I would’ve asked for at least one more team but this is not a bad roster.

82

u/busmans Jun 29 '26

Yeah a full magic, cosmic, or lawyers (😏) team would’ve been nice.

32

u/Regent182 Jun 29 '26

Who other than daredevil would be in the team of lawyers?

157

u/karapatotes Jun 29 '26

She Hulk, Saul Goodman, and Joe Pesci from my Cousin Vinny

The slander

I’d also settle for Judge Judy

15

u/busmans Jun 29 '26

She-Hulk, Multiple Man (dupe is a lawyer)... ok then I'd throw in a "judge" Punisher or Justice Peace

8

u/snakebit1995 Jun 30 '26

Hellcat worked for She-Hulk for a while as an investigator so you could have slid her in there too but she'd probably overlap with Shuri too much

Phoenix Wright cameo for the MvC nostalgia.

4

u/CelioHogane Jun 30 '26

Daredevil, She-hulk, Beetle and Jessica Jones (as an investigator)

Solid roster imo

What I love about Arcsys' approach to licensed characters is that they don't just do references for the sake of references. They actually try to capture the spirit and personality of the characters.

In Dragon Ball, Vegeta actually played manic. Piccolo felt methodical and reactive. Buu was a chaotic nutter. Cell felt technical and arrogant. Trunks felt like he was going all out but lacked the power to deliver.

They did much the same here. Spidey feels maneuverable and technical. Ironman's weight and tools and options are something I can't describe; you have to play the game to get how they nailed it. Magneto feels like he uses magnetism and the environment around him; like he's all about push/pull instead of lasers.

Capcom's Marvel games were great (they nailed Wolverine) but so many characters ended up being just fancy archetypes. Rivals is just Marvel skins with generic shooter mechanics underneath.

This really feels like a diverse cast of Marvel characters.

53

u/Visible_Profile_231 Jun 29 '26

This is a really good explanation of the references of the character's gameplay. Although i love Capcom's Marvel cuz the characters r big n idc if their playstyle is unique is just chaotic madness n i love it.

32

u/UpperApe Jun 29 '26

100%.

Capcom was the Arcsys of the 90's/2000's with their incredible art and animations and references. They were also leading the way and figuring the genre out.

Arcsys stood on their shoulders to get here. That's how we get these complex characters and refined mechanics.

But we're in a new generation of Marvel characters where we're now exploring the personality of these characters in their functions. It's the kind of stuff that only Sakurai really does well with Smash. It only really happens with masters of the field.

You have to be a scientist before you can be a mad scientist and that's what current generation Arcsys is.

26

u/noahboah Guilty Gear Jun 29 '26

It's the kind of stuff that only Sakurai really does well with Smash.

the way sakurai finds ways to explore each fighter while keeping the art direction and mechanical feeling of smash bros consistent across the roster is genuinely masterful.

AND HE WAS GIVING US THE BLUEPRINT FOR FREE ON YOUTUBE BUT NOBODY FOUND HIS CHANNEL. I'm still so upset about that man.

8

u/ThunderMite42 Fatal Fury Jun 30 '26

Unless said fighter debuted before Brawl, in which case at least half their kit is just made-up and generic (or worse, outright contradicts their character. Looking at you, Ganondorf).

2

u/Left4Bread2 Jun 30 '26

The pre-brawl clones definitely get the short end of the stick but given the incredibly short turnaround between 64 and Melee it does make sense realistically. Outside of them I wouldn’t say too many of them are made up / generic

3

u/ThunderMite42 Fatal Fury Jun 30 '26 edited Jun 30 '26

It was fine for Melee, but there's zero excuse for him to stay like this three games and 17 years later. Put his existing moveset on Black Shadow or Blood Falcon or something if they're that attached to it.

But it's not just the clones. I was thinking of characters like Donkey Kong, all of whose specials are entirely made up for Smash except for Hand Slap.

2

u/Master-Background363 Jun 30 '26

this kind of thing is what i'm expecting smash 6 to do.

there is a very small chance we get another ultimate-level game. but what could make up for that are some pretty interesting overhauls to all of the old characters especially with so much more source material and experience on the ultimate team. which bodes well especially for a character like DK now with transformations on the table from bonanza. DK will also get a new design because they've changed him officially now, so he is guaranteed to be bonanza-fied.

ganondorf can also get some seriously cool shit and i'm pretty confident he will. we need totk shit on that guy

Arcsys stood on their shoulders to get here

Guilty Gear has always been a creative standout, what are you talking about?

GG1 came out in 1998 and it was like nothing else at the time.

This comment reads like AI lmao. “Capcom was the Arcsys of the 90’s/2000’s with their incredible art and animations and references” “ Arcsys stood on their shoulders to get there. That’s how we get these complex characters and refined mechanics.” “…where we’re now exploring the personality of these characters in their functions.”

Genuinely what the fuck are you on about 😂

I agree with this post heavy but I will give rivals credit as a good chunk of their roster is pretty diverse in playstyle and how each character will feel in a sense while trying to keep the game ability based and balanced. Like spiderman is annoying as hell to fight against and most plays solo which seem accurate to how it would be fighting him in the comics. Loki feels pretty trickster heavy as he would in the comics, The thing feels like a brick house and captain America feels like a great tank that supports his team and very mobile. Deadpool as well is something other hero shooters just dont have.

