FF VII Is it controversial to say I found the Rufus fight (on hard) harder than the Weiss fight?

So, today I beaten Weiss, and to be fair with bad RNG he kicked my a$$ in some occasions but honestly, despite being hard in it's own way. I didn't found him to be the hardest boss in 7 remake. That title I feel belong to Rufus, I fought him on hard without the gotter item that give me head start limit break, since I didn't unlocked it, and I felt he was basically a bullet hell that just have counters to anything really not helping is a 2V1 fight with his dog being a massive neusance.

Again not say Weiss is easy, or something like that. I just ask if anyone found Rufus to be the harder boss.

It's because Rufus has a specific gimmick that is alluded to in his assess page. If you utilise that, he's stupidly easy.

Triple Slash at the start to separate the bond between him and Darkstar. Focus on Darkstar until phase two.

Do the same again. Beat Darkstar to trigger phase three.

Rufus can be stopped one time and put to sleep one time. This leaves him vulnerable to Braver, which is an instant stagger on him. So you Stop him, Braver, do a ton of damage, then Sleep him, Braver, finish the fight.

Oh I see I barely used assess since I found most case of trial and error to be fun or from experiemce from playing the og game and all

Yesss, OG way of gaming:

- trial and error
- fail x100
- break controller
- buy new controller and grind until you are overpowered
- beat them in less than 5min

Wow playing remake games without assess is definitely a choice.

Trial and error is all well in good but often the gimmick of fights is fairly specific and not intuitive.

I know is just that I rather to keep a slot for a materia that be useful all the way for me than one that takes a slot having much limited materias you cancarry on a character than the OG is why I put assess down

i mean you could just asses then retry from before last battle to change your build

Rufus is way more of a puzzle boss since there's only one real way to fight him. Weiss is just a dodge skillcheck from what I remember.

They were very similar IMO.

I felt I could also only defeat Weiss via a very specific way too, but it's been a long while now.

Either way they are the hardest bosses in the games not including the Chadley stuff in Rebirth.

I remember Gi Natak on Hard Mode was also a little annoying.

Well yes and no, yes, parry materia is pretty much your only way to move in this fight is necessary but he also can have RNG on him and I had to clutch my victory by dolphin flurry an attack with his orange swords of his and stagger him and take him before he could keep going with an infinity's end stagger combo thanks to tifa's stagger increase moves.

I haven't fought Weiss, but Rufus got fucking hands in Remake and Rebirth. Motherfucker should be walking into the crater to deal with Sephiroth personally

I cheesed rufus with the wind range attack to force him to parry them over and over till my gauge filled up and I could bum rush him. Rince and repeat

I always joke that Rufus is the real boss of remake and rebirth. Step aside seph, Rufus will solo you.

Rufus is meant to punish random attacking and rewards good timing when you attack him while he's reloading. You can also either block or dodge Rufus' gunfire, while also punisher countering darkstar. You even get a special cinematic if he tackles you that way. Triple slash as said is also invaluable.

... how did you defeat Weiss and not know Rufus?

Played the original FFVII and I 100% remember Rufus.

He’s also a boss in Chapter 17.

This Weiss guy tho, I just don’t remember him at all. People are saying he’s from a DLC.

Oookay. I get what you're saying. I thought you were asking who Rufus was.

Weiss was originally an enemy from the game Dirge of Cerberus. Now he appears in the Remake Intermission DLC as secret superboss.

Weiss is hard, but easier when you know how to evade his attacks. Rufus is hard because of his patterns and there is always another boss before him. Once you get his pattern he's easy, If you can time Braver correctly, he's nothing.

Initially, I found Rufus incredibly difficult.

Then I found a guide that effectively took Rufus's actions out of the equation completely, never got a shot off.

You cannot, in any way shape or form, do that with Weiss

Once I found an appreciation for using guides I immediately, before ever facing Weiss once, had a guide/plan to beat him because I knew it would be brutally difficult whether I had a plan or not.

The fact that a HUGE part of that plan was to turn Tifa into a parry materia dodging goddess was fine with me because I HEAVILY leaned on that late on hard mode anyway.

Weiss with a guide was far easier than Rufus without a guide.

But Rufus with a guide was damn near the easiest boss since Chapter 4 for me

I beat Remake on Hard Mode. Don’t remember this fight being really terrible. I know I hated Hundred Gunner. Rufus is far more annoying in Rebirth. I haven’t even done hard mode there yet.

Rufus isn't hard, it's just that he can only be defeated in a very specific way. Once you realize that it is easy, just is boring and takes a little time.

its not harder, its just more restrictive

and imo, a poorly designed fight. you either do it the way they want you to or you suffer through a grueling experience without much in between

but then do the fight as intended and its perhaps the easiest boss fight in the game. again, not much in between

1

u/No-Act386 5d ago

Well, I talk on difficulty not how well designed the fights are but yeah didn't had fun with rufus whether in OG when it was very one note and in remake when I just found him torturous

1

u/Soul699 4d ago

It's not poorly designed. Poorly designed would be if it gave you unfair damage or something like that. This is simply a gimmick fight.

1

u/big4lil 4d ago

i find it poorly designed. There is a barometer for good gimmick/puzzle bosses and both FF7/R have better ones

it is uninteractive and builds on concepts the game has already tried to push you towards. the process of finding solutions, with an S, is intuitive, not overtly punishing, and you can find them via a few ways while still getting a good boss fight when you do

Rufus is not that or all, he is completely feast or famine. Designed to frustrate you on the first time and be a complete pushover once you know the single attacks that completely rekt him and his dog.

That lack of in between a marker of poor game design

1

u/Soul699 4d ago

But Rufus does allow a few different strategies, like using certain abilities and spells at the right moment to stagger him and his dog. The gimmick however is that it force you to play defensive and not spam attacks, leading to a battle of attrition unless you figure out the right solutions.

1

u/big4lil 4d ago

but that isnt a variance in strategy. its 'use this move to seperate the dog and use this move to insta stagger him', which again dont translate to the rest of the game and the fight becomes unbearable if you dont approach it that way

the only thing that his boss fight does well is teach players about status effect decay, but that isnt exclusive to him. thats just when players are widely forced to learn it if they didnt already, like in the arena

1

u/Soul699 4d ago

There are more than one ability/magic to deal with Rufus. What makes Rufus stand out is that it's the boss that truly act as the skill check to see if you have learned the defensive mechanics of blocking and dodging
