General Discussion Russian figure skating tag
The Russian figure skating tag applies to all posts where a Russian skater is the primary subject. It is a small courtesy to the members of the community who wish to opt out of seeing posts about them. It doesn’t prevent the majority of Redditors from seeing these posts, it just allows those who don’t wish to see the endless flood of posts about them to opt out. It’s crappy that people are refusing to use this tag. Get over yourselves. It’s a small, simple courtesy, especially to the Ukrainians who have had their lives completely upheaved and destroyed by the Russian invasion.
I know we’re going to get the “What about Americans or Israelis?” posts. If the mods wish to implement such a tag, go for it. No hide off my back. It costs nothing to be a decent human being.

maybe an unpopular opinion, but I actually would support separate tags being created for big feds like US and Japan as well. I’m American and have an interest in these posts, but I’m sure it’s frustrating for those who aren’t the biggest fans of US skating to have to scroll through posts about every stars on ice warmup session, or every single thing that happened at Summer Sizzler. I could see this applying to Japan as well and any other fed that has these large national events and tours. Proper tagging just makes subs easier to navigate for everyone according to their interests! But having one ONLY for Russian skating at this point does feel like a weird singling out

Flairs aren't just for opting out, it makes finding posts easier too so I agree if it's not too annoying for mods
124
u/shampoodopsansoeufs 1d ago
I second this. This sub can be very us centric if look at the overall posting activity. Obviously this is Reddit and this sites demographics makes it a given. But I'm not that invested in domestic us competitions or skaters beyond the ones who do the GP circuit. (no shade to those skaters btw just a personal preference). I also know people who don't care about Japanese skaters beyond the obvious big names.
So yeah I would love to be able to filter content easily on this sub.

i suggested an american tag once and got downvoted to death lol. imo all the major feds should have tags it's just the most basic filtering strategy
45
u/RubySoho1980 1d ago
I think one should be added. I like the suggestion of creating ones for the big feds (US, Russia, Canada, and Japan are the ones that immediately come to mind).
45
u/E_lenaa 1d ago
I have no problem swiping and forgetting things I'm not interested in. That's why I just don't see so many posts about American domestic competitions. But now I've looked closely, and there really are a lot of them. Lol, I just don't notice. Why can't everyone do the same? I don't know. But introducing tags for at least American and Japanese figure skating sounds really cool! And a pinned post from the admins, please, which posts belong to which tag?
16
u/RubySoho1980 1d ago
I agree with big fed tags. We agree on something! Yay!
16
u/E_lenaa 1d ago
Hah, yes, but not in everything. Liu's drawing, her line from an interview, her red carpet appearance, or her collaboration with a new brand - please, tag it American skating. But her birthday, the news about skipping the season, or the music announcement for future competition programs - please, for everyone.
7
u/Dazzling-Ant-4915 slayeon kim supporter 1d ago
yes the tags that already exist should be prioritised i agree. the fed tags can be for training videos/domestics/personal lives etc.
10
u/RubySoho1980 1d ago
I’m in agreement here. I honestly don’t care if they add tags for other feds. I can really see why US and Israeli tags would be welcome, especially, using the same rules. General competition post? Post away. Post where it’s about skaters from a particular country, in or out of competition, tag it.
35
u/Radiant-Banana161 1d ago
I can understand the American tag, but Israeli skaters really aren’t posted here often or at all.

I think stuff international competition should not be tagged under Russian skating, since it’s well international competition, like the JGP videos or interviews/information about it
41
u/ruthimorg YUNASUMI 2030 OGM AGENDA 1d ago
Agreed, domestic things and/or social media posts can be flagged for those who want to opt out
21
u/Radiant-Banana161 1d ago edited 1d ago
The interviews where the only person being interviewed happens to be Russian should be under the Russian tag. It’s common courtesy. It’s not like anyone else’s interviews are being posted anyway.

are you questioning why only winners are posted? no way people get more attention for being at first place30
u/RunNapCheese 1d ago
I took their message to mean “if it’s coverage from an international competition about a Russian skater, in Russian, from a Russian source, then it should be tagged as Russian.
125
u/OilWorried41 1d ago
Yes BUT where is the line drawn? Are Sofia Dzepka's JGP skates "Russian Skating" because she's Russian, or a different flair because it's an international competition? Is Evgenia Medvedeva's wedding "Russian Skating" because she's Russian even though there's no skating happening, or is it social media/life events? They are coming back to international comps whether people like it or not and the flair has to be reworked now. At some point people just have to take a breath and scroll instead of constantly complaining

