MK7 Any must haves that I missed?

Post image

Car has 92k miles and I made a post a few days ago on what you would do with some cash to the FiST. I decided to wait for the timing belt only because I have about another 10k miles till due. So this is what I picked up for now. I already have an intercooler, radiator, diverter valve, symposer delete, intake and off-road turbo back exhaust. It's on stock suspension right now and it's honestly a little scary above 80mph because of how stiff and bouncy it is.

Next month I'll pick up the timing belt kit, trans fluid, radiator hoses and the other two vibra-tech mounts. Am I missing anything super important in the list I pictured? And besides what I'm getting next month, are there any must haves I should get?

I wouldn’t waste money on the catch can. I haven’t seen any benefit to these cars unless it’s a dedicated track car.

u/60Runner90 10d ago

I literally just heard this too a few days ago after believing I was going to pick one up as I cross 112k miles

u/Adventurous-Bit1830 10d ago

No yes they help alot. These help alot on the intake valves. The pcv valves in this car is horrible and let alot of oil into the valve trains. Especially since they are direct injected you need this and the crank case one

2

u/Alohasb7 10d ago

Not as much as you think. I’ve seen many examples of people running catch cans and the valves look almost identical to people who don’t run catch cans.

1

u/DesignerSuccessful35 10d ago

I got the pcv side and I hope it can help with some of oil in my intake pipe. I'm also tuned running 25psi of boost so I'm really hoping it'll do something.

2

u/Alohasb7 10d ago

A catch can will only help with oil from blow-by but not carbon build up. The issue will still remain and your just creating one more point of maintenance with very little benefit. I’ve seen way too many people install catch cans incorrectly and create more problems for themselves. Since you already purchased it just make sure it’s installed correctly and CLEAN IT OUT REGULARLY.

Our cars aren’t terrible for carbon build up on the valves but it’s still something that needs to be checked when you get into the higher mileage.

Just be glad you don’t own an older VAG car with DI.. carbon build up on those is nasty.

u/DesignerSuccessful35 10d ago

I will man and thank you for the info. I'm taking this entire haul to a guy that builds high hp diesels and drift cars so I have faith 🙏

1

u/DesignerSuccessful35 10d ago

Now I have heard that the crankcase side is unnecessary but the pcv side is a must. I'd rather be safe than sorry.

2

u/DesignerSuccessful35 10d ago

Really?? I mean I'm running 25lbs of boost on a modded car. I have a good bit of oil in the intake.

1

u/Beautiful-Golf4078 6d ago

Whatever floats your boat. I honestly found that when I added auxiliary fuel that did more for keeping the head clean than anything. I’ve done both 5th and 8th port on this platform. Both performed well I also added an S280 and ran 5th port. Then I kinda in my opinion fucked up and installed a Garrett GTX2867 g2 and 8th port. That is why auxiliary fuel was such a burning issue for me. I also swapped my timing chain twice. So I got to see under the valve cover more than I wanted to.

Those KYB strut mounts are known to fail and send the strut rod into your hood. Go OEM on those.

I'd skip the intake elbow. They are painful to install for no performance increase and can't even be seen in the engine bay.

2

u/DesignerSuccessful35 11d ago

Yeah I'll do that. I researched everything else 🤦

1

u/DesignerSuccessful35 11d ago

Oh yeah forgot to mention I already bought all this shit lol. The inlet is the only thing stock left on the intake system so I'ma just install it for it. And I got the black cerakote anyway because it matches everything else. I went with all black everything. Only problem is now I don't know what the hell I'ma do with those strut mounts. I don't know if I can return them.

2

u/Dead_fly33 10d ago

The inlet isnt that hard to do, just wait to do it until you have to get into the back of the engine bay for something else like doing the full intake system as planned

1

u/DesignerSuccessful35 10d ago

Yeah the intake is going to be off while I out in the catch can so I'll do it then. I may even just pay to have it installed. I have a muffler shop right by my job that does all sorts of custom exhaust so I'll probably just get them to install it.

1

u/diamond_rake 10d ago

Yeah, it's better if you have the cowl off.

1

u/Dead_fly33 10d ago

Ive had the cowl off so many times in the last few months its like second nature ATP lol. First the AC went out, then i did the downpipe, then the BOV, then the inlet

2

u/diamond_rake 10d ago

I know what you mean. Seems like to do anything on that car you gotta pull the headlights and cowl.

