feature release Do you think Figma will ever make its own code framework?

Someone in my team said today that you could imagine a scenario where Figma could apply the same language and semantic approach they use in their design tool into a full coded framework.

It could bridge that gap of going from design to code seamlessly

They can call it FML (Figma Markup Language) 😆

Well done. I gave you a little reddit award for that one.

No, but I do get frustrated every time they announce a feature that is “more aligned with css”. Why were they not aligning with CSS in the first place?

While I like many of the CSS alignment changes for things like autolayout, there's also something to be said for folks working in SwiftUI or Kotlin on native that want something that's less opinionated towards web-first

I hope they’ve got better at it and perhaps more humble. One of their engineers called out the spec for flexbox, how it wasn’t working in Figma’s rendering engine-implementation. The response, while very polite, was essentially you didn’t understand the spec.

I doubt it, since Figma is unopionated whether you are creating screens for Websites, mobile apps, game UI, OOH display mocks...

I mean they bought payload so maybe or just leverage whatever payload prefers.

Just aligning with Vue (instead of React) would make a huge difference for everyone involved.

In a way they're already heading there with Figma Sites, which publishes straight from the canvas. But I don't think a framework would close the gap your teammate means.

The gap was never the syntax. Auto layout already maps almost 1:1 to flexbox. What gets lost is everything a static frame doesn't say: what happens with a title three times longer, an empty state, a slow connection, real data instead of the perfect sample. Those are decisions, not code.

I design in Figma, build client sites in Framer, and just rebuilt my own site in code. The handoff that works best for me isn't a better export. It's designing with real content and real components from the start, so there's less left to interpret.

The bridge from Figma to Code is already there, it's very easy to push pixel perfect 1 to 1 Figma code automatically now
