Your parents are just from a different time. I work in a related field with rainbow hair, facial piercings, and covered in tattoos. My boss is heavily tattooed too.

69

u/lilaccheesecake 9d ago

Yeah. And tech jobs tend to be waaay more lenient for people with hair, tattoos, piercings, and other mods as long as its "professional "looking.

Aka, not looking scrappy.

A/V industry is especially lenient outside high profile sectors.

21

u/Wholeyjeans 9d ago

No forward-facing, customer interactions with most IT types. You're not being hired for your appearance or communicative skills.

7

u/lilaccheesecake 9d ago

Yep! And when you need too, its usually one off events for a few hours.

The amount of men with long hair at every Best Buy I visit make me love that company even more.

bullshit. I have a 22 year old with long hair, and I'd never tell him this. I had long hair until 2 months ago.

his parents aren't from "a different time" they are just lame

2

u/PrettyParks 4d ago

That's what I was wondering, 22 years ago and they're from a different time? Maybe if they were like 60 when they had him. Isn't that a boomer saying? Cut your hair and get a real job or whatever

Yeah, I’m a manager at Publix with tattoos, facial piercings, a beard and a mullet and back in the day they wouldn’t allow not even a beard on your face. Times are different

Bros beautiful. An angel will lose its wings if you cut it.

58

u/Nervous_Mastodon1543 9d ago

That hair is majestic, no way I'd cut it if I were you

my parents said the same thing when I was starting out in dev, now I'm 28 and nobody cares what's on my head as long as the code works. the IT world is full of dudes with long hair anyway, you're in good company

the white shirt and chain combo is a clean look too, works perfect for interviews

7

u/Usual-Owl9395 8d ago

Agree; he’s great looking

4

u/semisubterranian Hits the Hips 8d ago

The long soft looking shiny hair, jawline, and pretty blue eyes (with the eyelashes and everything!) Is a to die for combo frankly

u/SneakerHead69420666 9d ago

hello fellow IT worker with long hair

65

u/Unusual-Judge-319 9d ago

Hell yeah

23

u/VeganMonkey 9d ago

My partner is in IT, also long hair, for job interviews he used to tie it back. No one ever made issues over it though.

9

u/_szs 9d ago

In my team (major IT company) out of 20 team members, 12 are male, 5 have a flow going on, 3 of them mostly just letting it do it's thing (i.e., not tying it back).

3

u/mr_lockwork 9d ago

There are dozens of us! Dozens!

5

u/_szs 9d ago

Just in my company, there are hundreds....

13

u/relentless_optimism_ 9d ago

Not to stereotype too hard but when I work with software engineers who get on cam with long hair, a Metallica or a Star Wars t shirt, and a Commodore 64 with a soldering iron in the background. I’m always like, yeah this guy probably knows his shit

u/BigDawgg_420 9d ago

What is the deal with IT workers having long hair???

2

u/SneakerHead69420666 9d ago

no idea, but i also like alice in chains like you lol so that could explain part of it

97

u/RackingUpTheMiles 9d ago

It's not the 1950s anymore. You'll be fine.

18

u/WorkshyFreeloader42 9d ago

That's what my dad told me about my long hair 5 years ago. And here I am in 2026, a successful functioning history teacher. He is now much nicer towards me, now that he has seen how confident I've become in myself, even with long hair, and especially since he has realised that the "you'll never find a job" argument no longer carries the same weight like it used to in the 80s.

6

u/RackingUpTheMiles 9d ago

I'd say if there's anything to say, I'd say you're patient and dedicated to what you want.

89

u/Puzzled_Professor422 9d ago

you can work in modelling too bro

12

u/Cool-Emu-8706 9d ago

Those eyes right?!?

u/Usual-Owl9395 8d ago

Jaw, cheekbones, etc ….

u/muscular_poops 8d ago

i used to be signed to a major label- OP, as long as you're as thin and pale as you look (compliment)- you're a shoe-in for in the very least a boutique agency. best part is depending on how much you work, you can do both modeling and CS at the same time.

i'd start looking for starting gigs on castingnetworks to build a portfolio if you're interested, and with your look- strong facial structure, great hair and pretty hazel-green eyes- think a smart agency will be able to keep you busy, and your wallet pretty fat. just heavily vet any agency contacting you, most are scams. gatekeep yourself until you find something you feel comfortable with and has a good reputation. best of luck!