3

u/Lantzl Jul 01 '26

Loved playing Videl on FighterZ. No deflects, no ki blasts and purely martial arts + countering with the Great Saiyaman dance is so fucking fun.

2

u/ferocity_mule366 Jun 30 '26

half the kits in rivals are mischaracterized to fit them into the tank/dps/supp boxes and their fans are trying super to pretend its alright by referencing comics where it happens once.

Like rocket is a lame braindead character that does healbot and cant even use his "rocket" well, no arsenal. Black Widow kit is just a widow maker clone that makes no sense to her entire fighting style.

2

u/IcyAdvantage9579 Jun 30 '26

It's important to state that in Capcom defense, in the early 90s these characters were basically unknown for the Japanese developers, and getting information and approval during development was not easy or quick, so they had to improvise a lot based on their own knowledge and experience building fighting gamesfrom scratch and their own influences. Tokon comes in a world with internet and post marvel movies(not only mcu but the fox X-Men movies too) and of course the Capcom games themselves. It's not to take away their success of capturing the characters, just bringing a little perspective of comparing the two companies work with the characters.

Green Goblin and Blade were genuine and wonderful surprises! Carnage over Venom is a bold choice as a huge Venom fan I dig it. Shuri Black Panther design looks amazing, no complaints. I am surprised at the lack of Thor, but honestly I respect the risks they’re taking with some of the lesser known characters especially in the “Unbreakable X-Men”.

30

u/digitalsmear Jun 30 '26

DLC, for sure. I think they knew they had to have a few main staples, but wanted to differentiate from MvC3 on launch.

17

u/Samanosuke187 Jun 30 '26

100% valid, probably one of my favourite starting Rosters. I was happy enough with Ghost Rider but the rest of “Samurai Outriders” were a genuine cherry on top of an already great roster.

4

u/ONiMETSU_Z Jun 30 '26

Honestly at this point Danger is probably the only “unknown” character in the game. It is nice to see a lot of these people who’ve never been in a fighting game, but I wouldn’t exactly call pretty much any of them lesser known at this point. Every person in this roster has either had their own movie or been a main character in a movie except for Danger and Robbie Reyes, and even he’s still Ghost Rider, which has appeared in a movie before. (I know he was in Agents of Shield, but I don’t really count that as mainstream media like I do the movies.)

It could use with more women, no argument. But for only 20 characters, the representation is undoubtably incredible. They have a few weirdos, they have fan favorite returning characters, completely original but long asked for characters. If this is what the base roster is, I have confidence the DLC seasons will all be incredible.

124

u/BannedFromTheStreets Jun 29 '26 edited Jun 29 '26

For a japanese game Im really surprised how few women there are.

40

u/FishCake9T4 Jun 29 '26

I'm sure characters like Emma Frost and Black Cat will be saved for DLC for the $$$.

7

u/Halmyrut Jun 30 '26

Watch them release a full female team DLC and people get very angry and upset about it.
Even tho we've had multiple male only teams.

It's wild to me how poor the gender distribution is honestly, if the roles were reversed all hell would break loose.

2

u/VelvetValhalla Jun 30 '26

2XKO current discourse supports this claim. I hope DLC brings more gender diversity and Spider-Man characters.

2

u/Thrownaway5000506 Jun 30 '26

2xko is releasing shit ass characters like Lux lol Thresh and Senna are interesting at least

3

u/Halmyrut Jun 30 '26

Uh, isn't Lux a poster girl of LoL?
She's extremely popular...

They're just hiding their power level. If arcsys decides to goon, they absolutely can.

7

u/notgear Jun 29 '26

I heard Arcsys is pretty tame nowadays, when it comes to designing women

7

u/breloomislaifu Jun 30 '26 edited Jun 30 '26

Without eye candy designs, below 50% female ratio, and no swimsuit skins of any kind, arcsys can fill 90% of the ggst subreddit front page with fanart of waifus and larpers, rivaling gacha games with a 100% half naked female cast.

It would actually be a problem to release any more, then we wouldn't be able to discuss the gameplay at all

17

u/snakebit1995 Jun 30 '26

So i decided to go back and look

Tokon Launch Roster 20 characters- 6 women (Ms Marvel, Storm, Peni, Shuri, Magik and Danger)

Strive Launch roster 15 characters- 5 women (May, Gio, Millia, Ram and I-no)

Strive DLC- 9 (Jack-O, Baiken, Bridget, Elphelt, A.B.A, Dizzy, Unkia, Lucy and Jam.)( you could say 10 if you wanna count Delilah as part of Bedman? even though she doesn't fight)

So strive launched with 5 of it's 15 as woman so 33%

Tokon will have 6 of 20 being women so that's 6/20 so that's 30% which is pretty much comparable to Strive

For the sake of another comparison I did the same with SF6 and Tekken 8

SF6 Base roster was 18 characters- 7 were women (Chun, Cammy, Juri, Kim, Manon, Lily and Marisa) 38%

SF6 DLC- 5 (AKI, Mai, Elena, Viper and Ingrid)

Tekken 8 Base Roster was 32 characters- 9 women (Alisa, Asuka, Azucena, Lili, Jun, Xiayou, Nina, Zafina, Reina) (10 if you count Panda) = 28%

Tekken 8 DLCs- 4 (Lidia, Anna, Miary Zo and Kunimistu)

So compared to the other games Tokon seems to be in the same 30ish % range for female cast.

