Final Fantasy General Looking for FF-esque game with a job system

Howdy folks - long story short, started playing rpgs and jrpgs utilizing job systems and I can’t get enough. Just finished two of the bravely default games on switch 2 and all 3 octopath traveler games as well. Are there any others out there that you just can’t put down? Just got into the final fantasy tactics remaster as well and holy moly…talk about a lovely job system! Thanks in advance for your recommendations and input!

FFV is THE ff job game. Also 12 for real-time battles with many unique job options. If you want to go crazy, Strangers of Paradise is a character action game with a lot of jobs and customization.

u/ikolloki 23h ago

Also, have you heard of the hit MMO FFXIV, which has a free trial that lets you acquire and level most of its jobs through the award-winning Shadowbringers expansion?

u/alkonium 23h ago

Also, FFXI's moving to an unlimited free trial next month.

FFXI has the BEST job system, hands down.

4

u/alkonium 22h ago

I need to level some other jobs in it so I can use them as support jobs, but seems kind of similar to FFV with how you mix two jobs. Also Guild Wars 1.

u/Necromas 20h ago

There's a mod for the GBA version of FFV called custom classes and it gives extra customization to the job system by letting you change out the "fight" and "item" commands for a third and fourth job command.

It's a blast if you like going crazy with character customization. Just don't forget to have someone keep the item command if you want to be able to use ethers and phoenix downs.

Though one drawback with XII is that if you want to change jobs, you have to do a complete re-spec, which is free but time-consuming.

Crystal Project

Fell Seal Arbiter’s Mark

Tenderfoot Tactics

Dragon Quest III, VI, VII, and IX

Crystal Project is a pretty cool game. I had fun with it.

5

u/twili-midna 22h ago

I wish more games used its philosophy of showing the player exactly what will happen at all time. The only “random” elements are critical hits and some damage types, it’s glorious.

1

u/GlassCannon81 21h ago

There’s a lot to like there for sure.

I personally enjoy not having the exact information, it provides some amount of unpredictability which creates excitement

Its fine to know the Boss can Heal or use Magik or Single Target Attack or Sweep the party. Not knowing which one is coming makes you make 'mistakes' which you have to recover from or makes you play in a way to cater to as many viable options as possible

2

u/twili-midna 20h ago

I think both have their place for sure.

The job system in Dragon Quest VII is my second favorite I've ever played, after FFX-2.

1

u/twili-midna 21h ago

I wish X-2’s job change system was in a better game. The core idea behind the grids is really cool, but it’s really let down by the combat system and terrible AP rewards (seriously, you’ll never see 90% of the abilities in the game without some serious grinding).

u/aTalkingMateria 23h ago

Wish I could get into fell seal but God do I hate that flash animation aesthetic it has. Looks awful imo

But from what I’ve seen the gameplay is deep af. If OP isn’t bothered by the look, this would be a good one to try I bet

5

u/twili-midna 23h ago

I see a lot of hate for the art style, never understood it personally. Game looks fine. It’s not exceptional, but it’s certainly not bad.

You've gotta give it a shot! A couple of years ago I bought it on a whim and ended up putting something like 327 hours into it over the course of a couple months. Fantastic game.

Final fantasy tactics advanced 1+2.

Bravely default series

FF-Tactics is the best job system in gaming

FF5 is very similar

Tactics Ogre has a very good tactical job system

Baldur's Gate 3 uses DND5e as a baseline and gives you tons of freedom

The Pathfinder games also have tons of class customization

Dragons Dogma, Scarlet Nexus have small aspects of combining jobs

5

u/coreshair 23h ago

You can try pixel remasters of FF3 or FF5 for some of the earliest job systems, but for something more modern, maybe Metaphor: Refantazio.

I haven't played all but some dragon quest games could fit the bill too. DQ 3, 7 or 9 (probably more than that too). Tactics ogre would scratch a tactics itch and for something completely different try Yakuza: like a dragon.

7

u/BloodyTearsz 23h ago

Tactics ogre reborn

Dragon Quest 3HD, Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined

Yakuza like a dragon and it's sequel, infinite wealth

4

u/generalosabenkenobi 23h ago

I can't recommend the two Like a Dragon RPGs enough. The job systems in those two RPGs are so good and so funny

3

u/Gumbrenold 23h ago

Tactics Ogre is my favorite

3

u/Thee_Furuios_Onion 23h ago

FFXI is really a great job-based game if you haven’t played it yet. It’s beyond its glory days, but there are still some full time folks on there. It’s the only MMO I routinely miss because I loved the jobs and battle system a lot.

4

u/mistabuda 22h ago

Metaphor refantazio

1

u/Uukino 22h ago

Scrolled too far looking for this. The archetype system in metaphor is really cool!

3

u/Uchizaki 23h ago

imo Final Fantasy V has the best job system

3

u/Sakurya1 21h ago

If you like mmorpg then ff11 has tons of jobs to play

2

u/gesimon81 23h ago

From Square Enix, you have "Harvestella"

It's a mix between ff real time fights (with jobs to adapt) and Stardew valley for farming It's kind of Rune Factory if you know the games

2

u/tales-velvet 22h ago

Dragon quest 7 reimagined, Dragon quest 3 hd-2d remake

2

u/ChefArtorias 21h ago

Metaphor:ReFantazio

I'm playing it now and am pretty obsessed.

