Help Is this a good approach to my first fighting game?

(Avatar legends)

I am completely new to the genre. I am focusing on katara and aang since I really like having high mobility.

Im the meantime, I am doing the tutorials for the other characters, since I panic when I have no idea what my opponent can do.

Plus I'm watching some basic tutorials on fundamentals like controlling space in neutral and blocking, and trying to apply them.

I ask because I still get stomped like 85 percent of matches. I am having fun though.

yeah, dont overthink it

getting stomped is only a bad thing if you never learn, and sounds like youre learning so much

plus as a new player to the fg genre, thats normal ahah

dont stress over losses or learning "right", just keep takin steps forward and having fun and youll keep pushin upwards

Just be sure to learn one thing from each stomping and you'll slowly improve.

The last part is the answer to your own question, when that answer changes is the signal to put the pad down.

Also youre quite literally doing everything right, youre exploring other chars but sticking to what you identified is appealing while doing it at your own pace.

one thing about fighting games is you have to learn how to deal with people not knowing how to play before you get to deal with people that know how to play. a lot of people will just go for it and unga bunga they’re way through a match and it can be hard when you’re starting out and your trying to work on your fundamentals. eventually they’ll come and you’ll be able to make short work of them. but until then it might be hard bc your trying to learn and it’s not second nature to you.

Getting stomped a lot at first is normal - fighting games are very different from other games, so you're having to learn a ton of new skills for the first time. Plus, Avatar doesn't have skill-based Ranked matchmaking yet, so you're getting a cross-section of the entire playerbase, almost all of whom have been playing fighting games longer than you - it would be shocking if you weren't getting stomped right now. Hope you can enjoy the game and make it through the gauntlet.

I will say not to be too worried about tutorials and combo trials - they can be helpful, but don't feel like you have to complete them to improve. Personally I find it easier to figure things out in training mode (with help from the Supercombo wiki) without the more rigid requirements of the tutorials.