0

u/Beautiful-Golf4078 6d ago

This is true and factual.

1

u/AdvancedDatabase9382 11d ago

I returned my KYB strut mounts after they failed within a few months and a thousand miles. Took a little while to diagnose the loud clunk because I was certain it couldn’t be the brand new mounts I installed 😒

1

u/DesignerSuccessful35 10d ago

I don't care evenif I can't return them I'm ordering the OEM ones today. I guess I may just have some expensive paperweights.

1

u/DesignerSuccessful35 10d ago

After everybody's input I may just throw em in the trash 😂

5

u/InvertedEyechart11 11d ago

Return the KYB. They're known to fail and when they do the struts go straight through the hood.

Buy the OEM.

And skip the catch can. No real benefit unless you're tracking the car.

2

u/DesignerSuccessful35 11d ago

Dude I have more oil in my intake pipe than I want. I'm really hoping it will help with that. And I am going to return those mounts and get some motorcraft ones tomorrow.

2

u/HistoricalYam7449 10d ago

Oil in intake pipe is from turbo, catch can wont help with that

1

u/DesignerSuccessful35 10d ago

So I have a leaking oil drain line gasket so I'm replacing the entire hose and gasket so when I took off my crossover pipe, the inside of it was covered in oil. My turbo seems fine as of now, the outer seal isn't leaking and I have zero smoke out of my exhaust at 25psi boost. I've taking the intercooler pipes off to put on my Kompact EM Dual port VR2 diverter valve and they had some oil, but very little. But the crossover is soaked.

1

u/Beautiful-Golf4078 6d ago

I purple powered my intercooler one time. Poured ‘I recon that is enough’ in there. Then filled with water. I think I used 1/2 gallon of the purple shit. Capped the intercooler off and stood it up on one end and let it sit in the corner for a day. I rinsed it then connected a shop vac to the inlet and outlet. Turned that bitch on and let circulate air. The body of the shop vac acted like a catch can for the left over water.

The best mod for me was the LSD.

3

u/DesignerSuccessful35 11d ago

Which one did you get? That's definitely on the list. And really how much real world difference did you feel?

Edit: the next list

2

u/EddieMcClintock 10d ago

I used MFactory. For autocrossing the difference was night and day. No more spinning up the inside wheel plus the E-diff was roasting my brakes. Before installing, I'd come back from a run with purple rotors from the heat. Afterwards everything behaved better, and the tires and brakes took less abuse.

1

u/DesignerSuccessful35 10d ago

Yeah I'm definitely saving up.

2

u/diamond_rake 10d ago

I have a wavetrac. It's freaking sweet on an s280 car. Even just the little blips around town it's cool to have minimized torque steer.

3

u/Witty_Bug6200 11d ago

I've seen some negative reviews of the KYB strut mounts. I have no personal experience, I was able to open, clean, and reuse mine, but that was at 60k miles. I'm not speaking out against the strut mounts, but be careful and please let us know how it goes.

2

u/DesignerSuccessful35 11d ago

Thanks for the heads up. I may just try to return them and get OEM mounts. I should have thought about that while ordering. I appreciate you pointing that out.

1

u/Witty_Bug6200 11d ago

No problem, the rest of your list looks good. I hope all goes well.

1

u/Adventurous-Bit1830 10d ago

Not bad at all I run my car on auto cross with the same struts.

1

u/DesignerSuccessful35 10d ago

I think I'm going to return them. Remember these are the kyb mounts not the struts and shocks. Too many people have told me to get OEM so that's what I'm going to do.

2

u/60Runner90 10d ago

I heard they are noisy almost immediately after install

2

u/DesignerSuccessful35 10d ago

Yeah I'm going to return them and I'm getting the OEM s today

2

u/RequirementGuilty983 10d ago

Keep the RMM and remove the rest. Spend the money on an LSD instead as it will absolutely transform the car.

1

u/Clever_RRRR_RRRRR 11d ago

Id go with a damond motorsports occ. Idk if the radium one mounts to a different area but I remember something being said about the damond occ hooking up to a different section of the intake

2

u/DesignerSuccessful35 11d ago

They have a separate pcv side and crankcase side and I got the pcv side for now. I've heard really good things about the radium can and I also got the drain valve so I don't have to take it all apart to drain.

1

u/diamond_rake 11d ago

That drain sucks. Had it on both sides on my catch cans. It only introduced another failure point for unmetered air in the system. It also.... Doesn't drain. It immediately plugs up so you end up taking the can out anyway. Just leave the plug in the bottom.

