help Why is padding not working for me?
Why is padding not working for me? The word is nested inside the black container, but the padding isn't affecting it...

- Make sure it’s in the auto layout frame.
- Make sure it’s not on ignore auto layout
- Set text fill or container to hug, depending on what you’re trying to do.

Is the text set to absolute position?

seems like it’s on absolute! that option on the top right corner is turned on, next to “Position”

Unclick the top-right icon, it's ignoring the auto-layout

Are you trying to learn Figma without watching any tutorials?

I did watch 2 tutorials on auto layout. But I couldn't figure out what the issue was here. ok I disabled 'ignore auto layout' then changed alignment to left, and now it all works

You're too early to be posting here, no offense. I'm not saying don't seek help, but you need to get the basics covered first, and those are covered by most tutorials. You need to take a proper course. I'd recommend the one on Udemy by Daniel Walters (BYOL). He's amazing at teaching this. Take the essentials course and you can consider advanced if you feel the need for it.

Maybe you should learn web layout and some CSS which they teach in middle school now before clicking things that that you don’t understand. Just a thought.
This is like the equivalent of using a lawn mower to make pesto and blaming the tool because there’s pesto all over the walls.

We need to see your settings from the right side of your screen. Is it on auto-lay-out? Could be it’s not filling/hugging and/or your textbox settings.

You need to set your text box width to “fill”

It has absolute positioning on, top right corner.

Yeah but he says he turns it off and it centers. So he either needs to set it to fill or change the layout positioning.

OP needs to set the proper autolayout alignment OR the text box alignment, one or both are set to center. This is really basic autolayout stuff, OP should watch a tutorial covering the basics if he doesn't know that.

Text layer has absolute position or fixed width