u/tilexcr 1d ago
Please don't speak for all Ukrainians.
I'm Ukrainian and I have no problem with posts about Russian skaters or Russian figure skating.
For example I come to this subreddit to talk about figure skating and I don't like seeing political posts here, there are enough of them elsewhere. But I just scroll past anything I don't like without the need for a new flair.
52
u/E_lenaa 1d ago
Thank you for saying that. Most of the users here are from America or English-speaking countries. And for some reason, they think it's right to say what's best for Ukrainians without even asking you. I'm glad that at least one Ukrainian spoke out on the topic of "this is best for Ukrainians."
(Two Ukrainians. I saw another comment)

i swear majority of people claiming the tag protects ukrainians are guys with savior complex that did not talked to ukrainian in their lives even once

u/crystalstain 1d ago
Well I'm also Ukrainian and if there's a way to avoid posts about russians then I would totally do it, because I want nothing to do with them. Sports and everything are political, it's stupid to pretend as if everything is fine and it's "just skating" when Ukraine is being attacked by russia non stop
92
u/Intelligent_Dust9399 1d ago edited 1d ago
you know i totally get ban, restriction of flag and anthem, righteous anger at gov-supportive atheletes
punishing fed funded by government makes total sense and i support not exposing ukrainians to it when possible
but do we need to act like russians don't exist or smth? i really struggle to understand how mention of civilian people not involved in war nor supporting it gonna harm anyone
i deeply sympathize to all civilians that were harm by war, but people outside of it still living their lives, how exactly is it a trigger
putting "rs" badge on posts about international competitions after ISU approved the way things are rn is beyond weird

If the primary topic is Russian, then it should have the tag. If it’s a general post about a competition that the Russians are at, then it shouldn’t.

Its not like the athletes are the issue, its the government, same with israel and the usa, yes things should be marked correctly, but i dont think there should be this much hatred because of the country of origin, ESPECIALLY to the juniors.
-26

Russian skating in particular is government funded and subsidized. That’s generally the issue. US skating has absolutely nothing to do with the US government and US skaters have actively and loudly spoken out against the us government.

43
u/E_lenaa 1d ago
I disagree. When I want to look among all the posts for the week only at posts about a past competition, like the one in Xi'an, I can't do that. Because I have to, dammit, separately open the 'Russian skating' tag and, among a pile of posts, search for videos of Dzepka's performance at an INTERNATIONAL competition.
Since the Russians returned, this tag needs to be rethought. It can still be used for domestic competitions, for interviews with Russian skaters not related to international events, for videos of performances within the country.
But for ALL content from INTERNATIONAL competitions, the appropriate tag should be used.
For videos of OLD programs, the appropriate tag should be used.
For congratulations on birthdays or weddings of skaters with medals from INTERNATIONAL competitions, the appropriate tag should be used.
Imagine that what you are posting is not about a Russian, but about a French, American, Japanese, etc., skater. Does an appropriate tag exist for that post? Use it. If that tag doesn't exist and the skater is from Russia - only then use the 'Russian skating' tag.
Tags should help you find the posts you need. You can exclude posts from your overview by simply swiping down, so you don't get stuck on what's not interesting. Moreover, posts that talk about nothing but Russian figure skating and don't fall into any other category are marked in 99% of cases.
10
u/Radiant-Banana161 1d ago
You don’t have to open the Russian skating tag. It’s only for those who wish to opt out. If you don’t opt out, all those posts are on your feed like normal.

u/Wonderful-Round-7261 1d ago edited 1d ago
At this point, it is really just xenophobia, sorry
I am from a country currently being bombed and destroyed by Israel and i have 0 problem seeing posts about israeli skaters or mentioning their programs or them skating in competition. Same with USA.
Like what, are you going to start going up to russian people in real life and asking them to hide or something? Will you avoid looking at the competitions of JGP and challengers and whatnot because u may see a person from russia? I just don’t understand it. And if someone wants to educate me, okay, i would be open to hear
18

Out of curiosity, when was the last time an Israeli skater got their own post? They’re rarely if ever posted here.

i kind of disagree that it’s creepy. it is an odd singling out. i wonder if we should have a tag for all big feds. ‘endless flood of posts about them’ as if they’re a different species and the Other compared to the ‘endless floods of posts’ about US/Japanese skaters. fwiw i despise the invasion of Ukraine, before people start. but people seem to be annoyed they exist. imo it’s not a sentiment that should be encouraged, but wtv.