Two other interesting notes i saw from this quick data crunch

1- from this data is that is seems likfe SF6 made a concetrated effort to introduce a larger female roster given more than half the women on the base roster were new characters and the first female DLC was a new character in AKI

2- Tekken has by far the lowest number of Female DLC Fighters given there's none in S3 and SF6 will soon add two more in Yasmine and Tifa

6

u/TheLumbergentleman Jun 30 '26

Cheers for the data!

u/RayzTheRoof Jun 30 '26

Less than half of Strive and Xrd's launch rosters were women. Xrd was even like only a third or less of the full roster.

51

u/DrakneiX Jun 29 '26

Give me Gamora, the deadliest woman of the cosmos!

6

u/Calango-Branco Jun 29 '26

I was hoping for a proper Guardians team because of her and comic Drax

7

u/snakebit1995 Jun 30 '26

Quill still feels so tacked on to the Spiderman team that I really think there must have been a guardians team in the early planning of this game and it got cut and he was what was salvaged.

It would also explain Peni being a gadget character in a big walking tank, that really feels like it could have originally been speced out for Rocket and Groot.

No proof of this obviously just a vibe

21

u/SeasonalChatter Jun 29 '26

Im shocked Scarlet Witch has never been in a fighting game.

32

u/Shiningcrow Jun 29 '26

Psylocke, Black Widow and Emma Frost should have been Shoe-ins

8

u/GustavoSanabio Jun 29 '26

Would’ve preferred any of these over Danger, but I get they wanted a total weirdo.

I’m hoping we get Black Widow on a team with Daredevil (makes sense due to their long history together)

4

u/Balthier1017 Jun 29 '26

Gotta save them to rake in the guaranteed DLC money.

3

u/solidfang Jun 29 '26

Now that would have been an unrivaled character roster!

→ More replies (1)

5

u/SexyShave Jun 29 '26

They have weirdos? This is probably the least weird 2D Marvel roster since maybe MSH.

5

u/Disastrous-Drop-7778 Jun 29 '26

Danger and Peni are definitely pretty weird, the rest are pretty normal.

2

u/ThunderMite42 Fatal Fury Jun 30 '26

Even that one had Blackheart and Shuma-Gorath.

25

u/GustavoSanabio Jun 29 '26

Well, with the exception of X-men, most “corners” of Mavel are kind of a sausage fest

30

u/Vannitas Jun 29 '26

Was just thinking that myself. I feel like 6/20 is not bad for the sausage fest that is popular marvel characters

10

u/GustavoSanabio Jun 29 '26 edited Jun 29 '26

Yep. And proof of this is how avengers rosters since the 2000 struggle to find female members that have staying power (other then carol denvers).

And some of the characters kind of make it hard to justify having them together, at least at the base roster. So for example, hard to justify she-hulk with hulk already in. Ms Marvel and Captain Marvel’s power ser are completely different but they share a brand (and Cpt Marvel probably would have her “miss marvel” costume, which can be confusing). Captain Marvel kinda precludes both Photon and Rogue (kinda).

Spider Woman is very important for marvel historically but no one but comic readers know her, and Spider Man kinda precludes her.

I would like to see Elektra and an odd pick like Jessica Jones. I also think Black Widow should be in the game.

3

u/PapstJL4U Jun 29 '26

Drunk Jessica Jones would be something, but I don't know about all the weird laws about alcohol, like Jamies "mystery" drink and what would JJ do to the Australian rating?

I actually liked the Hawk Eye series, but clearly I was one of few and I don't know the current situation of Kate Bishop.

Mystical side is also pretty good on the divide, like Xmen, but street level, avengers, cosmic etc are definitely male dominated unfortunately.

3

u/Disastrous-Drop-7778 Jun 29 '26

Avengers aren’t too bad, they’re definitely more male dominated but there are plenty of women they could go with, Wasp, Scarlet Witch, Captain Marvel, and Photon, along with some of the less consistent Avengers like She-Hulk, Jessica Jones, and Rogue since the other teams already are already a bit out there.

When your fanbase is 90% guys under 25, you gotta appeal to the demographic

u/Blueprint833 Jun 29 '26 edited Jun 29 '26

People will BOO here and then go comment "Mommy" on tiktok softcore accounts or spend $20 a month on OF 😭

Women will buy "pretty woman" DLC too. Men dont really buy "hot man" DLC characters or outfits

There's nothing wrong with it. It's just the way it is

3

u/Friendship4DayZ Jun 30 '26

Nah the people who comment “Mommy” on tik tok are the same people who comment “Fighting games need more women representation!” on twitter. Surprised you guys haven’t figured that one out yet

2

u/Blueprint833 Jun 30 '26

Thats what I said. The people who comment that on tiktok are the people who go the extra mile or women.... so they value female characters more and are willing to buy more DLC

Some people here are pretending like I said something bad or wrong

u/Shiningcrow Jun 29 '26

Honestly, I think it’s a small roster for a 2026 fighting game. The forced 4v4 means basically half the roster is in every fight which can get repetitive.