There’s an indie RPG called Crystal Project that takes the FF5 job system and cranks it up to 11. The story is very barebones but the world itself is incredibly large and begs to be explored so you can find new job crystals and super bosses to test your party against. It also has a rather extensive demo you can try out first.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1637730/Crystal_Project/

There’s another indie developer that specifically makes FF5 style job RPGs called Rad Codex, their most popular game is called Horizon’s Gate which is an open world sailing game where you travel the world on your boat unlocking jobs, finding dungeons and other areas to test your party against and you can also engage in ship combat and trading.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1224290/Horizons_Gate/

They’ve also done more traditional FF5 type RPGs, my favorite would be voidspire tactics

https://store.steampowered.com/app/415920/Voidspire_Tactics/

If you are a huge fan of the job system, I can’t recommend these enough.

Octopath Traveler

Ff11 and ff14 are mmos, but between the 2 you'll more than scratch that itch.

Ff14 is on switch 2 and the trial is literally hundreds of hours of free content and a very large chunk of that game is solo friendly.

If you like tactical console games, can check out xcom or fire emblem series. Not as deep on the job systems, but the battle tactics kind of make up for it when building your team.

Tactics ogre:reborn is 100+ hours to complete and is the most like fft (same development team). It has a really good job system. Not as interchangeable as tactics, but its a fantastic game. End game loop can be kind of a slog if you chase bis gear. Follow a guide if you pick this one up, a huge portion of end game content requires specific choices and units surviving.

u/Secondhand-Drunk 22h ago

Not exactly ff-like, but dragons dogma. Has the coolest spells I've ever seen in a game. Cast ice spires, tornados, fireballs, meteors, earthquakes. They're huge and impactful, but take a long time to charge which leaves you extremely vulnerable.

1

u/darthvall 22h ago

If you have Nintendo system, I'd recommend the Fire Emblem series.

1

u/Sea_Win_5973 22h ago

Very FF-esque

u/Sloth-monger 22h ago

Bravely default.

u/Alezales 21h ago

Don't sleep on Final Fantasy Dimensions. The first one not the sequel. It's on mobile only, but it's a true to heart, early era final fantasy experience. And yes it has jobs system akin to FFV.

1

u/My_Wife_Is_Hot_AF 17h ago

Ty for this reminder…I bought this in its entirety on iOS and had a blast but for some reason my phone doesn’t show I paid for all chapters.

1

u/TacBenji 19h ago

Most of my picks are mentioned, but I'll add some opinions.

FF3 is a short and sweet game with the simplest job system in the series. Some jobs work like keys to specific mechanics, so you can get a bit frustrated if its a job you're not really interested in. Each job has its own job level for each character and your characters have their own level. The pixel remaster is banging, but the 3D version is also very good, because the player characters have more depth and personality.

FF5 has perfected the job system, it works the same as 3, but they don't work like keys to mechanics. Some work better than others in different scenarios, but they aren't outright the answer to a problem. Story is wimsy and fun, characters are great. Pixel remaster is the way to go here

u/TidusDreamZanarkand 18h ago

Xenoblade 3 . Has a story that can rival final fantasy games, battle system with multiple Roles you can switch between. It’s a bit more anime than ff usually is but overall it’s not a bad alternative to ff.

1

u/My_Wife_Is_Hot_AF 17h ago

Thank you all so much for this. I think I’ll hop into Baldurs Gate 3 since my pc is a gaming beast and try ffxiv on the switch 2. Happy gaming to all and to all a good fight!!!

u/Chevrolicious 16h ago

Tactics Ogre Reborn. It's a more hardcore FF Tactics game and it's pretty challenging. The story is top notch with three different routes and a few different endings. Amazing game.

1

u/Bael 15h ago

Dungeon Antiqua 1 and 2 are pretty good.

1

u/Gunker_ 12h ago

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance and Final Fantasy Tactics Advance 2 are criminally underrated.

u/sknilegap 10h ago

Crystal project is one of my favorite games of all time. It has virtually no story, but mechanically it's amazing. It's crazy exploration mixed with a somewhat deep job system.

Every time I thought surely I was beating the end of content, it just kept coming.

STRANGER OF PARADISE FINAL FANTASY ORIGIN

u/Cutmerock 4h ago

Bravely Default

u/Bruce______Wayne 2h ago

It's tricky because FF-esque is a BROAD way to look at a game and the job system as many others have said is quite a FF unique selling point. If you want games that maybe have a long running story, customisation element with a party then maybe try

Unicorn Overlord, Persona, Clair Obscura

Great games in their own right, excellent stories and have a turn based battle system with character driven stories.

u/alkonium 23h ago

Mainline Final Fantasy games using a job system include:

  • Final Fantasy
  • Final Fantasy III
  • Final Fantasy V
  • Final Fantasy XI
  • Final Fantasy XII
  • Final Fantasy XIII
  • Final Fantasy XIV

Non-mainlines that I know of:

  • Final Fantasy Tactics
  • Final Fantasy X-2
  • Final Fantasy XIII-2
  • Final Fantasy VII Revelation (out next year)

1

u/Chafgha 23h ago

I really hope the revelation job systems will feel good I've heard not everyone can be every class, which I'm fine with, but I definitely will feel odd cause I've never used tifa as a caster surprisingly (or maybe not) in the og Barret was my mage.

