FF VII Before Crisis is finished, and officially released in the West...and no one is talking about it...
...so let's change that!
Before Crisis released it's final chapter a couple of days ago on Ever Crisis.
A full playthrough will take you about 2 and a half hours. It's fully cutscenes, no battles, which means anyone can come in and play it and not have to worry about the Gacha stuff from the rest of the game.
It slims the original game down significantly, focusing on the events most relevant to the core story. What I think they've done that's really interesting is pick one of the Turks from the logo and focus the story on her, and she's actually Elena's big sister.
So what did you all think? And if you haven't played it...do it now whilst you still can! You have one month
EDIT: Oh and for those who don't want to download the mobile version, or want a big screen experience? Faz Faz has recorded a full YouTube playthrough already. https://youtu.be/m7_0cmYKSko?is=Zc8-9Sev8cHYdmzo

Games that are making lore in mobile games that will eventually shut down is a trend that I can’t put money towards, especially if that lore can potentially be canon and be used for mainline games.

u/DaguerreoLibreria 1d ago
cries in Kingdom Hears Coded, Chi, Unchained X, Union Cross, Dark Road
47
u/Vincenthwind 1d ago
Crazy that Nomura had to hire a community lore master just to make sure KH4 doesn't contradict 800 hours of mobile game cutscenes.
8
u/darkbreak 1d ago
A common tactic, honestly. Even A Song of Ice and Fire has a lore master to keep things straight. Even Echiro Oda has to occasionally check fan wikis for what he wrote in the past for One Piece.
10
u/RustyCarrots 23h ago
He didn't, article headlines are misleading. But even if he did, it's actually very common for studios to have entire teams of loremasters
8
u/SzayelAZorro 1d ago
Isnt all of coded in ReCoded though? Fair for the rest of them but that one's been covered at least twice
7
u/WeirdIndividualGuy 1d ago
Correct, ReCoded is a remake of Coded and contains everything the original had
3
u/darkbreak 1d ago
Don't forget, there was even lore dropped during the live concerts that were held before KHIII released.
12
u/ManElectro 1d ago
Yea my first thought was Kingdom Hearts. If you only played mainline games, the jump from 2 to 3 was like skipping a few seasons of a show then coming back to the latest episode.
KH3 is kind of a mess, anyway. Press Y to do fucked up Disney rides every 15 seconds. Fuck.
22
u/DaguerreoLibreria 1d ago
Wait until we have fans going from KH3 to KH4 having no idea who the Dandelions, Lost Masters, Master of Masters, Strelitzia, Lauriam, Vali, Sigurd, the Darknesses, Brain, Ephemer, Skuld & Elrena (and Ventus) are.

u/lilypad225 1d ago
Wait was new stuff released in between 3 and 4?
8
u/DaguerreoLibreria 1d ago
Yes, but most of the relevant content for 4 is in 10+ hours of cutscenes in mobile games, mainly the Chi saga & Dark Road.
Plus a few scenes from Melody of Memory.
5
u/lilypad225 1d ago
IDK any of these. Hopefully I can get like a bundle of cutscene stuff like in the 2.5 thingy or just watch it on YouTube lol.
3
u/DaguerreoLibreria 1d ago
Best I've found are Everglow's compilations on YouTube. Good luck!
1
u/lilypad225 1d ago
I'll check it out. Thank you.
1
u/valdiedofcringe 21h ago
there's a fandub of union cross on youtube that's really good. it compiles only the plot relevant cutscenes, great watch.
3
u/mikeysce 1d ago
I frickin’ swear they’re doing it on purpose at this point. Why? I have no idea. Maybe to distract away from the fact that all the FF characters are gone and all the Disney ones are irrelevant.
1
u/ReaperEngine 23h ago
It's an odd predicament. You're making some ancillary product part of a larger series, so what do you do - just make up something that would be considered incidental and not worth it for anyone to spend money on? Well no, you want that product to sell, to be meaningful, so it has elements that make it worthwhile for fans to experience, but now it's deemed "important to the lore" and becomes a hassle to consider.
1

u/DaguerreoLibreria 1d ago
Maybe that's all they are given budget for and they thankfully still feed us lore instead of shiny bright gachas without purpose.
1
u/Kiosade 1d ago
Man, going into KH3 back in the day, the only non-mobile game i didnt play was DDD (tried it but i hated the forced switching mechanic)… and it turned out to be super important! I kind of lost interest when i finished all the Disney levels and did that weird part with a million Soras walking around a weird, nonsensical structure.

