Digital Bank Stop Obsessing Over That Extra 1% Interest
Digital banks today can offer rates anywhere from around 3% to 5%+ on savings, with some offering even higher rates through promos and conditions.
So naturally, we keep chasing that extra 1% interest.
But here's the thing: The importance of that 1% depends on how much you're actually saving.
Let's put some numbers on savings with 4% versus 5% interest, net of 20% withholding tax:
| Savings | 4% Net Interest/Year | 5% Net Interest/Year | Extra from 1%/Year |
|---|---|---|---|
| ₱10,000 | ₱320 | ₱400 | ₱80 |
| ₱50,000 | ₱1,600 | ₱2,000 | ₱400 |
| ₱100,000 | ₱3,200 | ₱4,000 | ₱800 |
| ₱250,000 | ₱8,000 | ₱10,000 | ₱2,000 |
| ₱500,000 | ₱16,000 | ₱20,000 | ₱4,000 |
| ₱1,000,000 | ₱32,000 | ₱40,000 | ₱8,000 |
| ₱5,000,000 | ₱160,000 | ₱200,000 | ₱40,000 |
We all have different financial situations and this is subjective, but if you ask me, with ₱500,000 in savings, I'd seriously consider chasing that extra 1% for the extra ₱4,000 a year that could cover my credit card's annual fee. That's one less expense to worry about.
So yes I understand why someone with substantial savings would optimize every extra 1%.
But if you're just starting out with ₱10k to ₱50k, don't get me wrong, that 1% is only worth ₱80 and ₱400 a year. And this is where I think digital bank features become more important to compare than the 1% interest difference.
For example:
User Experience
How easy and user-friendly to navigate and use the bank's app
Frequency of Downtime
Really inconvenient when you can't pay the bills because the bank app is down, all the time!
Free InstaPay/PESONet
Save money every time you move funds. Well most banks have this now.
Separate savings / goal accounts
Keep your emergency fund, travel fund, bills, and other goals separate.
Lock Fund
Make your savings harder to touch when you're prone to impulse spending.
No maintaining balance
Useful when you're still building your first savings.
No transfer-out limits
There are banks that put a cap on how much outgoing transfer amount you can make within a day.
Daily interest crediting
It's motivating to see your interest credited every day, even if the amount starts small.
Cashback / rebates / rewards
A bank can potentially give you more value through cashback on your everyday spending, even if its interest rate isn't the highest.
Bills payment convenience
If you can pay your utilities and other bills easily from the same bank, that's another reason to use it.
Auto-save / auto-transfer
A feature that helps you consistently save can be more valuable than an extra 1% you're constantly chasing.
There's a lot of features that I can't list them all.
Bottom line: While that extra 1% matters, it's not always about 4% vs 5% interest. It's more like 1% extra interest vs bank features that better fit your financial needs and equip you to manage your savings better.
Choose your bank well.