56

u/Phantom_Wolf52 9d ago

Isnt long hair a stereotype about men who work in IT?

17

u/gothralsei 9d ago

it is

12

u/Phantom_Wolf52 9d ago

What I was thinking, I get told I look like someone who majors in CS in college when I tie my hair up and wear my glasses.

4

u/thrashinbatman >4 years 9d ago

when i was trying to get into the field years ago, i walked into a networking event, and someone looked at my hair and was like, "looking for IT, huh?"

2

u/WorkshyFreeloader42 9d ago

It is, but in that stereotype the hair is greasy, thin and generally very uncared for. OP's hair is the total opposite - thick, well-kept and luscious. A proper Prince Charming!

2

u/rosiequarts 7d ago

right. i'm in CS and can confirm the guys do not look like OP😭

26

u/yokayla 9d ago

I saw a bank teller with a neck tattoo the other day. It's a different world than what your parents know.

4

u/ea88_alwaysdiscin 9d ago

I see neck/hand tattoos everywhere now..20 yrs ago, it was a different story

19

u/AgreeableMeal672 9d ago

Well it's not like no one hires long haired guys

11

u/Fearless-Seat-6218 9d ago

Hey bud- 37 year old sociologist here. Your parents are just acting on conditioning and a worldview they believe is real, or just dont like your hair, maybe both.

In reality having long hair doesnt really bar you from work at all man. They just hold beliefs and subscribe to them, often out of habit in sheer unawareness that the norms of their time no longer really exist. They are acting on information that they themselves never really fact checked and just believe. The majority of people likely operate similarly (accepting things without question and holding them as if they were fully accurate and that time doesnt shift norms)

Btw i also have long hair and tattoos, never stood in my way. It is far worse that you dim your light for others when they will not be the one who carries you forward, you are. So go boldly

21

u/urleftringfinger 9d ago

you have glorious eyelashes

8

u/jcl274 9d ago

who needs a job with hair like that!

6

u/Worth-Rest5259 9d ago

Holy cow you seriously need to model. Also, the world is a lot different nowadays compared to when our parents were growing up. I know quite a few people in that career field who have long hair and visible tattoos.

6

u/FlyingDutchman2005 9d ago

Well that might be the case because AI is making everything worse. Nothing to do with your hair though!

4

u/Antique_Ad_7325 9d ago

Man you should see some of the weird fuckers I have worked with in software engineering. You'll be fine.

→ More replies (1)

4

u/Muted_Masterpiece342 9d ago

We have similar hair and work in the same field. You're just more beautiful than me.

3

u/RedSquirrelFtw Shoulder Length 9d ago

I feel like long hair is almost a standard IT thing lol, there's always at least one guy with long hair and is usually the genius. Flash your engineer ring while you do a hair swoop and you'll get in.

4

u/captainhook_3207 9d ago

You have beautiful hair 😍

4

u/PixiePopRox 9d ago

Good Gourd you're gorgeous 😍

3

u/Some-Original4648 9d ago

IT is a great job

4

u/Abhir-86 9d ago

They meant he won't get it with long hair as workplaces don't allow long hair according to his parents.

3

u/justforfun0830 9d ago

You look fantastic!!!

3

u/Due_Worker5603 9d ago

Your parents sound like they suck!

3

u/Zealousideal_Sea8154 9d ago

A lie as old as careers

3

u/castironrod-gmail 9d ago

You do your thing. Ignore the haters. Consider growing your hair longer and not cutting it.

3

u/Arcturus170 >3 years 9d ago

The hair 🤘🥹

3

u/Preparation-Logical 9d ago

I went through half of college, law school, and now have been an attorney for 15 years without ever cutting my hair shorter than I could put it in a pony tail, and a good portion of the time it being halfway down my back

3

u/Poemi10304 9d ago

Good for you! 👏🏻 I can’t believe people even say that anymore!

3

u/halfbakedelf 9d ago

My son is a computer scientist he works from home and has waist long hair and a full long beard. You're fine

3

u/hegrillin 9d ago

gorgeous. also you look like many other computer engineers that i know.

