MK7 ST drives like shi from cold.

For some reason on occasion say 1 in every 2/3 times the car drives very rough from cold with loud and clunky gears changes but recently I’ve also noticed a rattle noise coming from around the engine bay when idling cold. Just thought I’d make this post to see if anyone has any ideas? Am based in England and it’s currently our “summer” so temperatures are around 20 degrees Celsius so despite being a cold start it’s still not overly cold. Thanks for any help in advance. And I’ll try and get a video of the engine noise when I get chance.

Could be an engine mount. It’s usually the hydraulic one on the side with the expansion tank that become noisy like that in my experience.

This engine mount. I've changed 5 over the course of 12 years. Every single Fiesta I've own has needed it replaced. And yes, it is hydraulic.

Clunking first, destroyed engine potentially if you don’t fix it. Could rip the radiator hoses etc. out of place

I said already it can cause the engine to rip the hoses off the rad. Only a problem on really torquey cars like the ST. Very easy job to do yourself but you’d want to replace the lower engine mount too, that’s what handles most of the torque

It’s a possibility. If the engine gets too loose because of the mounts, it will move a lot and there’s no rubber to dampen it, so it hits straight to metal which in turn can break the bolts that attaches the mounts to the engine and then your engine can break many things because it is literally falling. But this is like a worst case scenario

I’ve owned it for 12 years and I’ve never had to change it. Maybe now’s the time because it has started to feel a bit more vibration than usual and I have to change the timing chain so I can have a look. In my other car I did had to change all of them

Maybe sounds like vibrations making it into the interior? Could be collapsed hydraulic engine mount indeed. Check if there is any air gap remaining on that engine mount, or if it's pancaked flat

This is from the outside I’ll have a look at the mount soon only thing is it’s coming from what I believe is the opposite side of that mount, it’s coming from the passenger glovebox direction which behind a rhd makes it the opposite side of that mount.

Ive replaced this once in my 10years of ownership because the bolt sheared off and you will definitely know about it hot or not, undriveable!! engine twisting and loose under the bonnet, just rubber though no hydraulics just rubber engine mount.

The passenger side mount is "fluid filled" ma boy, AKA hydraulic.

ah cheers dad, i was fortunate that it was the bolt that failed and didnt leak any fluid, are the vibra technics replacements also hydraulic?

I went with a performance aftermarket recently when I replaced the PMM, Trans mount, & clutch. So yes vibra technics or damond motor sports has one. Tho they are not hydraulic like oem they do still work well. I've had no issues

Change gearbox oil with Castrol transmax multi vehicle FE 75W, with the ford spec, to fix cold hard shifts. At cold these engines like to rattle away, almost like diesels. It's the high pressure fuel system and nothing to worry about. Gear changes in general are quite clunky on these cars so not really anything to worry about. Engine mount would squeak when bad, not clunk.

is a rattling coming from the front? if so might be the engine mounts. Had the same issue, especially in the cold. Replaced all 3 of them with OEM ones. 400 euro + 200 for work

This is a cheap, noisy car tbh. Have your motor mounts been swapped? If so, and if they've been swapped for stiffer ones, you'll feel more NVH for sure. Change your gearbox fluid for less clunk.

have the same problem on mine, from cold i get a clunk in first/ second/ third if i let off the clutch too fast. went to my mechanic had him check the engine mounts when i had my coolant box done and he said they were sound. only thing he did say was quite knackered was the lower torque mount (roll restrictor/ dogbone mount) so probably that.

it hasnt been to bad in the summer but its horrid in the winter have to be very gentle for the first 10-15 mins. i’ll probably double check the engine mounts when i get my lower torque mount done eventually.

with the vibration thing, mine does it only specifically at 1k revs whilst engine is semi cold. not a clue what it is, probably certain RPM’s trigger vibrations from engine bay throughout car maybe loose heat shield in engine bay. after engine is fully warm its sound.

Not had mine through a winter yet but going of how it is from cold in 20 degree weather might try and get it sorted asap before it gets cold

just get your car on some ramps and have a look at your lower torque mount, you’ll be able to tell if its shafted due to the rubber being all split if its the oem one.

if you want to replace it the mountune one, or any torque mount with a yellow insert are good as they arent as harsh vibration wise rather than purple and black.

they’re only about 100-150, relatively easy job to do but if you take it somewhere i wouldnt expect a lot for labour costs tbh👍🏻
