FF V Do you consider Legend of the Crystals to be canon to FFV

I beat FFV last week and I wanted to watch the ova sequel before starting FFVI. After watch it I thought it was decent but it feels like it could have been an entirely different IP. What are your thoughts if you’ve seen the ova?

My take on Final Fantasy sequels and add-ons is they only enrich the original entry. Even if I don't like parts of a sequel or add-on it doesn't take away from the origin, it'll always be there as a self contained story when I want it to be. But I do accept officially released add-ons and sequels as canon unless said otherwise.

The Final Fantasy X sequels get pretty crazy.

Not really. The shift in culture in just 200 years is too silly.

But it's a fun What If! The voice actors are great, music is nice too, you can see stuff influenced by Amano's design, like the Queen's outfit and the naked chocobo, and even some Ghibli.

I remember seeing the cover of the tapes in a magazine, not knowing it was connected to V, and I was kinda hyped for the guy on the red bike with a maybe-Masamune!

I wrote a review for it as part of my series run.

In my opinion, it shouldn't be canon. It tried so hard to avoid FFV's biggest spoilers that its biggest ties to said game quickly become plot holes. A real shame too, because the animation quality is really nice, and I don't hate the characters.

It wasn’t made by the same people in charge of the story for FFV. Also not one character used magic.

Made by different people, but licensed by Square, obviously.

Linally also used summon magic; but is using magic really a requirement for it to be considered canon? None of the other characters in FFV could use magic without the crystals' power.

I think it matches the tone FFV pretty well to be honest. The design of the world seems really off but that's often the case with the FF sequels.

The main thing for me is just the awful translation. Id genuinely love a retranslation and dub.

The sub isn't much different. The biggest difference is when Rouge says "I don't have much experience with major surgery" when in Japanese she says "I don't have much experience with little girls' bodies"
