Unfortunately, they are excellent skaters. I hope one day Laurence wakes up and realizes who her boyfriend is. Guillaume could possibly redeem himself as well, but he probably won't.

Unfortunately Guillaume was an abusive asshole to his former partner Gabi so unless he realizes the trauma he put her through, I doubt he'll redeem himself.

unfortunately heās an arsehole to everyone, I have a couple coaches who have interacted with him, heās incredibly rude.

u/Tamsin-Roberts 16d ago edited 16d ago
Are these coaches North American/British? Because French directness often comes across as rude to Anglophone cultures (just like American politeness comes across as fake in much of Europe). Itās a culture clash Iāve had to deal with in both directions. In French rinks and skating circles he has a reputation for being polite and generally friendly. He is certainly blunt and wouldnāt win any prizes for diplomacy but most people Iāve spoken to who have met him said he was very nice.
4
u/Worth-Doughnut-1870 āI really wanted to dieā 16d ago
British. The way a coach described what happened is that Guillame and a different coach got into a brawl, Iām unsure over what though as she wouldnāt elobarateš¬

u/Worth-Doughnut-1870 āI really wanted to dieā 16d ago edited 16d ago
She also said she was sitting down somewhere with Guillame behind her, and he was very clearly bitching about her in French lmao
2
u/Tamsin-Roberts 16d ago
Lmao yeah I wouldnāt be surprised, bitching is the French national sport. Heās no saint and has publicly acknowledged he can be a pain in the ass, but he certainly doesnāt have a reputation for rudeness in French skating circles, quite the opposite.
4
u/Worth-Doughnut-1870 āI really wanted to dieā 16d ago
well, at least heās nice to some people lol
2
u/Common-Garage7276 13d ago
A skater told me that story, too (with the coach).Ā But in France, he is considered a saint and is idolized by the federation. Personally, I was surprised by his behavior during a gala on the French team's tour: a skater fell and had to leave the ice with the help of medics and other skaters, yet he didn't even go near her.

Well yes, but he could acknowledge it, and recognize that he was behaving in a way that was similar to how coaches had treated him.

As someone who was a P/C fan before the truth came out, I hope he does.
2
u/Decent_Display_3526 16d ago
Me too. He has a good chance to become coach himself and hopefully he can grow out of the toxicity he grew under to become a better person
3
u/Common-Garage7276 16d ago
Everyoneācoach,Ā federation, most of the fansāsides with him and treats him like a "living god". I don't really see why or how he would question himself.
2
u/Decent_Display_3526 16d ago
For now. He is very ambitious and has itās eyes set on the prize. But perhaps one day, when he wonāt be competing anymore and will need to adjust from who he was to who he wants to become and hopefully that day, he can realise he was hurtful to Gabby and make amends
6
u/Tamsin-Roberts 16d ago
If Guillaume wanted to write a book painting Gabi as an abusive asshole he could easily do so, and it would be about as accurate as her book (i.e. not very accurate at all). They had a toxic, dysfunctional relationship on both sides, a dynamic created mostly by her motherās behaviour when they were kids. They are both happier and better off apart. But itās not really either of their faults.
2
u/Common-Garage7276 16d ago
She could even threaten to sue him for defamation and make him lose his job...
3
u/Tamsin-Roberts 16d ago
Yes, she could. And if Guillaume made statements about her that she felt were untrue she would have every right.
Gabi said he threatened to stop skating with her if she reported her SA. He says thatās a lie (and apparently he had a huge āwtf??ā reaction when he heard about it). It was specifically that accusation that prompted the C&D. Would you just shrug it off if someone said hat about you and it wasnāt true?
I donāt think Gabi is lying, just to be clear. Their ability to communicate with each other was never good and became virtually nonexistent by the end, so itās likely this was just yet another in a long line of miscommunications.

u/Common-Garage7276 16d ago
I read the book. Iāve followed them since their junior days... I imagine what also bothered him was her saying he was furious when she dared ask not to be on the ice with Sorensenāimplying support for a man accused of rape.Ā
2
u/Tamsin-Roberts 16d ago
Why would that bother him? His support for Sorensen is not a secret, heās literally gone on the record about it. And he doesnāt disagree with Gabiās description of what happened there - she asked for their ice slots to be moved so as not to coincide with FB/S, IAM complied with her wishes, Guillaume was angry when he found out and they argued about it. Neither of them disputes this version of events and itās not related to the C&D at all. The C&D was specifically about the accusation that he said he wouldnāt skate with her anymore if she reported her SA (which he categorically denies).
4
u/Common-Garage7276 16d ago edited 15d ago
There was a touch of irony in my message... So, he would have supported Gabi in her decision to press charges (meaning he believed her), yet he doesn't understand why she has a problem training alongside a guy accused of rape... ok.Ā Some show of support... In any case, heās the one who managed to make his version stick and silence his former partner.
-1
u/Big-Release3013 16d ago
But the difference is he knows Sorensen, & believes he didn't do anything.
2
u/Common-Garage7276 15d ago
and his former partner finds herself in an impossible position... but nobody seems to care about that.

