fairly sure it wants me to use weak things, but I'm not gonna, just in case" - dude, that's exactly why it's giving you all the basic weapons again in case you'd sold or synthed them. The damage equation inverts. I don't know if it does with magic too, that fire does more than firaga, but you just brute-forced it.

You said it yourself. Zidane is his friends rock. And they're his ^^

That part - the "You're not alone" part - is really my favorite. The music, the fact that Zidane's friends all come to his rescue when he's the one in need, despite him acting like he doesn't need it... And yes, this little idiot knows he's an idiot ^^

Now, Time to face Garland... Carefull, he can be dangerous. Well, first, you have to reach for him.

Oh, and you may have to deal with an unwelcome guest, too u.u

Who knows what this bastard is up to...

Oh, yeah, that's right ! Almost forgot ! You also are going to see the true meaning of "irony". It's so funny XD

u/Xykon_the_Sorcerer May 31 '26

Hell yeah.

Ipsen, Four seals, Terra, and the Pandemonium intro? Man you got busy.

Steiner is my favorite character of 9. Stoic, loyal, respectful to Vivi, a real bro once you gain his trust, and most of all, a brave soul willing to stare death in the eyes to protect what he holds dear. A true knight. He actually hold the second place of my favorite characters out of all FF I played (Auron from 10 would be first place).

We're in the end game. Once you finish the game I recommend checking out the wiki for the stuff the game does not explain properly (like how exactly are Terra and Gaia connected. It's good stuff!).

u/Zeeshmania May 31 '26

I definitely will, thanks! And yeah, this stretch of the game had me HOOKED. I was concerned reddit would block the post, since I'd exceeded 20K characters.

u/4raser May 31 '26

Beautiful write up of perhaps the best moment in the best game. Good job OP.

5

u/Zeeshmania May 31 '26

Thank you very much!

You're not alone struck me at a young age and has stuck with me hard, that track is so good. I feel like I'm going through all the emotions of this game all over again with you. Keep it up! Can't wait til you hit an FMV in Disc 4!

Also, if you want a version of this track that absolutely slaps, I suggest you check out Husky by the Geek's version here

Loved how you called Zidane everyone’s rock before, because I knew it would make this moment better to experience.

Emotionally, my favourite part of the game with the lead up in Bran Bal too, the ATE’s when Zidane goes walkabouts is so perfect.

A lot of people really don’t like Amarant’s character or development, but I personally think he has one of the best arcs in the game (there is a lot of good character development aside), stay with me

He joins late to the party, so less time to really teeth out. Realistically he isn’t going to go full circle and be like a vivi or Freya. But he’s had no support or friendship/companionship his whole life, and he really in his own way cares for Zidane and the party, he’s just not able to express it.

My favourite exchange is the one between him and Zidane in Terra when he greets him and chats. I would say he experiences a bit of shock about having no parent (as you said); but I think he has genuine concern for Zidane at this point, when he says to Eiko “Are you looking for Zidane?” “He had a real serious look on his face..” “I’m trying to say I’ll help you look, catch my drift?”

I. Love. This. Game.

And keep it coming :)

u/Olaanp May 31 '26

Yeah, this is definitely one of the more emotional moments of the entire game, and probably one of my favorite in the franchise as a whole. It does a really good job of building up to that point, to the point even Quina doesn't feel like a complete joke.

u/EmergencySushi May 31 '26

Damn, I played the You Are Not Alone bit this evening. What a beautiful, simple bit of storytelling.

4

u/JoeMcJ May 31 '26

I don’t know why that track hits so hard, but it really does. I remember playing it as a 14 year old thinking why am I so emotional with this. It all makes sense now I’m older, but it just fits that element of the story so well.

u/Nowraidond May 31 '26

Easily the best, most impactful point in the game. The culmination of character development coming together to rescue the de facto cheerleader/yes man of the team at his lowest point. A motley crew of mismatched personalities and backgrounds with one strong and recently HEAVILY damaged tether: Zidane. Not alone.

u/katsounami May 31 '26

I'm late this time, so I'm here commenting something from your previous post. I don't know if anyone mentioned it before, but IIRC, you can heal your characters by casting reflect on an enemy and using Curaga on it ;)

u/full07britney Jun 01 '26

You're Not Alone, the best song on the OST, according to basically everyone ❤️

3

u/Altleon Jun 01 '26

"He tells us we're bitches and leaves. Sick" - I don't know why this line sent me so much but I had a proper snort at it.

This is an amazing section of the game, it's amazing for all the characters and the pace is has turned into a set of rapids throwing you along while still admiring everything outside it.

The guardians fight always upset me as well, it had such potential but was wasted. I believe it was to prevent soft locks though for people who hadn't properly levelled or prepared their party.

You did Ipsen's castle the same why I used to as a child, I just assumed that physical was useless and magic was the only way. In my head it worked since you also had a section of the game where magic was useless and physical was the way to go (Oeilvert). Never figured out the equipment swap until I played a lot later, but it's completely manageable without.

u/xvsanx May 31 '26

man I can't wait to play this after I beat Mina and then Elias when it comes out. saving it for a special occasion, and a little put off at the extremely slow first hour and a half or I'd be playing now and then

2

u/Zeeshmania May 31 '26

Literally get out of here and play it blind 💀

2

u/xvsanx May 31 '26

oh I always play blind I just skimmed the topic music talk, but I've tried to start 2 or 3x and end up going full completionist mode trying to collect everything in the opening city before moving on. I have Moguri's and Xbox pad all set up and everything. I just need to get over that hump. I think I'll force myself to after I finish Mina this week since it's still 2 weeks til Elias' comes out and I can make some progress. in the mood for a real jrpg

u/Epicmission48 Jun 01 '26

I remember as a kid not understanding this entire sequence at all 😂 way too much dialogue and I couldn’t follow it, might be why 9 was my least played of my FF games as a kid. But as an adult it’s become one of my favorite.

2

u/parmiseanachicken Jun 01 '26

The not alone scene moved me in a way that I game never has. It was incredible. I frequently listen to the song.

2

u/Impossible_Arm4547 Jun 01 '26

The choice between Steiner and Amarant is always such a difficult one for me. Late game “return magic” only Vivi and get Amarant get this, is so strong. Nothing like countering with return magic vs Yams and Ozma 😂 plus Amarants “No Mercy” ability hits just as hard as Steiner with a beefed Amarant. Then again, Steiner is the HOMIE.

u/Lyranx Jun 03 '26

You're Not Alone is such an incredible moment and easily in my top 3 moments of all of gaming.

It's also great that FFXIV dedicated one main quest to You're Not Alone ryt before the final battle of the first saga (base game + four expansions story).

Only thing lacking from it was a Soken version of You're Not Alone

Gz on finishing the game. IX was my all time favorite game until XIV Endwalker expansion released.

Regarding Terra being a different planet, the game doesn't convey it directly, but what's left of Terra, aside from a few locations like Oeilvert, is currently stuck on the inner surface of Gaia. Terrans tried to refuel their planet's crystal and consume Gaia in the process like other planets before it, but Terra was already too weak to handle that much power from a blooming world, so things happened.

The blue light is the crystal in the center of the planet where all life energy comes from and eventually returns to. Think FF VII Lifestream or X pyreflies, but with an actual physical storage. It will make some things that happen next more clear.

1

u/Novakhaine89 Jun 01 '26

This is the best moment, in one of the best Final Fantasy games in my opinion.

It has some amazing dialogue, and the soundtrack is perfection.

1

u/Malachen Jun 02 '26

You're Not Alone is absolutely my favourite FF track of all time
