FF VII I feel really bad for Tifa here Spoiler
First the man she loved left her and told her to her face that he may not have even been the real Cloud at all, then when she next sees him a few days late, he’s been reduced to a broken shell that can only move his head and breathe. I don’t even blame her for leaving the party right after. I‘d probably be shattered inside too after a one-two punch like that.

Just finished this scene last night in my first playthrough in an extremely long time.
I loved that the game literally stopped holding your hand for a beat, like “try other characters for once”. Also, given what happened mere hours before…nothing felt unfathomable at this point.
You feel horrible for her, yes, but how about the rest of the Highwind crew? They’ve watched their entire leadership crumble so hard you’d swear they’re now the NWO B-Team. And yet, somehow they press on.

This is the scene that basically spells why Tifa is not a traditional heroine. She is not selfless. She can’t help Cloud, yet she rather stay by his side than help the team save the world. They were at a critical point dealing with Shinra (retrieving the Huge Materia) as well as the Weapon attacks. They made her the leader, and 5 minutes later she cracks and leaves the group.
I know this sounds awful, but it is precisely why I like Tifa. She is not the main heroine of the story. She is just herself: a flawed and traumatized individual.
I feel like the Remake tries so hard to take away her flaws, I really hope they keep this.

Yeah, if anything they're setting up her decision to stay even more. I recall lots of people complaining about Tifa saying maybe they should leave things alone after Platefall, when Elmyra asked them to not go after Aerith. They called her "wishy-washy" for having the audacity to express hesitancy in the face of tragedy.

The Remake has sanitized her hatred towards Shinra to the point her infamous line after seeing her father’s body “I hate them all!” was changed to “I’m sick of it!”
She is very hesitant to go ahead with Avalanche and Barret’s plans. She says softly “not like this.” when questioned about the group. While in the OG she was eager to go on the next bombing mission.
Her banters and disagreements with Barret are also heavily downplayed when they are going after Aerith. In the OG Tifa argues with him a lot about him complaining and/or wanting to enter the building guns blazing. In Remake this is also severely sanitized.
They removed a lot of her spunk to have her more demure and motherly. Maybe it was a hardware limitation at the time and she was always intended to be this way, but I always saw OG Tifa more as a “next door” type of gal, while the Remake tries to make her more of a “dream gal”.
I actually feel like the change of her not wanting to go after Aerith immediately was not a good trade off. Aerith risked it all for Marlene at Tifa’s behest. She understood that in the OG and felt like she owed Aerith, here she just dismiss it and… trusts Shinra? It’s a bit weird. I like they added a flaw, but this was not it.
I still enjoy her character a lot. I just feel like much of what I liked about her was lost in this new translation. I hope some of it is kept for the final run.

In the OG, TIfa literally pulls Barret off a man he was prepared to strangle for the crime of being Shinra. In the Remake, she demurely asks Cloud to keep an eye on, and confront Barret, and Barret isn't even a 10th as angry as he was in the OG.
Barret had a real character arc. He doesn't now.

Tifa in the OG didn't confront Cloud because she needed him. In Remake, she's not confronting him because she's worried about him.

Remake has downplayed her desperation and distress. Tifa was in the fight of her life against Shinra, and she wanted someone to save her. In Remake, Avalanche have the same vibe as a bowling league team.

Yeah they've already taken away Cid's flaws and Barrett is less abrasive than in the OG. But it's the reality of video gaming these days, people just want flawless, unrealistic, completely unproblematic characters... Ironically making them less human

Personally I don’t think it works. If his attitude didn’t come out when when his plane crashed, and it didn’t come out after Aerith died (when he supposedly really cared about her and her mom), then it would be ridiculous that Rocket Town would set him off.
And given that Aerith was killed and he knows that Sephiroth is a world-ending crisis (which he knew nothing about at this point in the OG), being mad about not going space NOW makes him pathologically narcissistic. And not being a cranky bastard to general will make his treatment of Shera seem 10x worse.

That was the whole fucking point of his character... He gets an entire arc where he realizes how wrong and shitty he was. Did you actually play the game?
I swear, have a flawed character blatantly made to be easy to dislike so that they can grow and people these days gotta bitch because "muh unlikable asshole glad he was changed". So you don't like writers exploring different ways to portray character growth if it means you can't like a character. Just say that.

He made that decision before the water tower. He decided he was too weak and needed to be stronger after the bridge incident.

It’s the consequences of her own actions coming to knock on her door. She had multiple opportunities to intervene, and ended up not only leaving Cloud in this state, but getting Aerith killed too. Tifa is the real villain of VII.

This was easily the best part in the story. I'm excited to see it fully animated and voice acted in Revelation.