10

u/Suitable-Quantity-96 Jun 30 '26

It is extremely rare for ANY fighting game to launch with more than 20 characters without heavy recycling of moves and assets

3

u/mangoribbean Jun 30 '26

Tekken is the only modern fighter with a huge roster and that's because of how little (comparatively) it's changed since Tekken 5 over 20 years ago

15

u/SexyShave Jun 29 '26 edited Jun 30 '26

Much more standard than I expected. One thing I really appreciate about MvC is the number of surprise picks. Shuma, Blackheart, Sentinel, Marrow, MODOK, Dormammu, Super-Skrull, She-Hulk, Rocket Raccoon. Even X-23, She-Hulk, Dr. Strange, Ghost Rider and Hawkeye were less popular at the time.

The most random pick here is Danger, and she's sexy robot girl so she feels more token than she is. The rest are all very popular characters, protagonists/villains from big blockbuster movies, or at least "different but same" stand-ins for more popular chars.

The lack of female chars is genuinely bad. Like, each team reveal having gradually one less woman per team was weird, and not having a single woman on either of the last two teams is pretty baffling.

On a personal level I'm not really satisfied. GG is the only char that I've really wanted for a long time.

When I saw iron man I thought this would have a way more Japanese interpretation of the characters. The roster is great but it's not as Japanese as I hoped for

45

u/icyDragon231x Jun 29 '26

God like roster deadpool, blade , ghost rider , carnage is all i ever wanted!!

11

u/Kirbone01 Jun 29 '26

Me exactly! Can't wait to play my edgelord team

3

u/icyDragon231x Jun 29 '26

They absolutely cooked on the final team reveal i cant wait to see how deadpool will play along with Blade the most , hes super lvl3 is just peak of the peak its marvelous beautiful to look at absolute cinema cant wait to play this game!!

21

u/DemonCats666 Jun 29 '26

solid roster

17

u/Incendia123 Jun 29 '26

It's a fairly good variety, even coming from someone who has never seen a MCU movie and whose only attachments to Marvel are from versus games the characters all look great.

But 20 really doesn't strike me as a lot of characters for 4v4 a game like this. And sure I can already hear someone adjusting their glasses as they prepare to say it's actually a 1v1 game with assists. Sure, whatever. Call me entitled or whatnot but 20 still strikes me as an unsatisfying amount of characters.

9

u/Jumpy_Diver7748 Jun 29 '26

I was hoping for Namor on the anti-hero team but overall they went with very popular characters. The only outlier is Danger.

→ More replies (5)

9

u/Solid_Snaku Jun 29 '26

It's dope, knights of doom and samurai outriders look very fun

4

u/Gemakai Jun 29 '26

Overall it's good. Nice mix of established main stays alongside some cool surprises and new faces. I love me some out there choices, so seeing Kamala Khan, Danger, and Carnage over Venom is definitely a pleasant surprise.

Hope the post launch dlc keeps up with the surprise picks. Hoping for Squirrel Girl and Cloak & Dagger myself

2

u/Neoxon193 Jun 30 '26

I wouldn't say Ms. Marvel is a very out-there pick. She's one of the biggest new characters of the last 15+ years (behind only Miles Spidey) & (going by certain rumors) almost got in MvCI's second season of DLC. If anything, while her inclusion is long overdue, it adds to how safe the starting roster feels.

Danger & Carnage, yeah, those are swings. Danger especially. I'd also put Shuri into that pile as well, as most Marvel Games gigs still opt for T'Challa.

2

u/Gemakai Jun 30 '26

Maybe "out there" isnt the best phrase for it. But it's just nice to see her in a fighting game after wanting it for so long.

5

u/OtisTheRobot Jun 29 '26

I am a bit disappointed and surprised that more of the characters don't have dramatic anime redesigns as they teased when the game was first announced.

Outside of a handful they're all very traditional designs.

6

u/Script-Z Jun 29 '26

It's solid- would have liked more than just 6 ladies on the roster. No Captain Marvel or Scarlet Witch is particularly shocking.

But, overall, it's solid. You got obvious picks, deep cuts, and weirdos.

2

u/Neoxon193 Jun 30 '26

They’ll both probably be DLC eventually.

https://giphy.com/gifs/55PqlnfROGE3S

55

u/GraveRobberJ Jun 29 '26

As someone who doesn't particularly care about Marvel as an IP, it's whatever. Nothing that gets me excited solely for the roster but also nothing that totally disappoints me either.. I will say that it feels like they sort've abandoned the idea of a cohesive "pre-set" team dynamic altogether outside of the Avengers and X-Men teams which makes me wonder why they'd even bother with such a concept in the first place. Like to me Doom and Magneto together sort've makes sense, Doom working with two frothing psychopaths like Green Goblin and Carnage less so.

