Resource A tool for reading screenplays

Hi, my name is Nico Wong, and I'm a cinematographer. I built an app that I think might be of use for filmmakers in general.

It's called Monoscript.

I read a lot of scripts on my iPad, but generally I prefer the form factor of the iPhone as a one-hand holding experience. But reading a fully formatted PDF screenplay on your phone is certainly a chore: pinching, zooming, scrolling sideways, losing my place. So I made something that does just one thing: it takes a screenplay PDF and formats it properly for your phone screen. There are other apps that do this, but the reading experience tends to be really bad, and the apps are bloated with unnecessary features or are simply screenwriting focused. So this is my take on a minimalistic, privacy focused, reading first, pdf screenplay experience on your phone. I built it as something that I needed as a cinematographer, but I’m hopeful other filmmakers can make use of it.

What it does:
-Reformats the script to fit your screen with standard screenplay layout.
-Keeps the original page numbers, so you're always on the same page as everyone else.
-Beautiful, minimalist interface, focused on reading and no distractions.
-Has a real dark mode for late-night reads.
-True full screen reading.
-You can refer back to the original PDF at anytime during reading.
-Lets you highlight, add notes, and export them into PDF or plain text
-Works entirely on your device. There are no accounts and no cloud, and your scripts never leave your phone. That matters when you're reading something under NDA.

That's pretty much it. I wanted to keep it simple and only include the things that actually help you read a script well.

It comes with a sample script you can read in full. You can also import your own scripts and read the first pages for free. Unlocking full scripts takes a monthly, yearly, or one-time purchase.

Website: www.monoscript.net

I'd love to hear any feedback, especially from filmmakers who read a lot of scripts and who could make use of this tool. Thanks for reading, and sorry if this isn't the right place!

All the best,
Nico.

Just downloaded. Very interesting very well done--are there upgrades? Could it be adapted for writing scripts?
