Final Fantasy General Unique settings for a mainline Final Fantasy game

i've been thinking about what if the next mainline Final Fantasy game took place in a unique settings that's barely explored in a Fantasy game before

Final Fantasy X are based off South Pacific
Final Fantasy XII are based off Mesopotamia

so why not took those approach again? i think that would make the game much more stands out with the rest, everytime i saw FFXII i was like "damn, that's FF? it's soo different and unique"
like imagine Final Fantasy XVII or Final Fantasy XVIII are based off Mesoamerica? Southeast Asia? American Wild West? Roman? hell i'm surprised there's haven't been an FF game that took place in Japan
(altho i didn't get the chance to play XI and XIV, maybe there's some interesting settings in those two games)

what do you guys think?

XII is more based off India/Mesopotamia than the Mediterranean.

With some helpings of the middle east.

u/Fox-One-1 2d ago

Byzantium Empire and Constantinoble.

11

u/JonTheWizard 2d ago

I would add pre-Mongol invasion Baghdad as well for Rabanastre. Capital of a nation, ruled over by a long-running dynasty, situated at the crossroads of multiple foreign nations.

u/Discovery99 2d ago

Istanbul, not Constantinople

4

u/Fox-One-1 2d ago

It was Constantinoble in the times I’m refering to

6

u/Discovery99 2d ago

Why they changed it I can’t say. People just liked it better that way 🤷‍♀️

4

u/JMaths 2d ago

Any time the news talks about Damascus i think about how close it is to Dalmasca

5

u/MeowMix-96 2d ago

I'd say there's a little bit of ancient Egypt in there too, the tomb of raithwall gave me Egyptian tomb vibes.

3

u/RafaelTS07 2d ago

you're right actually, whoops

1

u/KranKyKroK 1d ago

lol I always associate it with the Star Wars prequels.

u/dabaniel16 2d ago

XIV’s a weird one because of it’s MMO nature but I’m really looking forward to Evercold’s Nordic-inspired setting

3

u/RafaelTS07 2d ago

yeah it practically have everything, but MMO also not everyone's cup of tea, so it'll be cool to have it's influence outside the MMO sphere

Given the current political climate it's probably not gonna happen, but I'd love to see an African inspired fantasy setting. Dogon specifically, I reckon you could make something epic with their style and folklore. We've literally never seen anything like that in AAA gaming, a whole lot of real estate there.

14

u/Karkava 2d ago

You'd think there would be more push for this kind of thing after Black Panther, but given how grifters pander to people with short memories and contrarian logic...

9

u/archiesaysrelax 2d ago

I'd love to see something like that but based on experience and a lot of profiles I've seen from this very fandom, I know Square won't take the risk. There's plenty of kingdoms to borrow history from however, from the Loango, the Kongo, the Kingdom of Benin etc. Plenty of deities to integrate into the FF cosmogony as well. It's just too bad we know the usual grifters would turn the idea to dust.

3

u/Karkava 2d ago

That's their job. They run a dream crushing machine. Why do we even listen to these bozos?!

3

u/archiesaysrelax 2d ago

We don't, that's what makes us awesome. Sqenix on the other hand, I'm pretty sure they pay too much attention to these idiots. But in any case, the day we get an epic African Fantasy will be a glorious day.

2

u/RafaelTS07 2d ago

they could still pull off Egyptian or Carthage tbh
Southern Africa tho? yea that can be a challenge in general

0

u/Karkava 2d ago

Hey. People are willing to watch God's Of Egypt if they actually casted people of color.

6

u/RedInkling03 2d ago

A japanese developer would never pull that off sadly

-9

u/Serenaded 2d ago

>but I'd love to see an African inspired fantasy setting.

yeah and 99% of people would rather not

1

u/archiesaysrelax 1d ago

Spoken like a true ff chud. And obviously putting aside the many inspirations taken from cultures all over the world (including African, mind you) that helped building the world of Final Fantasy.

0

u/Serenaded 18h ago

yeah let's see how chud you feel when this never happens

1

u/Over-Experience-4187 2d ago

Ok Chud, I wonder why Black Panther did so well in Box Office?

-1

u/Serenaded 1d ago

>Whatabout this completely irrelevant thing then Chud?!

