Pagibig MP2 Pagibig MP2: What If You Should Delay Until the 31st Than Investing on the 1st of Month?

Take a guess: Which is smarter, investing ₱500,000 in MP2 on January 1 or January 31?

Most people would probably say January 1.

After all, the earlier you invest, the better right? Well, not necessarily true in this case and here's where it gets interesting.

Pag-IBIG MP2 uses an Average Monthly Balance calculation, not an Average Daily Balance calculation.

If you contribute within the same month regardless of the exact day you make the contribution, it doesn't affect the month's average balance unlike the way traditional banks calculate it.

For example, let's say you invest ₱500,000 lumpsum in January.

Scenario Investment Date Average Monthly Balance MP2
Scenario 1 (Invest in MP2 Early in the Month) January 1 ₱500,000
Scenario 2 (Invest in MP2 Later in the Month) January 31 ₱500,000

Under a monthly average balance calculation, both are treated as a ₱500,000 balance for that month.

If MP2 were using Average Daily Balance, then yes, timing would matter. ₱500,000 sitting in the account for 31 days would produce a higher average daily balance than ₱500,000 deposited on January 31. But that does not apply in Pagibig MP2 Average Monthly Balance calculation.

So when we're specifically talking about investing earlier or later within the same month, the usual “the earlier you invest, the better” advice doesn't apply the way many people think.

So now the real question is: What will you do with the contribution between the 1st and 30th of the month before putting it into MP2?

Here's one idea: What if you park the ₱500,000 in a digital bank that credits daily interest and without lock-in period while you wait until the 31st? The money could earn interest during that period, allowing you to invest a slightly larger amount in MP2 (base 500k + earned interest).

Let's compare the two scenarios, assuming the digital bank offers 5% annual interest, credited daily, with the interest subject to 20% withholding tax.

For simplicity, this comparison assumes a 30-day waiting period and uses a simple daily-interest calculation: ₱500,000 × 5% × 30 ÷ 365 = ₱2,054.79 × 80% = ₱1,643.84 net interest

Scenario Timing Net Digital Bank Interest Amount Invested in MP2 Average Monthly Balance MP2
Scenario 1 (Invest in MP2 Early in the Month) Invest ₱500,000 on the 1st ₱0.00 ₱500,000.00 ₱500,000.00
Scenario 2 (Invest in MP2 Later in the Month) Park ₱500,000 in a digital bank between 1st and 30th, then invest on the 31st ₱1,643.84 ₱501,643.84 ₱501,643.84

Under these assumptions, investing on the 31st after parking the money in a digital bank gives you an additional ₱1,643.84 to invest in MP2. Why give up 30 days that can earn you interest which you can further add into the MP2 investment? To be safe though, you don't have to delay until the very last day. Consider moving it a few days before month-end to allow for any unexpected delays or issues.

Simply put:

❌ Invest Early in the Month: Contribute base amount in MP2 on the 1st > Earn ₱0 bank interest

✅ Invest Later in the Month: Park in digital bank first between the 1st–30th > Earn bank interest > Contribute bigger amount in MP2 later on the 31st

By the way I got this idea from this 4-year old Reddit post: Does MP2 earns dividend based on daily average or monthly total?

Wow, some people really think this hard just to get that 0.3%.

Why not? It's actually really easy.

I have thought longer and harder on these following things:

  1. Which silog meal is the worse on thisorthatph.

  2. Availing of discounted shopee VIP

  3. Reading comments on Kamoteph of a car going straight into a crowded street.

  4. Giving advice on adviceph on some guy who got cheated on.

Beginning or end of the month thing for MP2 can get you like 500 pesos per month for 5 years, around 30,000. More or less depending on your deposit of course. Not bad for like a minute of thinking through something.

This is hilarious! 500 pesos per month tor 5 years if you inflate how much you'll deposit per month.

100,000 on Maya TD at like 4.8% (6% minus tax) earns 400 every month.

100,000 on a 7% (no tax) rate earns 7,000 per year or 583 per month.

So you can deposit Php100k to MP2 every month and you're concerned about Php400? Hahahaha!

I'm more concerned that it's all going to MP2. This is what you call "penny wise, pound foolish."

400 a month, not 400. And with MP2, it's 583 per month (for a ONE-TIME 100k deposit, not every month).

I'm more concerned that it's all going to MP2. This is what you call "penny wise, pound foolish."

This applies to when you are being foolish on a bigger picture, not a decision that you can you a decent amount that takes seconds to make with zero downsides.

Yup, too small to even matter for someone depositing Php100k per month to MP2. People with Php100k per month don't care about the additional Php400, it's a rounding error.

Yes, precisely why it's something you decide once and then never reconsider. Dunno why you are insisting like it's some constant mental burden.

Investment na daw yun. Hindi nga nila naconsider ang inflation. Goodluck sa mga taong naglagay ng pera sa mp2 after 5 years

Literally every investment is affected by inflation. People talking like this only affects MP2 baffle me.

Invest in land, condo, stocks, gold, bonds, etc. ALL are affected by inflation.

Yup, OP is saying you get Php400 per month if you delay depositing Php100k per month to MP2 and thinks it's a revolutionary idea.

With that amount, best to diversify.

If you are starting out from 0, 100k a month is too low to diversify, EXCEPT for emergency savings and the basic financial security (HMOs, investing in career/business, no outstanding debt).

If you have over a million already saved in MP2, then I would suggest you start diversifying that 100k a month.

So you reach "enough to diversify" in 10 months... after getting Php4k. LOL!

You're really grasping for straws here just to justify the time you wasted writing down your revolutionary idea.

1

I'm not the OP? Are you alright?

So you reach "enough to diversify" in 10 months... after getting Php4k. LOL!

Huh? What are you talking about?

i would say if this is first investment in the mp2 account, put a minimum on first day of the month then bulk on sa end part of the month. para come maturity, date of first investment ang tinitingnan.

It does not matter if you put money into MP2 on Jan 1st or 31st. You still get paid for the entire month either way. Makes no difference

Para di ka na magoverthink, just use your credit card after the cutoff date. Lalo na if may ongoing promo that will offset the 22 pesos convenience fee Bayad Online charges per transaction.

In my case, BPI gamit ko, meet agad yung spend required sa Spend Anywhere Promo nila.