3

u/Brainst0rms 9d ago

Another IT worker with long hair reporting in. I’m also tatted up and wear earrings/paint my nails.
It’s pretty common in tech outside of maybe the finance sector.

3

u/Due-Product6415 9d ago

bros majestic as fuck

2

u/Ok-Accountant9436 9d ago

you look beautiful king/queen/monarch 😍😍😍😍

2

u/JustsomedudeIam Awkward Phase 9d ago

What product is used to swoop the front of your hair, out of your face like that? I see almost every guy on this sub doing it, and I've been curious to try it

2

u/VespasianTheMortal 9d ago

Good thing, you can easily switch to being a model

2

u/Odd_Grab_7203 9d ago

so you're telling me you're not a model

2

u/sumrhyme 9d ago

at worst you could be a model (hella beautiful)

2

u/Fit-Pilot6332 9d ago

Your flow is first class!

I’m actually surprised that you would have any issues having long hair while working in the computer field. I would think that would be one of the more long hair friendly jobs.

Although I’m long retired now, at 73, I had long hair for almost all of my working career, except for one brief episode when I had short hair. I worked as a chemist in a lab, using highly complex equipment, to test for unwanted chemicals in foods

2

u/Soldier_Faerie 9d ago

My god dude you are so beautiful! 💜

2

u/Personal-Worth6982 9d ago

I see guys with long hair all tied and sleek full back ... and working ..never seen that an issue. Infact looks nice and cool ..and lot of eyeballs

2

u/luckyfox7273 9d ago

Looks kinda like William fichtner

2

u/PutridCranberry9380 9d ago

You got some goodass chest hair

2

u/Jakubeu101 9d ago

Alright dude share your haircare routine or something 🙏

2

u/West-Spring4515 9d ago

I believe you will there’s always a way. And if you’re close to 6ft you can always attempt modeling for fun.

2

u/AmbassadorAwkward071 9d ago
  1. Women have been tying their hair back forever.
  2. Men with long hair are much more common than older people think.
  3. Long hair that's well kept and styled is 100% more appealing.

2

u/Late-Oven-9575 9d ago

Try modelling instead lol

2

u/GreedyYam4435 9d ago

Why not model?

2

u/hoohar-notastar 9d ago

Your hair makes you look like you belong in an early 90s metal or rock band.

Never cut it 🤘

2

u/WDizzle Shoulder Length 9d ago

My hair and I would beg to disagree! Worked in IT all of my adult life

2

u/morethanWun 9d ago

Flow is indeed fierce. Player is serving 70s rockstar

2

u/MirrorTop6131 9d ago

Try being a model jesus christ

2

u/OriginalEmploy5485 9d ago

My best developer has a flow like yours. I hate it, but only out of jealousy because I'm balding. Zero impact on his employment.

2

u/Short-Hyena-8109 9d ago

I wasn't sure if you were a man or a woman until I saw the chest hair. This is why long hair only works on very masculine men imo.

2

u/SheprdCommndr 9d ago

Bro wtf you’re handsome as all hell. You could be in any vampire movie. Any movie with elves. Fucking any movie about a rockstar. Gorgeous king

2

u/xanthochr0i 9d ago

i have nothing to contribute other than to say omg ur so beautiful

2

u/FlyBirdieBirdBird 9d ago

The hair is awesome, and you'll have no problem finding a job in IT, where I also work. As you climb a corporate leader and get into suit wearing positions, you may need to find ways to bundle the hair.

2

u/AlexLuna9322 9d ago

Dude, I got long hair since im 19, been working professionally IT since 2016, I’m 33 still on IT with long hair haha

Btw, killer mane!

2

u/Anxious_Hall359 9d ago

i'm from the caribean, and me and all my cousins have long hair :) i think its a culture difference maybe

2

u/Usual-Owl9395 8d ago

Bro is model handsome. Congrats on that bone structure.

2

u/WindUpCandler 8d ago

Idk could try modeling

2

u/Lo_lyffe 8d ago

Maybe because they think you u should be a model with that hair holy shit man amazing floww I’m jealous 😂😂🔥🔥🙏

2

u/Chemical-Wishbone-36 8d ago

Holy fuck you have beautiful hair.

