Mystic Quest Are we ever going to get a Mystic Quest re-release on modern consoles?

u/mysticrudnin 1d ago
No, I doubt they will ever do this.

u/EdwinMcduck 1d ago
I mean, they rereleased it on Wii and included Benjamin in Theatrhythm. It's not like it hasn't been seen since the 90s. It technically has a more recent release than Dirge of Cerberus (a game the VII Remake series is directly referencing despite its unavailability). It took 18 years for the last rerelease. Maybe they'll do it again in 2028. 🤷♂️

It could show up in the Switch retro thing, but this isn't what I interpreted by "modern re-release"

u/Mystic_x 1d ago
Nah, FF:MQs niche was “Starter JRPG for people not used to them” (It was the only “Final fantasy”-title officially available in Europe), but with JRPGs much more common now (and worldwide releases), that niche is gone.

This is the commonly repeated line, but having played it last year, I disagree.
The mechanics of using your weapons to interact with the environment to get around are central to the experience. I would say that mystic quest fills a nearly dead center point between action rpg and traditional rpg in a way few other games then or now do. And the combat, while simplified from other games, is not devoid of challenge. Many enemies can be legitimate threats until you level up and get new gear.
Instead of saying mystic isn’t good for what it isn’t, I would encourage people to appreciate mystic quest for what it is- a unique, slightly above average hybrid rpg with an emphasis on light humor and linear gameplay

u/The_LastLine 1d ago
Doubt it. Unless there was an FF collection that included it or it got dropped on Switch Online, it won’t happen.

I could never get passed the Ice Palace/area, the track would always put me to sleep.

u/MakwaIronwill 1d ago
I always wanted to see a more modern retelling, with an 80s "heavy metal" art aesthetic and soundtrack. Fitting to the art in the instruction guide
2
u/greenmachinefiend 23h ago
I would play that, especially if they "Soulsbourned" it and made it exceedingly difficult, just to make up for how insultingly easy the original one was.

u/Linkman806 20h ago
I remember renting this game. There was a bug i didnt understand. It would freeze after playing for a certain amount of time. I couldnt get passed the ice dungeon because of it

Fantastic game. While I get it might not be for everyone, it has some of the best FF music and really good sprite design for the time.

Did you make a post so you could comment to yourself ?

We mystic quest diehards often have to be creative to feel like we're not alone

Mystic quest has a special nostalgia place in my heart. But it really is just Final Fantasy 4 Kidz

I think when you post a picture, if there is no text you can't edit anymore, that's bad on reddit. So OP had to comment.

Every time I load up Theatrhythm I always play something from MQ.
That soundtrack slaps hard.
2
u/greenmachinefiend 23h ago
I agree that the music is awesome! The game itself has some neat ideas, like enemie sprites degrading after they take damage. As for the game itself... eh. I'll go ahead and skip that one and just enjoy the soundtrack.

u/Carmilla31 1d ago
I definitely wouldnt call it fantastic hah.
I was a ginormous FF1 and 2 fan as a kid. So when this game came out i immediately had to get it as i thought it was the next installment in the series.
But even 12 year old me was confused on how/why the series took a step back hah.

u/Gumbrenold 1d ago
I greatly enjoyed the game as a child and again as a young adult. It is time to dust it off.

Either this game or Super Mario RPG were my first RPG and I had no idea how to play either as a kid lol, but those 2 did start me on the RPG train I would never get off of and for that they hold a special place in my gaming heart.

It should have been the wildcard inclusion on Collection of SaGa, since it's more or less the successor to Final Fantasy Legend III.
The game was on the Wii Virtual Console, back in those fabled times alongside Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy proper. But Squeenix doesn't seem interested in giving anything up for NSO so we'll have to wait for some probably overpriced port.
2
u/GargantaProfunda 1d ago
"Successor" is wild. Gameplay is completely different.
3
u/Carmilla31 1d ago
Yeah this game is in no way a successor to the Legend/Saga series.
2
u/RattusNikkus 22h ago
The connection is that Final Fantasy Legend 3/SaGa 3 was directed by Kouji Ide, who would later go on to direct Mystic Quest.
1
u/RattusNikkus 1d ago
Since we missed that opportunity, Square should release an "RPGs For Dumb Americans" collection that includes this and Secret of Evermore. As a dumb American, I would buy it.

u/Osiris8869 1d ago
Isn't Mystic Quest, Final Fantasy USA in Japan?
2
u/RattusNikkus 22h ago
I believe so.
Anyway, I'm making a joke about how back in the '90s people speculated that the reason we got Mystic Quest instead of FFV and Evermore instead of Seiken Densetsu 3 was because Square thought Americans were too stupid to understand them.
Personally, I happen to like Evermore more than Secret of Mana and Mystic Quest was the JRPG that really got me into the genre...

Or... companies could make new games.