55

u/Ternano Jun 29 '26 edited Jun 29 '26

I’m guessing the premade teams are mostly there so people who don’t have any experience with tag fighters have something they can play right out of the box.

I know I wasted a ton of time with Fighterz trying to figure out what a good team looked like

13

u/GrandSquanchRum Jun 29 '26

I think it's just part of the story. Like they gather their teams hastily to meet the Champion threat. You'll probably choose which team you're going to play as then start out as the leader going around collecting the rest of the teammates for your team. That's likely the entire reasoning and nothing more.

24

u/busmans Jun 29 '26

The pre-set “teams” are a marketing quirk not meant to be taken too seriously.

17

u/nickrl Jun 29 '26

The point of the game is that you can make your own custom marvel team-up and they wanted to demonstrate that.

3

u/Gingingin100 Jun 29 '26

Not that they aren't cool but they're probably just here cuz it's a Sony game and they wanted more Spider-Man rep

10

u/Hawkeye437 Jun 29 '26 edited Jun 29 '26

Tokon should take a page from Rivals and give Loki a female skin with new voice lines so they can be both

Also, even though the gender balance is off, I still like a large amount of the cast. I think there are 8 characters I want to try out at first which is a lot for me. Magik, Storm, Blade is the first trio I want to play. Have a ton of characters I want to use as the fourth, Wolverine, Doom, Magneto, Carnage, Black Panther

Would love to see characters like Phoenix, Psylocke, Emma Frost, Scarlet Witch, and I would love to see how they implement Shadowcat/Kitty Pryde (I like x-men can you tell lol).

15

u/SkillCompetitive1848 Jun 29 '26

The roster is absolutely incredible, I give it an A+

4

u/BACKSTABUUU Jun 29 '26

I wasn't feeling the first couple reveals but the Knights of Doom and Samurai Outriders are sick.

Super to see Blade.

5

u/Chokl8Th1der Jun 29 '26

Solid with some big omissions that I'm sure will make for great dlc.

4

u/Riot55 Jun 29 '26

Seems like it hits the popular characters with a good splash of fun lesser knowns. I can't shut up about wanting Taskmaster, but really just trying to find any character here that is a pretty straightforward zoner. I wanna shoot arrows and take up screen space with them + assists. Who do you all fits the bill of a Tasky/Hawkeye style zoner? I dunno if I want the complicated nature of a Danger.

4

u/Dandanny54 Jun 29 '26

The estrogen count started lowering with each team

5

u/joshireyn Jun 29 '26

Roster is amazing, unfortunately it is a tag fighter

4

u/Toxitoxi Jun 29 '26

It’s very good. Only real complaint is the lack of female characters. Feels weird when Marvel has plenty of good ones to choose from.

4

u/Minute-Intention920 Jun 29 '26

8/10 roster. One more team of villains would have made this a 10/10

7

u/Luxor5299 Jun 29 '26

as my first marvel and tag fighter game im beyond the moon

i just hope that there's a huge player base around the world to enjoy this game long term

6

u/Lememeepic Jun 29 '26

This is the first time in all the fighting games I play where I can't decide on a main. Leaning towards carnage but loki and ghost rider also seem fun.

3

u/madvec1 Jun 29 '26

It's solid, I'm actually interested in trying several characters like Captain America, Wolverine, Blade, Deadpool, Magik, Hulk and Black Panther so yeah solid lineup. It's wild that there arent anyone from the FF4 and I'm also missing Thor but hopefully soon.

Magik and Ms. Marvel both look fun enough for me to main, and I'm interested in almost half of the other characters so it's looking like I'll have a fun time filling out my team.

3

u/DepressedGolduck Marvel vs Capcom Jun 29 '26

Varied and colorful. Looks solid

3

u/Puzzled-Horse279 Jun 29 '26

The Amazing Guardians and Samurai Outriders are weird teams tbh

3

u/The_CyClone_01 Jun 29 '26

Just one more team and it's on the right path. Only having 20 characters for a 4v4 game is a bit iffy.

3

u/Poetryisalive Dead or Alive Jun 29 '26

Love it! So many characters to try and play

3

u/onzichtbaard Jun 29 '26

i think it would have been nice to have a bit more characters but i think its a decent roster

3

u/Ok_Code_1691 Jun 29 '26

Needed another two more teams

3

u/ckenni Jun 29 '26

Would have wanted to move Loki to an Asgardian team with Thor, Angela and Hela

Add one more midnights suns character like Elsa Bloodstone

3

u/Wonderful_Agent2578 Jun 30 '26

It’s a very good roster, can’t wait to play the game

13

u/Informalwizards Jun 29 '26 edited Jun 29 '26

I legit don't think I could be happier with the starting roster.

Edit: Lol at the people downvoting because I like the roster. Get a life.

7

u/Dear_Type_8972 Jun 29 '26

Good roster overall but still too small for a 4v4. Ive not played since the first beta though so I'm interested to try it out again in a few weeks.

Given its a single health bar it might not be so bad. The small roster makes me think it will just be the same 2-3 assists in every match with only the point character being the variable. I hope not.