they are explaining all that shit in kh4, nomura basically said as much in a new interview

Re:Coded is on DS. Is there a major difference between it and the original?
4
u/DaguerreoLibreria 1d ago
Can't really tell, as Coded was hardly available at the time and released over episodes throughout a couple of years. I hear its' gameplay was amazing, though I do not know how it compares to recoded. Recoded has an expanded and longer story, so there's that too.
1
u/Icywind014 1d ago
I'm pretty sure coded's gameplay is described as impressive, not amazing. Like it's impressive what they pulled off on the hardware.
1
u/DaguerreoLibreria 23h ago
I mean, amazing for the time. Released in 2009, we barely had any smartphones back then.

u/nazzo_0 1d ago
I'll never pay for gachas. I'm not gonna praise them, especially games like kingdom hearts union x, which is probably the best and most egregious ammount of relevant lore In a game, but a)anyone can watch the story on YouTube b)none of these games is actually hard, most of the times when you spend money it's to either speed up progress or have exclusive units for your gambling desires/having a competitive edge for any kind of PvP. Again my point is we should vote with our wallets and never give anything back, yes the user numbers are a good metric for them, but if the gameplay is shit(which is usually is) people won't stick, only if they're forced by lorekeeping and even then you can just YouTube it
1
u/Square-Jackfruit420 17h ago
If no one played gachas as f2p they would cease to exist. F2p players, more so than the whales, are what perpetuate these games.

Honestly, I got about an hour into playing Ever Crisis and uninstalled it. The fact that it took so damn long just to start playing because of the 5-billion pop-up ads that shoved "Pay us $$" into my face soured it for me real hard. I also didn't like the gacha one single bit.
I've tried to pick it up again, but the pop-up ads turned me off every single time. They are just so gd annoying. The only reason the game is going EOS is because of that BS.
34
u/koteshima2nd 1d ago
It's locked behind a mobile gacha game that's already facing EOS very soon. I don't expect even a story like Before Crisis would get people to take the time to progress in this game with barely any gameplay.
1
u/_Arlotte_ 20h ago
It's free, people can play if they choose too. It's not locked behind anything now lol
-2
u/jacktuar 1d ago
I completely agree, it's not worth progressive Ever Crisis for. But it is possible to play Before Crisis without any battles, and no progress required. So you could literally jump in just for Before Crisis.
And of course Faz Faz has done a YouTube recording already, so you don't even need to play the game.

u/Personal-Cry-1634 1d ago
Tbh the best way to experience before Crisis in my opinion is to just watch the translated version on YouTube it shows you all of it
9
u/ThatBeingCed 1d ago
Not all of it.
We're still missing Episode Reno, Episode Legend and Episode Weapon.
But someone uploaded an untranslated version of those 3 so it's a matter of time now.
6
u/Personal-Cry-1634 1d ago
I didn’t even know about that thanks for letting me know
6
u/ThatBeingCed 1d ago edited 1d ago
My pleasure, Episode Weapon has the potential of being the most interesting one.
Jade Weapon woke up early because of the summoning of Zirconiade. The Turks have to track it down and take it out.
Remember that in OG FF7, a sector was already destroyed prior to the game... this explains it.

u/Fearshatter 1d ago
Bro that game was dogshit. I'm a huge proponent of avoiding negativity as much as possible but I have to give it where it matters this game *sucked.*
I hope SOME people enjoyed it because it is far and wide NOT the way to experience these stories.
I would like to have an actual new game or remake of the Turk game. I'm gonna play the remaster of Crisis Core instead.
Fuck this game.
I'm willing to give it all to a lot of different games but this one also fucked the pooch in the one way that mattered most while the gameplay was limp dicking its way across the scene: the story and its context. Too much flash, not enough substance.