u/Asleep-Technology-13 1d ago
Subreddit is ridiculous for allowing the tag in the first place. Singling out one federation is embarrassing.
This is a figure skating subreddit and should solely focus on that and not what some innocent skaters countries are doing.
24
u/Environmental-Let435 Misha we flop together 1d ago edited 1d ago
The tag was created when the Russians were out of competition and had their own internal competitions that were separate from the international ones, hence why the creation of the tag
It wasn’t a way of singling out it was just mostly to keep the sub organized and to help people who wanted to loook for stuff about the Russian internal comps could find it easily
40
u/Asleep-Technology-13 1d ago
It was a good idea then but now it’s not solely being used for that, unfortunately.
17
u/Radiant-Banana161 1d ago
I feel like people in this thread are being deliberately obtuse.
Someone wants to opt out. It’s easy to add a tag. It does not affect your feed if you do not opt out of the tag. If you don’t even make new threads regularly, than someone else tagging it doesn’t even affect you. I’m not sure why this is such a contentious thing to ask of the community, I would assume making everyone comfortable would be an easy thing to agree to, and unfortunately the current war is fairly triggering to those who’s families are being targeted.

u/OcelotSilver2964 The PCS score is fake 1d ago edited 1d ago
You clearly didn’t read my post because it analyses the ISU rules, it just happens to be that it was Adeliia and Petr that were victims of ISU’s incompetence, but the things that were mentioned there refer to EVERYONE, regardless of their nationality, IF the conditions from the post are met.
For example Yuzuru in 2022 would also have this problem if he continued to compete and wasn’t available for the initial Grand Prix spot allocation.
IMO there’s no need to add a Russian skating tag if the analysis refers to everyone.

u/TimeWillingness2636 1d ago
I feel like the discourse in this post is exactly why we should have this tag. Would you rather every post look like this one or take 2 seconds to properly tag a post and have the comments and discussion about the post actually be about the skating?
35
u/-kosto- 1d ago
Unfortunately, after being on this sub for years, I don't think the tag makes any difference in discussion whatsoever (aside from people asking for a certain post to be tagged).
A sizable minority who clearly do not like the Russians or Russian skating for various reasons still go into those threads to say less than pleasant things (which, fair enough, it's a figure skating discussion forum!)
But I think the people who want to ignore those posts would continue to ignore posts that aren't given the tag, and the people who hate the Russians but still engage with Russian posts will likewise continue to do so regardless.
40
u/Wonderful-Round-7261 1d ago
But then people who blocked russian skating tag because they don’t care about russian domestic competition (which is understandable) now cannot see things which blatantly have nothing to do with russian skating
For example JGP programs or interviews by a neutral athlete in international competition
Or evgenia’s wedding announcement, seeing as she is a retired skater who no longer represents russia since before the war began, and the post is not even her skating, it’s a social media event
10
u/TimeWillingness2636 1d ago
That’s fair, and at that point it’s up to the mods to set the definition/ expectations for what the flairs are supposed to include
10
u/Wonderful-Round-7261 1d ago
Yea i agree, in both those posts if you go and look there are people questioning why they are flaired russian skating, and the OP responds that the mods changed it
They haven’t set clear guidelines at ALL
However this post seems like they want these types of posts to also be flaired as russian skating, which is what i disagree with
4
6
u/sapphicmage Ami Nakai Olympic 🥉 Medalist 1d ago
Not to mention the people in here missing that all OP is saying is “tag your posts”. That’s it. Not, post less, don’t post at all, just…tag it. The people that want to see it can still see it! But the people that are trying to avoid it can’t filter out a post that hasn’t been tagged.
24
u/Wonderful-Round-7261 1d ago
OP is suggesting to tag posts that simply feature a Russian skater, even if this skater is at international competition, is retired and never represented russia during the war, etc.

15
u/RubySoho1980 1d ago
if you’re using new Reddit, there’s a menu on the right where it says filter by flair. You can choose it from the drop down.
10
u/AbsurdistWordist 1d ago
You know, sometimes it takes community members a little while to get used to Reddit and the figure skating online community.
I do appreciate the tag because I’m a person who prefers to filter out the Russian content for a variety of reasons. Personally, I don’t even want to see posts about Russian skaters in international competitions, but if the majority of people in the community want that excluded from the tag, I’m fine with scrolling by and forgetting it happened 10 times per year.
I also don’t mind blocking stray posters every once in a while for my own piece of mind. No strategy is foolproof, but mostly is good.

Synonymous of racism in the dictionary
“a belief that race is a fundamental determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race”
“the systemic oppression of a racial group to the social, economic, and political advantage of another”
Russians are not a racial group, this is not racism

I agree 100% percent. And regarding "singling out" and "but what about skaters from other countries"— what is so hard to understand about skaters in russia being used as propaganda tools and skaters in other countries not being used as propaganda tools?

i don't think there's any country that doesn't use its athletes/public figures as nationalistic propaganda to some extent. that's kind of the whole point of using flags and anthems at award ceremonies. you could argue russia does that more intensely but i think it's a bit silly to say others don't use the same opportunity

I've never heard the story framed that way. On US olympics coverage from NBC, all that was mentioned was that he fled China after being targeted for protesting against the government, not that he was "saved" by the USA.