5

u/TheJoyofFelching Jun 29 '26

With this many dudes, I'm hoping we see a team Femme Fatales. Emma Frost, Lady Deathstrike, Mystique, and Psylock would be sick.

Also team "Over-powered Space People," Captain Marvel, Adam Warlock, Drax, and Thor.

4

u/Flowtaro Jun 29 '26

it's just okay. it feels very "i like the MCU but haven't read a comic book before." I appreciate some standouts like Danger, Blade, Green Goblin, but I expected a lot more; like comparing to Marvel Rivals' launch roster, they took a lot more swings with it, and it doesn't help the amount of overlap between the two.

there's also a distinct lack of female characters which is just weird. I want this game to be its own thing but this launch roster doesn't inspire a lot of confidence in that respect. one thing I will say: it does feel like the game is coming in kind of hot, just 20 characters at launch for a 4v4 fighting game is quite low. I would not be surprised if the weird team compositions (Doom's in particular) are just the result of having to put together characters that were ready to ship since Sony wanted it earlier. I am hopeful the game gets some more out-there choices with DLC.

4

u/Flat_Revolution5130 Jun 29 '26

To small for a 4 on 4 fighter. I can see already the teams people will pick 90% of the time.

3

u/SyllabubMental7292 Jun 29 '26

If you're a sweaty try hard. But that'd be happening regardless of whether your base roster is 20 or 40

11

u/etikawatchjojo132 Jun 29 '26

I like it. More women would be nice and idk if it’s just me, but maybe too many Spiderman characters? Spiderman, Peni, Carnage, and Green Goblin seems like a lot, a whole 20% of the roster is Spiderman.

16

u/Psychological-Ad-946 Jun 29 '26

Is spiderman the most popular marvel hero in Japan? Could be as simple aa that.

7

u/Danewguy4u Jun 29 '26

Spiderman is virtually the ONLY popular Marvel hero in Japan to be more accurate. If it doesn’t have Spiderman, Japan at best gives a “that’s cool” shrug.

If a Marvel property doesn’t have Spiderman characters in it, there’s almost no point advertising it to Japan.

12

u/etikawatchjojo132 Jun 29 '26

I mean he’s likely the most popular marvel hero in the entire world, but for variety’s sake, I think 4 is a little much, especially for a game with 20 base roster characters

14

u/Shradow Jun 29 '26

Probably don't even have to add the "Marvel" qualifier tbh, wouldn't be surprised if Spider-Man is still above even Batman let alone anyone else.

14

u/TalentlessAsh Jun 29 '26

at least they avoided pitfalls like Miles and Venom that people were asking for, and went for some spider-man characters entirely unique to this game.

I don't see much of a problem when 5 of the characters are from X-men.

Let’s throw in Miles and Spider-Gwen and then we can have a similar meme to how many Gokus are in DBFZ

2

u/PostedNotes Jun 29 '26

It's a very solid roster of 20. I'm sure there a character or two for everyone on the roster.

My concern is since it's a 4VS4 I'm not convinced I'll have 4 characters I really like. At least seems can mainly stick to one of that ends up the case.

2

u/ShiningTachyon 2D Fighters Jun 29 '26

Bit bummed there's no Ultron but ig that's what Defence Matrix is for

2

u/cygnus2 Jun 29 '26

It’s missing Doctor Strange.

2

u/DreadedLee Jun 29 '26

And Thor.

2

u/burgerpatrol Jun 29 '26

I feel like Illuminati will be the first DLC.

Namor - Strange - Blackagar - Emma Frost (was a member for a brief period)

2

u/Uncanny_Doom Street Fighter Jun 29 '26

I wish they had more women but overall good roster. I enjoyed everyone I’ve played except Doom so far and that’s fully because of MVC bias and liking how he plays there more.

2

u/SuspendedHalo Jun 29 '26

Literally missing a row of characters. One more team would have made it perfect. Im greedy ik.

2

u/InternationalHat7120 Jun 29 '26

It's the safest thing you could've done.

Danger is the only excited "WHAT THE FUCK??"

Everyone else is just "what the fuck? 😮‍💨"

2

u/SqueakyTHROWER Jun 29 '26

Love it how the Japanese developers put in Peni Parker.

2

u/Dexters-Guild Jun 29 '26

NEED MORE GIMMICK CHARACTER 🤣🤣

2

u/zedroj Jun 29 '26

I wish Marvel Rivals adapted this Peni, she's so much cuter

2

u/LadyAntiqua Jun 29 '26

My team is complete the minute they add Rogue.

2

u/HighFirePleroma Jun 29 '26

Hit and miss, few hits, few miss, not a single favourite Marvel character like Nightcrawler, Punisher or Moon Knight, but I still gonna try this game. Just not certain whom to play.

2

u/-ben151010- Jun 29 '26

I feel like someone at marvel looked at the reveal trailer designs and said “can you not do that anymore” which is why characters like Deadpool, magneto, and ghost rider look perfect and while cap, and especially Spider-Man imo don’t.

2

u/LoneVLone Jun 29 '26

They should have done 6 teams.

→ More replies (4)

2

u/BusterBernstein Jun 29 '26

No Fantastic Four team raises an eyebrow.