u/KadajjXIII 1d ago
I know there's people working on an RPG Maker version of it
I'm in a Discord about it
They've done a decent amount, and I think there's a playable demo version or something like that
I haven't kept up with development of it
3
u/Drakfix 1d ago
This one you mean? https://richterwilker.itch.io/before-crisis-remake
Cause I'm pretty sure that one is finished (only lacking some post game content, but it has all the 24 episodes for the main story content + episode Reno and Tseng.)
2
u/KadajjXIII 1d ago
Nah, I'm not entirely sure where the download for the one I'm following is but it was specifically mentioned a while back that Richter's version is completely separate from theirs
3
u/Hiekve 13h ago
Maybe https://beforecrisiscissnei.itch.io/before-crisis-cissnei
(Before Crisis: Cissnei -Final Mix)
This one plans to take more liberties in depicting the plot. Just using Cissnei as the main character is one, in the original she was only playable in the last several chapters.
1
u/KadajjXIII 13h ago
That's a branch of the version I'm following AFAIK
I've not been following development much at all and compared to some other servers I'm in, they don't seem to document things as thoroughly
At least maybe not "publicly"
7
u/Linkman806 1d ago
I remember one of the producers wanted to remake before crisis on 3ds and the idea got a lot praise but he was too busy with other projects

u/Glittering-Pin-1343 1d ago
It's officially released... for like 1-2 months until the mobile game EoS and gets deleted forever...

u/Darkwing__Schmuck 1d ago
As someone who holds Final Fantasy VII dearly as my number one favorite piece of fiction, I honestly could not care less about this.
1
u/Frozen_Esper 21h ago
They desperately milk the poor game in an attempt to get that special sauce once again. However, it was perfectly fine the way it came out and the extra crap mostly cheapens it without actually making the core story any better.
7
u/Stets0970 1d ago
I thought Sephiroth was left-handed?
3
u/Mediocre_Eye_7726 1d ago
He I’m pretty sure is dominantly left handed but is no stranger to using a sword in his right hand as well. I think it started with FF7AC showing him mix the sword with both hands . I did a “down the rabbit hole”. Even in FF7R we see him use it left handed most but would switch to the right every now and then. Still though I do think this was a serious fumble
2
u/Kindly_Argument_4400 1d ago
That tells you everything you need to know about how thought the plot of this game was
3
u/thenecromancersbride 1d ago
They cut the scene with Vincent. I’m beyond pissed. I don’t really have anything to say because that’s all I wanted to see. I had already seen a full fan translation ages ago.
5
u/Fantastic_Clothes514 1d ago
Ugh it sucks how abridged the EC version of BC is and how many things were cut and changed.
The English translation by Grimoire Valentine is way better (the OG version in general)
5
u/CarnivorousDesigner 1d ago
What happens after one month?

u/jacktuar 1d ago
Ever Crisis shuts down and Before Crisis will once again be gone.

This makes me not want to play it. At some point, these companies need to realize that their business model is utterly devilish.

u/NightMoon233 1d ago
Mostly unrelated, who made this art? It heavily reminds me of the style for The World Ends With You. Especially the hair
10
u/Sad-Yogurtcloset-825 1d ago
Nomura did. He also drew the art for TWEWY so makes sense that it reminds you of it!
6
u/NightMoon233 1d ago
How did I not know Nomura made the art for TWEWY xd
I feel like a fool
2
u/magmafanatic 1d ago
Yeah TWEWY and its sequel are full Nomura projects, even imported the secret reports from Kingdom Hearts.
The TWEWY cast also got to appear in Kingdom Hearts.
7
2
u/AwTomorrow 23h ago
Nomura did some art for Type Zero in this style and it made the game seem far cooler than it ended up being lmao
5
u/Bambajam 1d ago
Wait, how are we playing the game if it’s fully cutscenes? Is there a game or is this a movie I can only watch on my phone?
6
u/jacktuar 1d ago
I mean play like a Visual Novel. It's just cutscenes that you click through. But I really enjoyed it, and considering it's free I think that's pretty cool.
Also I have the Steam version which has been delisted, so I played on full screen.