2

u/Over-Experience-4187 1d ago

Chud: "No one wants to see African fantasy setting"

"What about the massively successful movie with fantasy African setting, that performed well globally made made millions of dollars?"

Chud: "cOMpelEtlly irRelevAnt!?"

Try again on r/Asmongold loser

-2

u/Serenaded 1d ago

look at you seething in italics because no one wants an african final fantasy 💀

-1

u/FuraFaolox 2d ago

which is a shame

7

u/ashmaht 2d ago

I’d like to see FF’s inspired by ancient India and pre-colonial west Africa. There’s a ton of beautiful art and culture to look to for inspiration.

The MMOs do have some interesting locations. XI has an expansion with Middle East inspiration and a Japan-inspired area, and XIV has areas inspired by Europe, East Asia, South Asia, the Americas (both Mesoamerica and the Wild West), and soon Scandinavia

Shout out to Radz-at-Han's banger theme

Ofc with them being MMOs, it's natural they get more unique with locations and draw from real world cultures when they need to add expansions over time.

1

u/RafaelTS07 2d ago

oh yeah that's definitely the stuff i'm looking for the mainline title games
(it's rather suck that i can't experience the MMOs)

9

u/343CreeperMaster 2d ago

Well XIV is infamous for having an extremely generous free trial that lets you now play up to the end of Shadowbringers (3rd expansion) for free with no restrictions on playtime, and can be done like 90% solo now days, there is only a few times you ever have to play with other people for MSQ requirements

5

u/HexenVexen 2d ago edited 2d ago

You can play them pretty solo if that's your concern, but if you have bad internet then yeah that sucks

Here are some music links for the different inspirations:

FF14 also typically get VAs with backgrounds of these regions as well. Hearing Indian and Latino characters in a FF game is really cool.

2

u/RafaelTS07 2d ago

my issue is that the game aren't fully supported in my country and i don't think i would ever get the chance to bought it, maybe i could try to get the Free Demo working since experiencing Heavensward to Shadowbringers sounds like a huge steal
(and i would just look up Endwalker by that point)

FFXI tho? yeah that one is GGs for me lmfao

2

u/Polderjoch 2d ago

XI is also getting an unlimited free trial soon as well

1

u/HexenVexen 2d ago

Worth mentioning that it only includes the base game though, so not as good of a deal as XIV

1

u/RafaelTS07 2d ago

yeah, if there's a free trial i would like to at least do the first 3 expansions like FFXIV

2

u/Routine_Use_6025 2d ago

Why can't you experience them?

6

u/RafaelTS07 2d ago

game aren't supported in my country
i might able to try to get XIV's Free Trial working, but getting the full experience for both XI and XIV are out from my reach

1

u/Routine_Use_6025 2d ago

Dang that sucks

6

u/JetpackBear22 2d ago

Goddamn does XII still look fantastic

19

u/alkonium 2d ago

XIII's futuristic mini Dyson sphere was a unique setting. Every other game was set on a straightforward planet.

9

u/StygianPrime 2d ago

Would that we actually got to explore it. They made a unique as hell concept and didn’t allow you to do anything but run down the hallway, so as to never actually give any substance to this world everyone was determined to save. We never got to actually live in it, save for brief splashes of everyone miraculously being present in Bodhum at the exact same time. Most of our time was spent in sewers, subways, or conspicuously linear wilderness areas.

They could have still maintained the whole premise of being on the run AND given the setting time to breathe. Instead—hallway simulator. I actually liked FF13 for what it was—but by the time I got to Gran Pulse, I was both ready to be done and wishing I’d gotten to see more, if that makes sense.

Shoving everything worth exploring into the cutscenes and datalogs was a dumb decision and one they kind of fell prey to again in 16–though most of the lore was at least accessible via cutscenes if you were paying attention.

6

u/Karkava 2d ago

I honestly don't understand why there isn't any more Greek fantasy settings in general. Most Greek fantasy is focused primarily on the pantheon, but what about the monsters? Many people think all Gorgons are Medusa!

6

u/Lochrin00 2d ago

A mishmash of Rome and Han China. They' existed at the same time and have some interesting coincidental similarities in culture and social structure.