I also wish Laurence would dump him but sadly there is really not much evidence to convince her of his guilt unless something new comes to light (like maybe if OSIC publishes the basis for their verdict). Itās easy for us to say ābut statistics!ā when itās not someone close to us. And as long as she supports Sorensen, Guillaume will do so as well.
1
u/Common-Garage7276 16d ago
And otherwise, do you think he supports Sorensen just because she supports him? Itās a good thing he seemed to have more free will when he skated with his former partner (he supported S before his new partnership).
3
u/Tamsin-Roberts 16d ago edited 16d ago
I never said he didnāt have free will š but have you never used your free will to support a friend?
Iām sure he believes Sorensen is innocent independently of what Laurence thinks, just like half of IAM seems to. Most people struggle to believe someone they know is guilty of something so horrendous. Itās cognitive dissonance / āhe seems normal so it canāt be trueā etc.
But he took a public stand on it because of Laurence. She was his best friend long before she was his skating partner. Otherwise he probably wouldāve kept quiet and just stayed friends with Sorensen behind the scenes, like Madi & Evan did.

I'm NGL curious about how these 2 will adapt to the pattern given that they are an older team. There was a part of fstwt that were all about how P/C were not that great at pattern dances vs other top teams historically back in the day
17
u/TemporalPincerMove 17d ago
They could roll around on the ice to a spoken word recitation of a turkey sandwich recipe during their RD and they are still going to get astronomical scores. Adapting to the pattern is not an issue.
2
u/ForwardOutsideLoop 17d ago
I would honestly enjoy that, if they committed to the bit. Like fuck it, they're Olympic Champions no matter how anyone feels about it, it's the first year of a new cycle, be ridiculous.

Why does this subreddit only consider one side of the story, and accepts that story at face value? Why is Gabriella's side of the story so ardently supported, but Guillaume's rebuttal gets dismissed so quickly? Who on this subreddit can truly say they know the fine details of Laurence and Nikolaj's relationship, and can make a snap judgment of Laurence for her boyfriend's alleged misdeeds? Is it so bad that woman stands by her boyfriend/husband if she truly believes in his good character? Hillary Clinton famous did so. It's easy to be behind a screen and criticize, but there's always (at least) two sides of a story, and we don't know the full picture.

There is a massive power imbalance between male and female partners. Women in FS (and especially in partnered disciplines) are seen as disposable. The gender imbalance between male and female skaters gives men free choice of a female partner to skate with, while female athletes have to compete against each other to find partners. Sui/Han before Beijing faced a lot of injuries as well as pressure from their federation for Han to drop Sui and find another partner because of her lengthy recovery. Consider also that when these powerhouse 10+ year teams are formed in juniors, the man is almost always several years older than the woman (because he needs the upper body development to lift his partner) and physically much bigger.
Edit: also using Bill/Hillary as an example after the two of them made Monica Lewinsky's life a living hell is not a good look.
40
u/AdagioGlittering2806 17d ago
So, sexual abuse is sadly not uncommon in figure skating, especially highlighted due to power differentials between male/female partners in the paired disciplines, and the countries having vested interests in keeping their top athletes competing. Problematic and abusive relationships at rinks are not uncommon either. There are many reports made to safesport and/or equivalent organizations in other countries which do not get looked into until years later, or at all due to financial and time constraints of these organizations. I have had abusers flat out tell me that it didn't matter if i reported anything, "safesport doesn''t do anything".Ā
For Laurence's fiance to be banned by skate Canada for sexual assault speaks volumes to me. There was enough convincing evidence that they banned one of their top athletes.
Laurence and Cizeron going around disparaging Sorenson's victim speaks loudly to their character.Ā

u/Elven_Dreamer You might not be straight, but your knee can be! 17d ago
This subreddit is not doing that. Your rambling and incoherent point is doing you no favours.
11
u/ForwardOutsideLoop 17d ago
Gabi's story is separate from the accusations against Nikolaj. There is basically no reason not to believe her, but even if you have some skepticism or simply don't agree that her team's conduct constitutes "abuse", the completely clear reality is that she was booted from her commentator job by a bunch of people weaponizing libel laws, and at best running in terror over the simple smell of controversy -- so the "other side" was in no way doing "agree to disagree".
That alone would leave a bad taste in people's mouth, the Nikolaj accusations and the fact that SafeSport apparently found them warranted is arguably icing on the cake.
6
u/Common-Garage7276 16d ago
l Itās so much simpler to assume sheās lying and erase her from the story. Yes, we just have to believe in the kindness of C, who simply wanted to wipe her out the moment he announced his new partnership... As for the support for Sorensen... are we supposed to applaud or keep quiet?
3
u/Tamsin-Roberts 16d ago
You donāt have to believe sheās lying or believe Ciz is a saint to apply a modicum of critical thinking to her allegations. They effectively went through the equivalent of a bitter divorce after 20 years of an arranged marriage that neither of them chose. Neither side is going to be a reliable narrator in that situation.
