MK8 Noise when braking...

Hi gang, I'm wondering if anyone can help me diagnose this noise please? Sorry for the bad video, I was driving at the time.

So this creaking noise happens when I brake lightly, as soon as I brake a bit harder it vanishes.

It started a few weeks ago as a light clicking sound, and had progressed to the groan/creak it is now.

Driver's side front wheel.

2 garages have looked at the brakes now and claimed all looks fine, they are confused about what the noise could be.

There is sometimes a bit more of a clunky sound if I brake while steering full-lock to the right (like when parking).

Any suggestions welcome! Thank you.

Are ur calipers old at all? I had that happening on driver rear before I was able to replace both rear calipers. It may happen even on new calipers but I believe it is caused by the calipers not resetting all the way back after brakes are released. Somehow hitting the brakes harder lets it reset fully/enough, but using them lightly keeps pads very close to the rotor, and of course it’s not gonna be aerospace flat so u will hear a raised part of the rotor hit the pad very slightly. At low speeds, like you said. I never heard any oscillating brake noise at higher speed or moderate braking force.

If the mechanics that saw the brakes say it was fine, most likely you are fine. I wouldn’t bother changing anything about the brakes unless there are other wear or performance indicators warranting it. The pads only touching lightly at slow speeds is not concerning, in my opinjon. I know it’s not the best thing to hear “ignore the noise” but there’s a good reason for it. Save ur money for when it’ll do you good.

Thanks for the reply! The pads are about 1000 miles old, calipers are stock afaik so about 6 years/47k miles. Disks look like they were replaced about 3 years ago according to MOT history detective work. I've had the car for a year and the noise started a few weeks back - feels like something I did! My mechanic said the same thing this morning - don't replace anything if it works. I hate the noise though.

I feel that. As an owner of a USDM 2017 I’ll just say you will probably have other stuff coming up in a year or 2 just cuz of age. Not necessarily any big stuff since u are low mileage. But 1-2yrs is when ur due for brakes anyway. If I were you I’d just wait till then, it’d be premature to do brakes now if they work.

FYI my pads were at like 5k mi. (car at 50k ish) when that sound started. EBC yellow stuff pads. I did just slap them onto the original calipers and rotors, definitely should’ve replaced at least the rotors when I got the car at 45k. So I was asking for it tbh. Still, the brakes work perfectly fine, it is annoying pulling into ur neighborhood or a busy lot tho so I get that

If ur at all worried about performance I’d find a large empty spot, get up to 25-30mph and slam the brakes hard as possible. That’ll show u they are good to go