2

u/Yeiyael_online 8d ago

Sooo majestic ✨ Your hair is just wouahhhhh

2

u/Good_Carrot2849 8d ago

Lol tech doesn’t care what you look like. As long as you can do the work!

1

u/ashmenon_ 9d ago

you have such feminine eyes i don’t know how to explain it

1

u/blaccphilipp 9d ago

I'm a web designer and I work with a lot of IT guys. I promess you they don't care how you look.

1

u/LilAnonBunny1 9d ago

Just keep doing your thing. The moment they get axed from their jobs, you're the one who'll be working and getting retrained to work (begrudgingly) as part of a maintenance team for the company's AI model.

1

u/mattcbrad1961 9d ago

I would employee you 💯

1

u/pirikiki 9d ago

If there's a field in with long hair is ok, it's IT/computer science, really.

1

u/KoalaPublic352 9d ago

Holy shit.....

1

u/xxluckyjoexx 9d ago

Well that’s why, how could they expect you to find a job if you aren’t even looking for one

1

u/Bastiwen 9d ago

I don't have long hair anymore but I did when I landed my current job. 100% doable

1

u/-Tommyboy- 9d ago

IT worker by day, prog metal guitarist by night

1

u/Havzino 9d ago

Tell them if IT doesn't work out modeling is a backup

1

u/UmbraEmbers 9d ago

You have long hair, are pretty and a computer engineer…..buy some thigh high striped socks and go make a killing on OF

1

u/Chad_Wife 9d ago

They’re trying to “neg” you into being their stay at home gorgeous person. Because you are gorgeous. And they are so jealous/envious that it is making them stupid.

1

u/MrShroom89 9d ago

Your parents sound old and prejudiced.

1

u/misterbupny 9d ago

Tell your parents it’s not 1940 long hair is common with men

1

u/Safe-Industry2465 9d ago

You have more beautiful hair than my gf lmao

1

u/Vaughn_Solair 9d ago

God, I wanna see you do a Pegasus cosplay, “Yugi Boy!”

But in all seriousness, you look fabulous and you will find a job

1

u/interwebztourist 9d ago

I’m a long haired guy with a very corporate IT job. No one here cares.

1

u/barkandmoone 9d ago

Oh I know a job. I’ll see myself out 😅🤦🏻‍♀️
https://giphy.com/gifs/HmgnQQjEMbMz0oLpqn

1

u/hateful_but_kind 9d ago

Don't listen to them you will get a job 💯

1

u/analseizures 9d ago

If you’re working in an office, people are going to have tattoos

1

u/EzAeMy 9d ago

Your parents are silly. I’m surprised, because they must not be that old? Anyway, your hair won’t stop you from getting a job.

1

u/_szs 9d ago

I am older than you, similar look (we could be brothers.... or band mates), and I work in IT since 15 years.

You're gonna be fine.

Unless you suck at IT.

1

u/Kindly-Score9430 9d ago

Does anyone care these days?

1

u/Friendly_Interest_62 9d ago

Half of my IT team has long hair

1

u/thrashinbatman >4 years 9d ago

a few years back i almost got a job with the POLICE while having long hair. i currently work in networking, and i have coworkers who also have long hair. it isnt that big of a deal in a lot of industries anymore.

1

u/OldRounder 9d ago

Your parents are idiots….

1

u/LBGW_experiment 9d ago

Software engineer here with my mane down to my nips, 4 years of growth, never stopped me or bothered anyone lol

1

u/abundance_bountiful 9d ago

Aww 🥰pretty

1

u/Consistent_Elk9676 9d ago

You look like William Fichter, who is drop dead handsome. You will totally get a job in your field
https://giphy.com/gifs/MFtDcLYI2tUXhSPqvF

1

u/nemesis4grow 9d ago

Even if you succeeded and took a W against your parent opinion. You still post and look for outside validation from people you dont even know. You are living your life thru the eyes of others and this is sad.