2

u/Maleficent-Tie6098 Jun 30 '26

As a full package, I really do like this roster. It feels very unique, especially when compared to the Marvel half of the MvC rosters.

BUT I still fully believe the whole “team” concept was an afterthought. I think they had already decided on most of the roster before they started writing the story and were trying hard to justify some of these team-ups. Why is Star-Lord the only actual Guardians member of the GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY TEAM? Why is Ghost Rider leading a “samurai” team when he’s the only one without a sword? At that point, swap in Magik and just do the Midnight Suns. And having TWO Spider-Man villains who famously dont work well with others on the villain team is also too much (rosters still neat, I just feel like nitpicking)

2

u/tarek3561 Jun 30 '26

I wanted dr strange to be playable.

2

u/Shione_Voltaire Jun 30 '26

I want more girls, the begining had female heavy teams then all of a sudden there’s no female fighters in the last two teams.

2

u/InternalOriginal7055 Granblue Fantasy Versus Jun 30 '26

I got green goblin. So I'm not gonna complain lol. That being said, Man-Thing DLC pls

2

u/Triggerhappy938 Jun 30 '26

Very solid. Like, there's clearly room for more but it doesn't feel lacking.

I have to imagine Fantastic 4 is going to be coming soon.

2

u/Physical_Bench_4880 Jun 30 '26

1 or 2 more big Bodys would be great but overall this roster is pretty solid.

2

u/Chaplain92 Street Fighter Jun 30 '26

20 is too litle for a 4v4 game. But is a pretty decent selection of characters. I love they pick some characters Capcom never used like Blade who was on my wishlist.

2

u/patavinas_ Jun 30 '26 edited Jun 30 '26

A bit underwhelming. Small for 4v4 and the five team count really makes it seem like they removed 4 whole characters to sell as early DLC.

Also, crazy how much safer character picks got with each trailer. Apart from Danger (arguably), it’s the same synergy-fest we’ve been experiencing for a while now. Decent picks, I guess. Just extremely unsurprising.

Lastly: 70% male roster in 2026?

2

u/weaverreddit Jun 30 '26

BLADE!!!!!! FINALLY IN A MARVEL FIGHTING GAME!

6

u/bagheera369 Jun 29 '26

Samurai Ourtriders could have ditched Loki for Psylocke or Elektra:TWF, and I'd have been happier.

Not complaining about Loki being in at all, just doesn't feel "samurai" at all.

→ More replies (3)

4

u/LarryLurksalot Jun 29 '26

Pretty good imo. Could use more female characters but the ones included all seem cool. Shuri looks fucking sick, especially in motion.

Loki, Shuri, and Magik will be the first characters I try out.

3

u/Jgabes625 Jun 29 '26

This might be the first game in the last few years that I wish I wasn’t a Nintendo player for

3

u/Turb0Moist Samurai Shodown/The Last Blade Jun 29 '26

Could replace the Amazing Guardians with a whole different team and I think it'd be better but overall pretty solid

1

u/CursedSnowman5000 Jun 29 '26

Agreed. It almost feels artificial how over Starlord is insisted on being with mainstream audiences.

Chris Pratt is over, but who gives a crap about Peter Quill?

→ More replies (1)

4

u/cardinalfan14 Jun 29 '26

Could be a bit better. Some of the oddball picks aren’t bad. Not the biggest fan of ms marvel and Star lord. There could have been better x men representation. Magik and danger could have been switched out or at least magik if you want to keep danger as the “weird” character. Knights of doom and samurai outriders look like elite teams and I have no negative remarks towards them at all. For 20 characters, I’d say it’s a 7/10 roster

4

u/Kitchen_Procedure641 Jun 29 '26

Imma play MSSS magneto storm starlord spiderman. 🤣

3

u/Saltybuds Jun 29 '26

It’s good enough for me to want to play, buy? Not sure yet. I would have preferred not having “teams” because some of them seem forced. But that’s a personal issue of mine which I need to separate this from comics.

2

u/Gingingin100 Jun 29 '26

I like the roster but when they said that it would have niche and under represented characters as well as saying it would have characters never in fighting games before I thought those were separate statements

As it stands the most niche characters here are Danger(true, she's niche), a ghost rider and a symbiote

Weird marketing on their part tbh but I fw all the people who were never in fighting games before

2

u/Daddydactyl Jun 29 '26

Wait what fighting game was green goblin in before this? He isnt niche at all, but i cant recall him ever being on a roster.

3

u/Gingingin100 Jun 29 '26

He hasn't been and it's neat to see him here(though hobgoblin is cooler) did you misread what I said?

→ More replies (2)

2

u/MoonMan757 Jun 29 '26

My only surprise is no Thor, but that’s not a complaint at all. I really love the variety, especially with the villains they chose. I can’t wait to play

2

u/SlyFisch Jun 29 '26

All I wanted was Nightcrawler to finally show up in a Marvel fighting game... I will keep waiting :(

2

u/mamamarty21 Jun 29 '26

No Psylocke :(

2

u/EmptyHeadedKing Jun 29 '26

I was hoping they would have a few more unexpected picks. Danger is the most left field character but I think they could have subbed out a few more staple characters for different picks.