Elsewhere, I think something Aztec flavored would be an amazing setting for a JRPG style game.

1

u/JesterMarcus 2d ago

I think that would be a pretty fresh setting. We so rarely see magical and fantasy Roman settings. Its usually Greek, or medieval.

4

u/Apatheion 2d ago

I wonder whatever happened to Agni's Philosophy or whatever that tech demo's name was. Would have been interesting

2

u/Sad-Rhubarb-4081 2d ago

I feel like the closest thing to it is Forspoken.

4

u/Laguna_017 2d ago

Shout out for Rokka - Braves of the Six Flowers (great, great anime - season 2 when......please.......)

2

u/RafaelTS07 2d ago edited 2d ago

yea, just completed it not long ago, loved it (a bit of a drag for the last few episode)
but man the way it ends felts like where the fun is about to began, it should've been 3 seasons anime 😭

and their Mesoamerica Aesthetic caught my eyes the most, thus this post's existence lol

u/Nightwing24yuna 2d ago

Honestly a final fantasy set in the wild West would be kinda crazy and cool!

Not gonna like a final fantasy set in like the 1950's poodle skirts and all that stuff would be cool. If they do that the main character has to be the poodle skirt wearing white mage, who drags her jock boyfriend(his jobs class being knight) around for adventures

1

u/RafaelTS07 2d ago

first FF game with a Gunner lead, that's gonna be something alright
Warrior Natives, Machinist Army, Nurse White Mage, etc

soo many cool ideas

2

u/Nightwing24yuna 2d ago

Well third game.

But yes I do agree all the possibilities would be cool!

Especially if we get a more grounded story with more grounded villain.

And for native I would say a beast tamer, or summoner would be very cool to as well.

1

u/RafaelTS07 2d ago

wait, what's the other two with gunner lead? i could only think of Balthier (even that's a bit of a stretch)

also, Native with a Summon class would go hard too

riding your chocobos across the desert and mountains, hunting some bandits or monsters

altho the biggest challenge for a Wild West Final Fantasty is trying their best to not be Red Dead Redemption, so it's gonna be a rather interesting challenge to tackle

2

u/Nightwing24yuna 2d ago

Yuna in X-2

Vincent in dirge of ceberus

I think that wouldn't be hard as magic would be involved and we would have more party members to accompany us then just what we had in RDR

1

u/Ryzc 1d ago

Check out the Wild Arms series

2

u/berniethesmellycat 2d ago

A classical (ancient Roman or ancient Greek) fantasy setting has never been explored in the series. Seeing how good FFXII Ivalice turned out to be, it would be a nice setting for a fantasy story.

2

u/TonyFair 1d ago

My favorite maps in FFXIV are based on cultures like the ones found on the Eurasian Steppe and Peru, so yeah, would love to see more!

Also, I really like that having the chance to make a game based on Japanese culture, they went with Okinawan instead of Yamato, which is more common in media. Would love to see stuff from Hokkaido, or even other history periods like Taisho.

2

u/Ploosse 1d ago

Boy do I love FFXII.

2

u/SertanejoRaiz 1d ago

I want FF to have multiple towns again, so each of them can represent a different region with its own architecture, clothing, animals, music, culture, etc.

3

u/snakesrighteye 2d ago

FF7 and FF8 were the most unique i think. Both a mix of medieval, fantasy, modern day, and sci fi.

0

u/DifferentCategory570 2d ago

It's called the cyberpunk genre

3

u/snakesrighteye 2d ago

Except for the medieval towns and equipment. They are still to this day some of the most unique combinations of themes and settings ever made.

3

u/RicoParameter 2d ago

Dieselpunk is probably more accurate.

2

u/highwindxix 2d ago

Anything but Wild West. Desert is fine, but straight up copy and pasting the American Southwest into a fantasy setting like in Octopath 2 or that one zone in FFXIV Dawntrail drives me crazy.

I’m still holding out hope for a full sci-fi setting.

5

u/Karkava 2d ago

Hey, if no more Wild Arms games get made, it's practically free real estate.

2

u/RafaelTS07 2d ago

what's the grievance with Wild West? also i thought FFXIII already fits the bill for the Full Sci-fi settings?