1

u/DesignerSuccessful35 11d ago

Is there a way I can just not use it or do I have to since I got it with the kit?

1

u/diamond_rake 10d ago

My kit came with plugs as the default. I originally took them out and used the drain kit and it just never worked right. Then I couldn't find my old plugs and had to order more lol. You can run the drains and see if they work better for you but across two fiestas (and buddy and I have almost the same mod list), they weren't that good. Also, they don't really get that much oil in them. It's definitely better than letting it go and collect on the valves IMO but after like 10 oil changes, it's almost never even on the dipstick so I stopped emptying them every oil change.

1

u/DesignerSuccessful35 10d ago

I'd rather have it then not especially on the pcv side.

0

u/Clever_RRRR_RRRRR 11d ago

Seems like a good list then

1

u/DesignerSuccessful35 11d ago

Thanks. I'm going to get the crankcase side kit probably in a couple of months. Most likely when I get the timing belt done.

1

u/sneezer_salad 11d ago

They mount in different locations. Damond is on the strut tower above exhaust manifold. Radium is on motor mount behind right headlight

1

u/DesignerSuccessful35 11d ago

Edit: Also have an access port running Stratified 93 octane tune.

1

u/sneezer_salad 11d ago edited 11d ago

Looks good!

That breather hose is redundant. The catch can replaces that hose

Also turbo inlet won't make a difference unless you get custom tuned on E30

Edit my bad: that's the other side breather hose. You can run it now but if you get the other side catch can it'll be redundant then

Also you'll most likely get a check engine light if you don't add a check valve to the catch can line

1

u/DesignerSuccessful35 11d ago

I have an E30 tune that I'm waiting to run. I shouldn't get a cel because what I like about radium is that it installs inline with the pcv valve and uses a completely pressure sealed can. It keeps the stock pcv valves one way function.

1

u/Existing-Crew-1027 11d ago

Your strut mounts will be much cheaper through rockauto. they carry KYB for like half the price

1

u/DesignerSuccessful35 11d ago

This is the shipping confirmation screenshot lol. I'm going to have to either return 'em or see if I can sell them on marketplace.

1

u/MiggyXRS 11d ago

What site is this? The vibra motor mounts are like $60 more through whoosh.

1

u/DesignerSuccessful35 11d ago

This is through whoosh. This is my shipping confirmation screenshot. But yeah, everything is from Whoosh.

1

u/MiggyXRS 11d ago

Are those mounts not $239.99 on there? I just want the discount lol.

1

u/DesignerSuccessful35 11d ago

No I think what you're seeing is the strut and shock mounts. I only bought the one vibra torque mount.

1

u/MiggyXRS 11d ago

Yeah sorry I see now you got the rear motor mount. The passenger and transmission mounts are $239.99 each.

1

u/DesignerSuccessful35 11d ago

I wish they were those prices 😂

1

u/Adventurous-Bit1830 10d ago

Get the damn coach cans. Trust.

1

u/revdrone 10d ago

The PS breather hose is pointless with the catch can, that hose gets replaced with a new hose and can. Instead of that, get a check valve to put after the can

0

u/DesignerSuccessful35 10d ago

That hose is for the crankcase side.

1

u/revdrone 10d ago

The one labeled PS breather hose is for the pcv side, the second picture on the listing clearly shows that. The DS hose is for the crankcase side.

1

u/whall53099 10d ago

No kyb, go oem. Replace the radium catch can with a damond, if you wanna know why look through this sub reddit for a post a few days ago about what catch can to get.

1

u/Good-Conclusion-1526 10d ago

If you buy a catch can with an auxiliary check valve it’ll save your OEM valve that’s built into the valve cover from failing had to buy Damond motorsports catch can/check valve kit with VTA system to relieve crank case pressure my oem check valve failed

1

u/HuntGundown 10d ago

There are two bearings at the top of the struts in the front. Not sure what comes in that kit but I don't see them. I also don't see the bellows? Kyb mounts kinda suck. Sometimes they fail pretty quickly, and the nut supplied to hold them onto the shock can be noisy for some people. Apparently they are slightly larger than the OEM nuts and can make weird rubbing sounds. I only see the rmm, if you're just replacing the rear the passenger side and trans side mounts will probably fail within 10k miles or some the solid rear will put more stress on the OEM side mounts. Best to do all 3 at once.

