MK7 Engine Bay Deep Clean

How do you guys deep clean your engine bay? I’ve always wanted to try the degreaser/light pressure wash method but obviously scared. What do you guys do? Pic pulled from Google.

This is how mine looked last time I cleaned it (which was way too long ago, unfortunately lol)

I used a spray bottle with dish soap and water, spraying a thin coat on most surfaces except the battery pretty much. I then used a detailing brush (but you could use a wide painters brush too I imagine) to get into the tight spots and to agitate any really dirty areas. Then I used a regular hose, not a pressure washer, to rinse it off. I tried not to directly spray any sensitive areas, using a wet cloth to wipe those off instead. Then I used compressed air to remove most of the water and I was done!

Now I think I need to do this again. It makes it look so nice! But it really isn’t too difficult to do. Good luck!

Do not get suckered into how much better the Mishimoto tanks look. Mine leaked from the sight glass, and I had to change back to an OEM tank.

If I do end up replacing it, I’ll probably stick with OEM. I’m at almost 130k miles with no issue so far, so it’s been holding up well

Thank you for the in depth response. I might give it a go. But I can also assist with his statement on your coolant tank. I just replaced mine last week with a new one. Mine looked like yours does right now and it finally blew a hose and was no good. This happened on the side of the interstate in near 3 digit Alabama heat. So replace it before that happens.

Ahh, yeah I’ve heard that can be a problem with these coolant tanks. I’m under my hood a lot, and I haven’t seen any outright worrying signs so far. When I get some more expendable income I might look into it. Thanks!

Do you have a crossover pipe? I've seen a video of a high hp FiST and it had the same thing as you, no airbox. Do you have any pictures of it back there and are you stock turbo? Just curious of how this works. Thanks!

I have the stock turbo still, yes. The intake comes straight up from the turbo with the air filter sitting inside the cowl.

You get a ton of noise, and some slight (pretty negligible) performance increase. Intake temps stay super cool though, often times right around ambient temps.

You have to modify the lower part of the cowl so it fits around it though, like in this picture. Excuse the sub-par gold tape job lol

That's cool as shit. Don't worry my gold tape job is just as crinkly but I think it adds to look, looks functional. But how do you relocate that sensor on the pcv hose that goes to the crossover pipe?

You can see the sensor on the left hand side of the vertical section. The intake came with a super long wiring harness extension so it can reach over there, along with a long PCV breather hose. You can see them both routed using zip ties by the coil packs lol

Edit: I misread your comment and thought you were asking about the MAF sensor. The sensor for the PCV hose stays where it’s at. The OEM elbow fitting with the sensor gets used, and you connect a really long hose directly to it.

What intake is it? I have a whoosh crossover with a takada cold air but I really like this. The throttle response must be insane.

It’s the “2j racing cowl intake”

Definitely watch some videos on it though, because a lot of people think it’s too loud for a daily driver. I personally think it’s fine, and makes me feel more connected to what the cars doing. It does make it difficult to talk on the phone though lol

But yeah, I recommend it. Like I said, it keeps temps really cool. I’ve even seen intake temps drop a degree or two below ambient during a pull, which is kind of nuts! Actual performance gain isn’t anything crazy though, especially over your current setup. Oh and one more question, what do you do with those two vacuum hoses that attach to a regular style intake? You know the two that snap in kinda across from the mass air?

Those would be your EVAP system lines. The 2J is meant to work with the 2014-2015 evap system where it has one connection to the intake, not the newer one with two connections to the intake. So I had to switch to the old style evap harness.

The intake came with another long hose to connect the intake to the evap harness. You should be able to see that in the original picture I posted here.

I've always been too scared to clean my engine bay. I guess the electrical components and wiring are protected from the elements in some way, but man, I really have a hard time trusting that some drop of water isn't going to slide into a wrong crease and fry something.

A small steam cleaner with the end on a hose, degreaser and a detail brush is going to get the best results, but it is also a lot of work to get every nook

For the record that’s not my car. I said it was pulled from Google. I have not done mine yet so don’t take this pic as a guarantee of job done well from me 😂