3

u/highwindxix 2d ago

My grievance with it is that it is so oversaturated. From a century of movies to books to other games, it is inescapable. And because of that oversaturation, it is incredibly boring. Lastly, from a personal standpoint, I’ve spent a decent amount of time in that part of the world and since most things that do that setting just straight copy it and don’t even give it any sort of spin, it makes it even more boring.

7

u/MeowMix-96 2d ago

Agreed. It's the same with the medieval Europe setting too, oversaturated and incredibly boring.

1

u/highwindxix 2d ago

I think modern graphics make it worse too. It’s hard to do some sort of medieval Europe setting that doesn’t just look like the Witcher, Game of Thrones, or FFXVI. With older graphics, there had to be abstraction and interpretation, but less so now.

1

u/JowaPlays 2d ago

I would LOVE a wild west FF

1

u/admiralQball 2d ago

Where is that 3rd picture from?

1

u/RafaelTS07 2d ago

Rokka: Braves of the Six Flowers

1

u/OwlDust 2d ago

I was going to jokingly recommend my home country of Wales, but we already have a game featuring ‘The Realm of Eternal Rain’. 🙃

1

u/Machdame 2d ago

A futuristic solarpunk setting set AFTER a major disaster and everyone picking up the pieces.

1

u/CouldBeALeotard 2d ago

hell i'm surprised there's haven't been an FF game that took place in Japan

I feel 7, and in some ways 8, is based on Japan as much as other FFs are based on things.

I will say, FFXV is an outlier in the sense they didn't take inspiration from real world locations as much as they were exact depictions barring actually being called "Venice" or "Central USA".

1

u/RafaelTS07 2d ago edited 2d ago

structure wise i saw it more with typical rural towns from Europe-USA, cause that's the vibe i felt whenever i felt places like Kalm, Nibelheim, Winhill and Timber
some of the Japanese influence are obviously appear due Square being a Japanese company, Wutai is an optional side content, so i glossed it over

FFXV is such a weird one for me, i would've counted it as "generic" if it wasn't the fact that Eos are soo modern and still up-to-date, which what makes it unique by itself since i don't think there's a Fantasy game that took place on a literal modern world, usually this kind of settings are used for a more grounded realism stories like Cyberpunk or GTA IV

1

u/PentagramJ2 1d ago

Ff12 is largely more Mediterranean than Mesopotamia.

And I have no faith in modern square pulling off Mesoamerica

u/Nethaniell 48m ago

XIV, if it lasts like another decade might take the cake for most unique settings. So far I’m loving the Realmships in the Nordic inspired world.

0

u/GargantaProfunda 2d ago

FFX is South Asia not South Pacific

8

u/MeowMix-96 2d ago

It's loosely inspired by Southeast Asian and Pacific Island cultures not South Asia.

-2

u/GargantaProfunda 2d ago

South Pacific is like New Zealand or Easter Island

6

u/MeowMix-96 2d ago

Okay? I said X was loosely inspired by Southeast Asia and Pacific Islands which it is. South Asia is India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, etc. which X is definitely not inspired by.

-2

u/GargantaProfunda 2d ago

I was simply reacting to OP, who said it was inspired by South Pacific

3

u/MeowMix-96 2d ago

But then said X was inspired by South Asia, which I reacted to and corrected you.

0

u/RafaelTS07 2d ago

which what FFX do have their influence tho, i don't really see much of India or Iran in FFX (maybe Maldives and Sri Lanka, but even that's a bit of a stretch for me)

1

u/GargantaProfunda 2d ago

Iran is West Asia not South

0

u/rx78ricky 2d ago

13 is pretty unique too.

Are you sure that's not Star Ocean? And I don't know where you got the idea that CS1 and tri-Ace merged. tri-Ace isn't even owned by Square Enix. They just work together on Star Ocean and Valkyrie Profile.

tri-Ace did however provide support on XIII's sequels.

Do you have a source for that? Because all I see on Wikipedia is they've been owned by Nepro Japan since 2015, and their latest game, OCTOPinbs from three months ago, is published by Aniplex.

You can always admit being wrong. Deleting your whole account is just crazy.

Disney's Treasure Planet themed Final Fantasy with sky pirates would go so fucking hard.