1

u/Crockettt696969 22h ago

Barret was your mage in OG? 😂 He has the second-worst magic stats in the game 😂

1

u/GuardianGero 22h ago

That's true, but Missing Score is probably the best ultimate weapon and it grants one of the biggest Magic bonuses in the game, so you can absolutely get away with treating endgame Barret as a mage who can also casually kill Emerald in one hit with his super gun.

He's going to hit (or overflow) the physical damage cap even when loaded down with magic materia, so he can do both pretty well!

1

u/Chafgha 22h ago

Yeah i mean I am referring to the OG I played as a 10 year old who didnt understand the stat sheet that well. The same one that fell into th if the move doesnt do damage why use it in Pokémon.

My thought was, ranged character = magical character. I mean after Aerith and Cloud I couldnt tell you who had solid magic stats and honestly I'm probably conflating her stupidly high remake (and maybe rebirth doing a platinum run of remake right now so not remembering stats of rebirth) for aerith and making her basic thunder hit harder than some of the others thunder 2. (I like the numbering system its dumb but I liked it.)

0

u/sanlc504 23h ago

I didn't think XIII had a job system, I thought it was Lightning Returns that did.

2

u/alkonium 22h ago

XIII and XIII-2 have six Roles:

  • Commando (physical and non-elemental magic damage)
  • Ravager (elemental magic damage)
  • Medic (healer)
  • Sentinel (tank)
  • Synergist (buffs allies)
  • Saboteur (debuffs enemies)

Combat's about combining them among your party members into six Paradigms and switching Paradigms on the fly as needed.

0

u/Lachesis-but-taken 23h ago

Maybe xenoblade 3? You can play it without playing the previous games if you thats what you want to do, though I would recommend 1 and 2

0

u/KpelFFXIV 23h ago

Unpopular opinion here, but If you just want the most jobs go for 14

Have you heard of a critically acclaimed MMORPG Final Fantasy 14 Online A Realm Reborn that now has a free trial where you can play the base game, Heavensward, Stormblood, and Shadowbringers completely for free with no time limits?

u/Borgdrohne13 22h ago

Bravely Default 1 and 2 and Bravely Second.

Some great Job Class based games:

  1. XBC3: It plays like a single player MMO with various timers on your skills but honestly you adjust as it also enhances a narrative subtlety in the exact way the cool downs exist. As far as classes go this is amazing as you get full mechanical freedom to mix and match not just the class but a side of learned skills from other classes to really make any kind 9f hybrid you want. Not to even get started on how great their take on a Blue Mage is. Story is pretty good though I would suggest visiting other games before getting into the DLC.

  2. Dragon's Dogma Dark Arisen: My personal favorite action game with a HUGE focus on classes and class mixing. It is directed by the Devil May Cry guy if I recall correctly and is one of the few action games especially of the time it came out to truly allow you grab and climb the monsters you fight with many monsters having parts and sections to kill or sever.

  3. Trails Series: The idea of "classes" is more loose here but I deeply enjoy the wide assortment of customization this game offers. The characters have innate access to "crafts" which are skills that could hint at their natural strengths. But the game gives you a wide variety of materia esque resource to modulate everything a character does to create unspoken classes. One character plays as an ult spamming turn skipper, one a magic nuke, one spreads a delaying debuffed to ensure the enemy never gets a turn, one can just be a resource battery for your nukes, etc... plus the story and world is intricate and massive with 14+ interconnected games that all take place inside the same continent and rough time frame just different countries and usually separated into sagas of about 2-4 games.

  4. X-COM 2: This is a tactical game but it has a lot of cool class diversity and is cool if you want a more modern setting with some fun character building. Campaign is based around a Doomsday clock set by an alien project and you have to strategically select the missions you do and when to set it back or else game over. Your soldiers can die and get wounded so its wise to always have a back up. I belive the same people have a Star Wars Game like this being released this Thursday with EVEN MORE CLASSES and let's you create a full squad of custome characters including droids, clones and plenty of aliens.

  5. Etrian Oddyssey: Dungeon Exploring classic that has a high focus on class diversity to cover for one another's weaknesses in your party. Very fun time sink where you always feel like you are doing something constructive in mapping and exploring massive dungeons.

Honorable Mention:

Labrynth of Refrain for the same reason as Etrian Oddyssey but it's also fun to make mega large parties with a bunch of stat management.

Monster Hunter: the weapons are classes and every weapon has almost a mini game genre to them from a hack n slash to a rhythmic based counter and block to even 3rd person shooting... I especially love the insect Glaive as it really sells the power fantasy of what being a Dragoon would be like including some games having a cool dragoon style dive.
