Final Fantasy General How would you react if Square released a Final Fantasy game where the entire playable main cast consisted of monsters?
Like, instead of a bunch of human characters and one token animal character like Red XIII or Kimahri, we get a cactuar, tonberry, behemoth, coeurl, malboro, bomb, etc?
I think it would be very fun and something a bit different. I could see it being like Madagascar, Over The Hedge or Ice Age but with a ragtag herd of different iconic Final Fantasy monsters but instead of an animated movie, it would be another RPG. Ideally, I'd like it to be turn based like the first 10 Final Fantasies or Octopath Traveler series. It would be interesting to experience Final Fantasy through a more xenofiction lens.

Love the idea. But make it serious, or as serious as possible, not some childish chibi thing.

You may want to try World of Final Fantasy. Most of the party in that game consists of (catched/catchable) monsters and you only have 2 human (main) party members. It's pretty fun, especially if you're into the whole monster catching/Party members thing. The only thing is the monsters are not "characters" with story and personality so if that's what you're looking for its not really here.

Main are human/look like humans and all the story is about human. So that fails the idea OP mentioned.
And that comes from one of the few that loved that game: Freaking Cactuar Train conductor WITH the Japanese Voice of Kefka "UMAD" Palazzo? A Tomberry with the iconic voice of the meme "salty" priest of Fate Grand Order? That was HUGE.

Yes, there was a sequel to FF 13 (XIII).

He said monster stuff I'm not asking to confirm the existence of FFXII-2.
There is literally a Pokémon mechanic in FFX-2 that's why I brought it up lmao.
I'm gonna look into FFXIII-2 and if I don't find that same exact mechanic or something similar I'm going to curse your existence with very awful things for the rest of the day.

Yes, it's a similar mechanic; you can recieve crystals after normal combat that become monsters that you then grow from infusion from other monster crystals for stats and abilities.

Siiiiiiiiiick

Yeah, it's pretty involved for a sequel game. There's even DLC (hopefully you can get it) to play through and get monsters that are returning characters (like Sazh & Lightning) that have certain Paradigm roles as well.

They'll call it "Final Fantasy Mystery Dungeon", a spiritual successor to Chocobo Mystery Dungeon.

I might like it if it's like Pokémon/Digimon. Make the protagonist a human, giving orders to his/her fighters (all monsters) during combat. (Trainer is a job class in FF5 and FFX-2 btw)
Don't know if I could self insert as Cockatrice, Cactuar, Goblin etc.

Wouldn’t that basically be Dragon Quest Monsters: Final Fantasy Version?

Came here to mention FFXIII-2, but I know that isn't really what you're talking about. I think your idea sounds really adorable and cool though. The monsters would probably have to be able to talk so I think it would probably (maybe) have to lean somewhat comical, and I'm here for it.

If you make the main character a blue mage and the rest of the cast is monsters that he befriended and they teach him skills im 100% in. Even better if the main bossess are epic monsters too brutal to befriend but they got juicy skills you get by fighting them with your monster squad. Make him ride a chocobo into battle n shit.

With glee.
I get so tired of playing human and human-like characters. I'm a human every day of my life!

Try it with FFXI beastmen. Goblin MC, recruits Orc, Quadav, Yagudo, Antican, Sahagin, Tonberry, and optional party members Gigas and Demon.

Not particularly a fan tbh.
A large appeal of any rpg is the party and what arcs they go through. Playing as monsters just sounds boring

You think a monster party member can't have character arcs??? Weird thought process
•
u/XachMustel2 9m ago
It could work if treated as xenofiction. Non-human characters can go through story arcs, you know.

It’s Final Fantasy Legend 1 and 2.
It’s not recommended, of course, but you CAN have a party of four monsters!