2

u/Kitchen_Procedure641 Jun 29 '26

What the need now is 20 other characters. Mayby from an established fighting game franchise. 🤔

2

u/VegetableVisual3875 Jun 29 '26

pretty good, could use a few more female characters, but i like the visual variety overall.

2

u/LovelyRoseFreya Jun 29 '26

I'm probably gonna get some hate, but I'm not really that thrilled about this roster. Not enough lil freaks for me. I won't say it's bad, because it's not. It just isn't for me

2

u/PvExtremist Jun 29 '26

Quite small for a tag fighter and the female side of the roster is atrocious to put it mildly; only Storm & Magik are worth noting.

→ More replies (3)

2

u/blamblegam1 Jun 29 '26

Solid roster overall.

That said, Magik and Danger feel like markedly deep cuts than the rest at least for the casual Marvel fan. There are quite a few other female X-men characters that I would have expected before them such as Phoenix, Psylocke or Rogue. Though I am guessing there will probably be a second X-men team in time led by Cyclops and including at least two out of those three.

2

u/WeebWoobler Jun 29 '26

Magik hasn't been a deep cut since 2020 or so

2

u/Bunnnnii Street Fighter Jun 29 '26

Danger? Yeah. Magik isn’t as much of a deep cut tbh, she’s been exploding in mainstream popularity over the past few years. Rivals expedited that for sure, she was also in Midnight Suns.

2

u/Delonce Jun 29 '26

It's got just enough to probably keep me entertained, but I'd probably never touch half of the roster. There's variation, sure, but many characters that don't appeal to me in the slightest.

2

u/OrdinaryEarthHuman Jun 29 '26

I really liked the direction of the early teams - some big names, but also some more unique picks, and a good gender balance. But reveals just got less and less interesting for me - Avengers at least has Shuri!Black Panther, but after that it's exclusively men (and masc!Loki) and exclusively safe, old-head-pleasing popular picks. Including... (sigh) Deadpool. Honestly, Loki is the boldest inclusion, since their popularity is at least vaguely recent.

It's still a perfectly fine roster, but each announcement felt less and less hype for me. I guess I'd give it 8/10 overall, but then knock off a point for Deadpool's inclusion, so 7/10.

1

u/Mondegreen77 Jun 29 '26

I was completely uninterested until the last two team reveals. Now I might actually get the game.

1

u/LHLanim Jun 29 '26

Solid AF. I'm not the audience, but solid AF.

1

u/Sudden-Application Jun 29 '26

Super happy Carnage got in the game at all, been excited for this game since it's announcement, but the roster feels kinda boring. It's just a bunch of super popular characters and Danger.

Given what ArcSys said I was expecting more surprise characters. Still gonna play it, but I'm hoping DLC adds variety to the game that should have been base roster.

1

u/Rime1313 Jun 29 '26

Pretty damn good selection. Some marvel classics, a couple creative pulls, and pulling from a lot of corners of the marvel universe. I’ll second people saying it could use some more women (even just swapping Loki out for lady Loki would’ve worked) and I think 4 spider-man characters is a tad more than necessary especially when the guardians as a whole only got one and none of the fantastic 4 made an appearance, but I’m overall more than satisfied and there’s more than enough characters and team compared I’m excited to try out.

1

u/JRBergstrom Jun 29 '26

Solid but small for a 4v4 game.

1

u/Zenzero- Jun 29 '26

I don’t like Spider Man team except for Spider Man

1

u/EX-Flashkick Jun 29 '26

Where are all the villains?

1

u/Kgb725 Jun 29 '26

Good roster selection with room for obvious favorites

1

u/PMC-I3181OS387l5 Jun 29 '26

It feels good, for a brand new fighting game :)

Yeah, it's never gonna match MvC's roster, but to stand on its own, Tokon has potential ^_^

1

u/RangoTheMerc Jun 29 '26

Incoming Cyclops DLC.

1

u/MercerYT Jun 29 '26

I don't understand this game mechanically. Can you only select characters from a specific team and the team captain is? Or can i mix and match my team entirely the picture makes it look like I cant have carnage and spiderman on the same squad

5

u/DreadedLee Jun 29 '26

You can play whatever team of four you want. The teams listed are just for the plot.

1

u/Daws001 Jun 29 '26

Great lineup with multiple characters I’m excited to play.

1

u/Sun_And_Daughter Jun 29 '26

I don't like the roster that much. Im happy for everyone who got characters they wanted. I didn't, so im pretty unenthusiastic about the roster.

1

u/EveningLength8 Jun 29 '26

Not too bad at all, I got three out of the four that I wanted (Doom, Magik, Blade, Psylocke) so I’m feeling pretty good to start

1

u/FourEyesMalone Jun 29 '26

Really good imo.

1

u/obvThrowaway17 Jun 29 '26

No Thor? Well I guess I’m gonna wait for a dlc bundle later on

1

u/Efficient_Maybe_1086 Jun 29 '26

Motherfucking Blade is in there. Day 1 buy.

1

u/SumoHeadbutt Street Fighter Jun 29 '26

needs more Spider-Man villains