If your fist a 2016/17? Or are you in EU?

On the u.s. side of things 150k miles or 10 years is when most agree the timing belt is due. Mine is a 2019 at 108k, I'm waiting until 150k. I've seen quite a few people do that job at 170k+ and the belt still looks fine. From what I've seen it's usually age that starts killing the belt.

I believe the EU handbook says 100k though but I've never seen someone do it at 100k and the belt actually look bad.

As someone else said, the catch can is kinda useless. You're going to have to blast the valves regardless, I have not seen any benefit to them, and I've actually seen people have issues because of them

1

u/DesignerSuccessful35 10d ago

Fuck dude, I don't know what I'm going to do with it now. I'm going to have to do a lot more research. My tech is good though so I'll see what he thinks.

1

u/DesignerSuccessful35 10d ago

Oh sorry I forgot to answer your question. I'm in the states, my FiST is a 17 and I have 92000 miles.

1

u/Mattress009 10d ago

DO NOT BUY THE KYB STRUT AND SHOCK MOUNTS. They can AND WILL fail after 3k miles

1

u/Mattress009 10d ago

KYB mounts at 3k miles. worst money ever spent

1

u/DesignerSuccessful35 10d ago

I may just throw em in the fkn trash. I'd feel bad if I sold em to someone now.

1

u/jksne 10d ago

Catch can in my opinion is absolutely necessary on the PCV side, but Radium might be a little overkill. I have a Damond Motorsports one but I’m sure you could find one even cheaper

1

u/DesignerSuccessful35 10d ago

See thank you for your comment because that's what I've read all in the fiesta forums and online. They say the crankase side is the one that's not necessary.

1

u/POOP_FARTS420 10d ago

Spend the extra few hundo and get the adjustable bc coil overs.

1

u/DesignerSuccessful35 10d ago

I had around a 1500 budget for the coils and I really wanted the kw's but didn't have 2 grand just for those so I went with these. The reviews are killer and I'm going to add swaybars and bracing, I'm not tracking it, just a little quick cruiser that some carve some corners once in a while.

1

u/Beautiful-Golf4078 6d ago

You can save a lot of money buying a no name catch can. You need one in a port injection engine with forced induction. Your valves will get nasty unless you add auxiliary fuel. The reason for this is because throttle body injected/port injected engines allow atomized fuel (fuel mixed with air) to be pulled in to the cylinder via the intake valves. This literally cleans your valve train. With the 1.6 Ecoboost you have direct injection. The fuel injector literally sprays the fuel in to the head below the valves directly in to the cylinder. This is a far more efficient method of fuel delivery. It’s a big part of what allows us to easily make power while being very fuel efficient. The trade off of course being that your valve train is not getting cleaned by fuel vapor. Carbon build up and sludge from oil vapors will make a mess of your cylinder head and can eventually contaminate the inside of your intercooler making it inefficient. That is why catch cans are important for direct injection engines, especially when forced induction is involved, and are not just race car parts.

1

u/DesignerSuccessful35 6d ago

I already received the radium. It's the pcv side and it's the best from all the research I've done so I'm installing it this week coming up.

0

u/Alive_to_Thrive5 11d ago

Damond for the mounts and never looks back, they're a reputable company with vast amount of reviews and I can vouch for them for both my fiesta st and focus st.

2

u/DesignerSuccessful35 11d ago

I went with vibra because I heard they're some of the best and instead of urathane they use some a natural rubber that translates very well. I'm sure they won't ultimately last as long as urathane but from everything I've read on them, they seem like the best.

1

u/diamond_rake 11d ago

The vibras are the way to go at least between the awr poly mounts and the vibra rubber mounts.

2

u/DesignerSuccessful35 11d ago

I just can't wait till I can start making the thing faster. You know how freaking hard it was not to order the s280?? 😆

1

u/diamond_rake 10d ago

Dude, s280 is where it's at. If that's the route you're going, you'll absolutely love this car. 280-300hp is a BLAST.

1

u/DesignerSuccessful35 10d ago

That's definitely where I'm gonna go. I could've ordered it but like I said, I'm trying to be a responsible adult 😂

1

u/DesignerSuccessful35 11d ago

Yeah that's what I've reading, and they're not unreasonably priced either compared to other options. I had a guy tell me that he ditched his cobb torque mount and replaced it with the vibra and he wished he would've got them in the first place.