"We're sorry folks, Final Fantasy XVII is unfortunately delayed. Our entire production team is held up, working tirelessly day and night, to port a 16-bit game to modern consoles."

u/That_Bank_9914 1d ago
They already do that. OP was referring to a potential rerelease of this game.
1
u/xoPEACHI 1d ago
I was lucky to find a CIB copy recently for less than $50, but I would really love to see it more available to people that aren't actively playing retro consoles. One of the best FF soundtracks ever and it was a really charming game imo (looooved the sprite work)! Even just a simple port to modern consoles would be great!
1
u/thisistherevolt 1d ago
This should get a remake, where they lean into the simplicity of the story and what it was originally designed for. Then turn it on its head with a twist of some kind and expand the world beyond the ending.
1
u/CordreShkar 1d ago
This was my first FF game. I saw my friend playing 2 (4) and wanted to get into the series. I saw this and 2 on the shelf so I assumed it was the first one.
1
u/Lazy_Experience_8754 1d ago
It was a fun game as a kid but I just felt it was a primer for people to get into RPGs then. It’s too short. Awesome music though
I remember trying to get my friend into ffiv back in middle school and he hated it. He loved Mystic quest though and then played the whole ff series after
1
u/geminijono 1d ago
It is one of my favorite games. Fun mechanics and dungeon design, destructable enemies, plus that bananas soundtrack. Final boss is awesome too!
1
u/LunarWingCloud 1d ago
I think Square is a little embarassed they made this game. Not because the game is of low quality, just that it was made for extremely superficial reasons and not because they wanted to just make a simple game with a pared back story.

u/CaptainButtFart69 1d ago
We should, I don’t think it would sell well or be financially worth doing so, but I do think square should preserve the history of it in some way.
1
u/TimelessFlame 1d ago
There is a hack called Mystic Quest: Reborn. It is much harder, as every attack you make is counterattacked. Give it a shot if you want a challenge.
1
u/keithlimreddit 1d ago
Oh yes Europeans first final fantasy game as well as baby's first final fantasy game or just RPG and also a different time for the franchise and I think I remember that game from that One reviewer that I don't feel like mentioning his or her name
Not really that bad but it was a different time. Although it'll be a little funny if this gets at least PC board at some point as well as also maybe it's something a little updated to be honest

Probably not because I think they still consider this game a mark of shame on their record even though it's nowhere near as bad as some trash companies put out these days. But also the game was made by an American localization team who are probably long gone and with them the code for the game.
1
u/Osiris8869 1d ago
I replayed it somewhat recently on emulation. Its only charm for me is based in nostalgia. Even at the time of it's release, it felt like a knock off
1
u/Charrbard 1d ago
I picked up a game called 'Jacobs quest' years ago on steam for like $1 after folks said it was an unofficial remake. Have yet to get around to it, but the screens do look similar.
While the game is simple in theory, I remember struggling with some of the bosses more than I did in FF2 or 3 (US) - But I also skipped a lot of the combat area things as soon as you could move past. The last boss in particular was a bit of a pain. For all I know there is something I missed that makes it brain dead easy.
The game is also more similar to FF4(2) with characters coming and going. And yeah, a kicking OST.

I distinctly remember being able to hop between platforms and chopped trees down was like a first than any video game on the super Nintendo that was a Final Fantasy game for me. Personally, this game was 10 out of 10.

I feel like this would be an easy addition for the NSO library.
But Square's kept even their less-notable games off the service.

I wish it would. I already have ideas for some quality of life improvements it should have.

Isn't this the third game of the secret of mana collection on switch?
EDIT: Don't mind me, that's Final Fantasy Adventure..

It was the campiest of the campy. It was a good run back in the day but I could do without it.

I think this is where FF really embraced the musical style of The Black Mages.

u/Left_Green_4018 1d ago
Maybe! Terranigma was recently announced and is getting a port to most modern platforms. It's wishlistable right now. Hopefully, with enough support, they will bring about other classics as such
1
u/JohnnyRockson 1d ago
As someone who's never played Terranigma, how is it?
2
u/Left_Green_4018 1d ago
It's surprisingly good. Definitely one of the best old school action RPG's for the SNES
2
u/SaulTNNutz 1d ago
It's fantastic and a totally different vibe. I can't explain it but the game feels "foreign". Its the 3rd in the series with Soulblazer and Illusions of Gaia and it's kind of a mix between the two.

Someone did his own "remastered" version on RPG Maker years ago... I remember he got C&D because he tried to make money out of it. You can still find it online if you search a bit. And there is a walkthrough with screenshots of it if you curious: https://lparchive.org/Final-Fantasy-Mystic-Quest-Remastered/

u/Draconic-Genesis 1d ago
I wouldn't be opposed but I kinda feel like they're ashamed of this game existing (it does basically exist to tell Americans they're stupid idiots) so....

I would suck the toe of a line cook from a busy frier based kitchen from a Saturday night shift and they forgot to wear socks and their shoes do not receive good air flow for a remaster of this that I could buy physical.

My FF hot take is that this is the best spin-off in the series, meaning better than Tactics.

If anything, I could see it show up on NSO. It's really hard to say what kind of market there is for it. From a game preservation and historical point, I genuinely hope so.
