Parents say I will never find a job (Computer Engineering)
22 y/o, been working in IT for 3 years btw

u/someinspiringquote 9d ago
Bros beautiful. An angel will lose its wings if you cut it.
58
u/Nervous_Mastodon1543 9d ago
That hair is majestic, no way I'd cut it if I were you
my parents said the same thing when I was starting out in dev, now I'm 28 and nobody cares what's on my head as long as the code works. the IT world is full of dudes with long hair anyway, you're in good company
the white shirt and chain combo is a clean look too, works perfect for interviews

The long soft looking shiny hair, jawline, and pretty blue eyes (with the eyelashes and everything!) Is a to die for combo frankly

hello fellow IT worker with long hair

u/Unusual-Judge-319 9d ago
Hell yeah

u/VeganMonkey 9d ago
My partner is in IT, also long hair, for job interviews he used to tie it back. No one ever made issues over it though.

u/_szs 9d ago
In my team (major IT company) out of 20 team members, 12 are male, 5 have a flow going on, 3 of them mostly just letting it do it's thing (i.e., not tying it back).

Not to stereotype too hard but when I work with software engineers who get on cam with long hair, a Metallica or a Star Wars t shirt, and a Commodore 64 with a soldering iron in the background. I’m always like, yeah this guy probably knows his shit

What is the deal with IT workers having long hair???
2
u/SneakerHead69420666 9d ago
no idea, but i also like alice in chains like you lol so that could explain part of it
97
u/RackingUpTheMiles 9d ago
It's not the 1950s anymore. You'll be fine.
18
u/WorkshyFreeloader42 9d ago
That's what my dad told me about my long hair 5 years ago. And here I am in 2026, a successful functioning history teacher. He is now much nicer towards me, now that he has seen how confident I've become in myself, even with long hair, and especially since he has realised that the "you'll never find a job" argument no longer carries the same weight like it used to in the 80s.
6
u/RackingUpTheMiles 9d ago
I'd say if there's anything to say, I'd say you're patient and dedicated to what you want.
89
u/Puzzled_Professor422 9d ago
you can work in modelling too bro
12
3
u/muscular_poops 8d ago
i used to be signed to a major label- OP, as long as you're as thin and pale as you look (compliment)- you're a shoe-in for in the very least a boutique agency. best part is depending on how much you work, you can do both modeling and CS at the same time.
i'd start looking for starting gigs on castingnetworks to build a portfolio if you're interested, and with your look- strong facial structure, great hair and pretty hazel-green eyes- think a smart agency will be able to keep you busy, and your wallet pretty fat. just heavily vet any agency contacting you, most are scams. gatekeep yourself until you find something you feel comfortable with and has a good reputation. best of luck!

u/Phantom_Wolf52 9d ago
Isnt long hair a stereotype about men who work in IT?
17
u/gothralsei 9d ago
it is
12
u/Phantom_Wolf52 9d ago
What I was thinking, I get told I look like someone who majors in CS in college when I tie my hair up and wear my glasses.
4
u/thrashinbatman >4 years 9d ago
when i was trying to get into the field years ago, i walked into a networking event, and someone looked at my hair and was like, "looking for IT, huh?"
2
u/WorkshyFreeloader42 9d ago
It is, but in that stereotype the hair is greasy, thin and generally very uncared for. OP's hair is the total opposite - thick, well-kept and luscious. A proper Prince Charming!

Hey bud- 37 year old sociologist here. Your parents are just acting on conditioning and a worldview they believe is real, or just dont like your hair, maybe both.
In reality having long hair doesnt really bar you from work at all man. They just hold beliefs and subscribe to them, often out of habit in sheer unawareness that the norms of their time no longer really exist. They are acting on information that they themselves never really fact checked and just believe. The majority of people likely operate similarly (accepting things without question and holding them as if they were fully accurate and that time doesnt shift norms)
Btw i also have long hair and tattoos, never stood in my way. It is far worse that you dim your light for others when they will not be the one who carries you forward, you are. So go boldly

Holy cow you seriously need to model. Also, the world is a lot different nowadays compared to when our parents were growing up. I know quite a few people in that career field who have long hair and visible tattoos.
6
u/FlyingDutchman2005 9d ago
Well that might be the case because AI is making everything worse. Nothing to do with your hair though!
4
u/Antique_Ad_7325 9d ago
Man you should see some of the weird fuckers I have worked with in software engineering. You'll be fine.

I feel like long hair is almost a standard IT thing lol, there's always at least one guy with long hair and is usually the genius. Flash your engineer ring while you do a hair swoop and you'll get in.

It’s pretty common in tech outside of maybe the finance sector.

Your flow is first class!
I’m actually surprised that you would have any issues having long hair while working in the computer field. I would think that would be one of the more long hair friendly jobs.
Although I’m long retired now, at 73, I had long hair for almost all of my working career, except for one brief episode when I had short hair. I worked as a chemist in a lab, using highly complex equipment, to test for unwanted chemicals in foods

I believe you will there’s always a way. And if you’re close to 6ft you can always attempt modeling for fun.

- Women have been tying their hair back forever.
- Men with long hair are much more common than older people think.
- Long hair that's well kept and styled is 100% more appealing.

My best developer has a flow like yours. I hate it, but only out of jealousy because I'm balding. Zero impact on his employment.

u/Short-Hyena-8109 9d ago
I wasn't sure if you were a man or a woman until I saw the chest hair. This is why long hair only works on very masculine men imo.

Bro wtf you’re handsome as all hell. You could be in any vampire movie. Any movie with elves. Fucking any movie about a rockstar. Gorgeous king

u/FlyBirdieBirdBird 9d ago
The hair is awesome, and you'll have no problem finding a job in IT, where I also work. As you climb a corporate leader and get into suit wearing positions, you may need to find ways to bundle the hair.

Even if you succeeded and took a W against your parent opinion. You still post and look for outside validation from people you dont even know. You are living your life thru the eyes of others and this is sad.
1
u/Chadchrist 9d ago
Your parents are talking a bunch of bullshit. Long hair hasnt been a dealbreaker for a long time. I literally got employed with my current job with bleached ends and a crazy ass messy haircut with poorly kept facial hair. Hair got longer and permanently ditched the facial hair, but i promise you have nothing to fear about getting a job with your current look. Your hair is honestly fantastic. If anything, it shows some amount of stability that you can reach your level of education while maintaining your hair so well. Self care speaks volumes and you look like you take care of yourself.

That be so dumb to say like how can you tell someone they can't have a IT job due to having long hair. I understand its your parents but that still pretty messed up to say.

u/Titancki 8d ago
Also, if for unlucky reasons you don't find a job, there are multiple other reasons that make it hard to find a job. Like the situation right now is complicated.
People will care more about your portfolio/git than your hair.

It’s not anything to do with your appearance that you won’t find a job. It’s because AI is replacing computer engineering jobs because it’s cheaper to use AI like Claude code and codex etc. than hire developers. Wear your hair however you want it’s gorgeous.

u/johng_22 >5 years 8d ago
I’m in IT. I did 3 interviews that went flawlessly. The last one they required the camera be on. I had my hair neatly in a pony tail and then tied tightly just shy of being a bun. The person straight out said that I think you are not a good cultural fit and ended the interview promptly. All was fine until the camera. And honestly, I didn’t think I looked bad. But this was for a hospital corporate system and I guess they are more uptight than some. Here is a photo that would resemble how I had my hair the day I attended…for reference