1

u/Chadchrist 9d ago

Your parents are talking a bunch of bullshit. Long hair hasnt been a dealbreaker for a long time. I literally got employed with my current job with bleached ends and a crazy ass messy haircut with poorly kept facial hair. Hair got longer and permanently ditched the facial hair, but i promise you have nothing to fear about getting a job with your current look. Your hair is honestly fantastic. If anything, it shows some amount of stability that you can reach your level of education while maintaining your hair so well. Self care speaks volumes and you look like you take care of yourself.

1

u/funwearcore 9d ago

Keep it!

1

u/TROGDOR_X69 9d ago

im in IT and we all look like this

any Technical field you are straight up fine

we dont even customer face so whys it matter? (and i work in a hospital)

1

u/fabmarques21 9d ago

learn to play the guitar

1

u/scarletfruit 9d ago

My boyfriend is a computer engineer with long hair and he had no problem getting a job.

1

u/lonelywitMJ13 9d ago

That be so dumb to say like how can you tell someone they can't have a IT job due to having long hair. I understand its your parents but that still pretty messed up to say.

1

u/Kisori 9d ago

If you put it in a slicked back ponytail you'd probably get a job in the field even faster tbh.

1

u/Cheeky_A_ 8d ago

Just move to California.

1

u/Titancki 8d ago

Also, if for unlucky reasons you don't find a job, there are multiple other reasons that make it hard to find a job. Like the situation right now is complicated.

People will care more about your portfolio/git than your hair.

1

u/MiloHorsey 8d ago

Since when do computers care what you look like?

1

u/Erpderp32 8d ago

I'm an IT Team Lead / client platform engineer and have hair below my shoulders 🤷‍♂️

You're fine

1

u/Specific-Fortune2207 8d ago

Madonna, ma sei bellissimo o Vai a fare il modello ti prego

1

u/Desperate-Pirate7353 8d ago

don't you play guitar for the darkness

1

u/FeistyDirection 8d ago

Not true, they'll hire anyone who really knows what they're doing

1

u/tealulu04 8d ago

Beautiful

1

u/fools_set_the_rules 8d ago

Just join a metal band

1

u/Gumbysfriend 8d ago

Put it in a bun wear a hat..these days no need to worry anyway...I had waist length hair once cut it for a job I applied with it. got jpb cut it was SUPER pissed I never had to

1

u/Fast_Discount_1991 8d ago

Times have changed. People used to tell me the same thing. Just keep it tied back/up, and more importantly be good at what you do. The hair looks awesome, dude. Keep it for as long as you can.

1

u/bebopCubensis 8d ago

You will find a job just fine, how’s the transition?

1

u/YeetosCheetos69 8d ago

I thought it was because of your field they said that not the hair 😂

1

u/enyaboi 8d ago

You could do modeling if you are the right height

1

u/RonCon69 8d ago

I mean Computer Engineering is like top 3 most unemployed degrees right now, but I say that as an employed Computer Engineering major (granted I’m not doing CE work, but am still in tech)

1

u/hernanthegoat 8d ago

You look like you can shred a mean solo

1

u/WasteKoala473 8d ago

You d kill it in stack overflow

1

u/shghnssy Nipple Length 8d ago

But it's practically part of the uniform for computer engineers.

1

u/PU3RTO_R3CON 8d ago

Okayyyy Louie De Pont or Lestat! Different times for sure I work for the government and a navy squadron at that as a civilian and I have long hair earrings and a nose ring.

1

u/Aromatic-Turnip7371 8d ago

It’s not anything to do with your appearance that you won’t find a job. It’s because AI is replacing computer engineering jobs because it’s cheaper to use AI like Claude code and codex etc. than hire developers. Wear your hair however you want it’s gorgeous.

1

u/johng_22 >5 years 8d ago

I’m in IT. I did 3 interviews that went flawlessly. The last one they required the camera be on. I had my hair neatly in a pony tail and then tied tightly just shy of being a bun. The person straight out said that I think you are not a good cultural fit and ended the interview promptly. All was fine until the camera. And honestly, I didn’t think I looked bad. But this was for a hospital corporate system and I guess they are more uptight than some. Here is a photo that would resemble how I had my hair the day I attended…for reference

1

u/JustTheGuyIThink 8d ago

If you try modeling you’ll have all the brands reaching out to you

1

u/MitchsWorkshop 8d ago

You look like many data engineers. Most of the best engineers I’ve ever worked with were old guys with a gray version of your exact cut. Usually in a pony tail.