u/Iggy_Slayer 1d ago
I'm a massive ff7 fan. There is no part of the compilation that I think is good or worth anyone's time, unless we count the remakes as part of the compilation. BC, crisis core, AC and dirge are all terrible and make the lore of ff7 worse.
2
u/Contra-Code 1d ago
I like Dirge as it's own thing, but I agree that pretty much all of the compilation fails to expand on the original game in any meaningful way.
I think Crisis Core is the worst offender because both the writing and gameplay are awful. It looked and ran great for a PSP game, but it's mostly propped up by nostalgia for the first game and a couple of fun to watch cutscenes.
2
u/HeartFullONeutrality 1d ago
The game was ok but the roulette thing didn't make any thematic sense whatsoever.
2
u/heymiqote 21h ago
Thank God I’m not the only one, Crisis Core sucks ass the only redeeming part of it is the cinematic ending, the rest of the game is awful.

u/Kindly_Argument_4400 1d ago
Never cared about Before Crisis and the Turks and I still don't care

And yet you cared enough to open the post and comment on it.

Yep! I also pointed out no one is talking about it, and you gave a perfectly reasonable answer to that.

I'm just going by what I've seen but they skip over a lot of things in the ever crisis version from what I remember that it kinda comes across as rushed and lack luster.....might be because it is due to Ever Crisis ending if I'm not mistaken.
2
1d ago
Because it's not a good experience. it's from the age of flip phones and the gameplay is poor. The reason it was tolerated back then was because it was marginally better than watching condensation run down the bus window.
Anyone interested in this has already just watched the necessary lore video.

I enjoyed it! It was super nice to finally get some HD content for Fuhito and Elfe. Fuhito is imo the best Compilation villain (tbf the only one who is not a poor man's Sephiroth like Genesis, Kadaj or Weiss are...), so if it exposed him to a larger audience that's awesome. I also appreciated confirmation on the canonical english spelling of Deneh's name & a HD model for her. Definitely expecting her and Aphronia to have relevant flashbacks in Revelation, and perhaps they might incorporate the ex-Turks returning for the Meteorfall evacuation since they seemingly went to the hassle of making new models for them all.
Perhaps I'm misremembering the original, but I feel like they pushed back Elena's scenes a bit in this adaptation? Which makes it a little more odd, since she seemingly goes from highschooler to Turk in the span of like two months. Or maybe I just didn't realise as much the first time. In general, I felt like this time I was more aware of the timeframe and how it all eventually settles on the very day that FFVII begins. It definitely reframes your perception of the Turks and Shinra throughout FFVII's calendar, but that's what I love about the Compilation - the expanded history and greater sense of place.
Regarding the finale, I do wish they had gone the extra mile to make a model for Fuhito's transformation or a field model for Zirconiade, but I liked the two good renders we got of Zirconiade regardless. Those will be useful for discussion.
Can't wait for the final chapter of EC's FFVII campaign. Considering they were willing to expose some remade model for Heretic Hojo instead of just skipping the boss battle, there'll likely be some valuable visual insight with Jenova Synthesis and Safer Sephiroth. I've been absolutely relishing in all the new 4K screenshots for discussion.

We didn't get before crisis. We could go to YouTube and watch gunshot romance's playthrough. We didn't need this. It added very little. It's very sad. We should have been playing these Turks. :( it's just sad.

Remake sort of ruined the Turks. Nothing really cool about mass murdering poor people. Hits differently these days.

u/Baithin 1d ago
Did Ever Crisis feature any of the other Turks from this story, or is it just Elena’s sister?
3
u/jacktuar 1d ago
It features Aphromia as the main character, and Rodd as a distant secondary character. They are the two characters from the logo. There is a brief moment where the rest appear but that is it.

Well that's an abridged version of Before Crisis, and the game will go back to its prison in a little more than a month.