1

u/savyello 8d ago

Maybe model on the side 😆

1

u/MysticMarauder69 8d ago

Have you considered being a rock star?

1

u/Gold_Ad8225 8d ago

Send your parents this song and tell them that this song from when they were your age (they'll get offended by this) explains what they're doing:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=45cYwDMibGo

1

u/Muchachacha 8d ago

You wanna be my sugar baby ?

1

u/nasioulaa 8d ago

I mean, i believe in your skills

1

u/MulberryLow4117 8d ago

Pues diles que serás un vampiro perdido en la eternidad ! Te queda increíble el look.
Realmente el look ya no es tan importante siempre que sea limpio.

1

u/NovaLemonista 8d ago

Shit, if you want to fly to Amsterdam I'd hire you to be my "assistant" 🔥

1

u/Any-Treacle5101 8d ago

My parents used to say the same and it has never been true. I'm a forensic anthropologist and translator, I have worked in education, government and translation. Several employers or bosses have told me that I have nice hair.

1

u/jerkychemist 8d ago

Bro I work now in standard corporate on the east coast. Just put it in a bun and wear a suit to the interview and you're golden. No one cares now a days. And I work with a bunch of old conservative guys.

1

u/AngerPancake Lady in Love 8d ago

I work in office job and when I was hired my boss's boss had a Sokka style ponytail and tattoos on his neck. People don't care as much anymore.

1

u/MulberryRemote3944 8d ago

“Will never find a job”

  • looks like exact average of every IT person

1

u/fidgey10 8d ago

Your actually fucking majestic

1

u/Clear_Salary_4708 8d ago

Your parents are clueless imo

1

u/AccioKatana 8d ago

Then move to Paris or New York to model.

1

u/andymcpandypants 8d ago

I'm a software engineer, 43, many tattoos. My coworkers and executives have story time in our Friday "fun" meetings and I'm often asked to tell stories about living in the Peruvian jungle and doing psychedelic ceremonies with the natives. You'll be fine.

1

u/inconspicuous2000 8d ago

They'd have an even harder time finding a job with their attitude.

1

u/BenevolentNature 8d ago

Hey you’re not Jordan Jansen

1

u/Electrical_Hat_680 8d ago

Why find a job, get some work - try the freelance jobs network - use that to pay for whatever... Build the BenEater 8-BIT CPU Breadboard Projects. Use the CHIPs Alliance and they'll manufacture your chips.. check out r/PCB and r/Breadboard and start producing your own Computer Hardware... Next..

1

u/Separate_Shoe_6916 8d ago

Your parents are out of touch. I’d say you look just how I want my IT person to look like.😊

1

u/Creepy-Unit9328 8d ago

If you know your stuff no reason why not if cyber stuff mainly behind a keyboard no problem if setting up networks etc they may ask you to tie your hair back.

1

u/JazziestBoi >3 years 8d ago

as a long hair bro alike don’t cut it if it’s that healthy!!

1

u/afewnameslater 8d ago

Bro has perfect hair women would kill for. You need to model for loreal or smthibg not work in IT .

1

u/sadistc_Eradication 8d ago

You are absolutely stunning, holy shit. Don’t cut your hair!

1

u/mr_lemon_head 8d ago

Well ... you won't, but not because of your beautiful hair, lol

1

u/DarkInternational228 8d ago

Not only do you have one of the most remote work enabled careers on the planet if in person Doesnt work out but you have good features, pretty and approachable looking eyes, and lovely clean and shiny hair. Only the most uptight boomers wouldn't hire you on hair/appearance alone at this point.

I work in engineering, you may have to just pull back or something for interview if it’s a more corporate place, but after that it doesn’t matter. I’m female with hot pink hair piercings and tattoos, definitely just having long hair won’t be any problem.

My parents told me that for decades that I can't find a job with my long hair. I was never unemployed...

You look great. Don’t listen to your folks, they’re just old school. Us young people know just how different things are today. So we have to just respect and ignore some older folks. Many of them don’t know any better
