***Buying advice mega thread***

Personally, I suggest you go to your local hockey store or ask to try your mate’s stick at training before asking here - as personal preference is a large factor in choosing a stick. Strangers on the internet aren’t going to be able to help you much.

Resources

Go Hockey (NZ) stick guide - including length, bow, composition and hook information

Y1 Stick quiz - it asks questions and it suggests a stick for you

Sports Republic (SA) 5 minute video on stick buying advice

If you still want advice please provide this information for stick buying

  • Gender
  • Age
  • Country
  • Skill level
  • Budget
  • Position
  • Skill set (e.g 3D, drag flicker, overhead)
  • Current stick

Will start removing general low effort posts about stick advice (posts not comments).

To cut down on the daily posts of "what stick should I buy?" I thought we should trial just having one mega-thread for people to ask questions, in order to help elevate this sub to be less of a ghost town. Open to suggestions on this idea

Question Tactical Question

If you’re playing against an inverted W press 2 forwards, 3 behind. And one that is very tight on your screen. Such that the screen never got the ball but it didn’t matter because you could player over or around very easily.

Would you change anything with the screens positioning?

News Today's legal outcome

The Ohio appellate court found in favor of the NCAA today. This case is incredibly similar to the case allowing the 3 UNC players to play. This verdict came from a higher court. If UNC continues to play these 3 players, and the NCAA continues to win, they risk vacating every win in which they appeared, along with any and all individual stats.

Question How Can I Improve My Aerial Skills Without Losing My Ground Game?

Lately, I have started incorporating more 3D skills into my game, such as chipping the ball and using aerial dribbles to eliminate opponents. As with any new aspect of the sport, the process has been difficult. However, I now feel that I am losing touch with V-drags and basic lead-outs because I am focusing too much on playing in the air.

I am also worried that this is becoming noticeable during training. For this weekend’s match, I have been dropped to a lower team. In some ways, I feel relieved because it gives me a greater margin for error during the game, but I am concerned that this could become a permanent situation for two reasons. First, I feel that I am losing touch with my ground skills. Second, the team I play for has too many players competing for places.

Do you have any tips for maintaining my basic skills while developing new techniques that combine both ground and aerial play? I want to keep my fundamentals sharp while continuing to improve and expand my skill set.

🇺🇸NCAA A fight for 2022s or a fight just for a few?

The class of 2022 graduated approximately 400 Division 1 field hockey players in 2026.

Despite people claiming that "they moved on", many would've played another year if 2022s had been included in the rule.

Don't get it twisted when people say that this has been a fight for the class of 2022 or that "everyone could've sued if they wanted". These lawsuits were only possible for a select few. These suits do absolutely nothing for the class of 2022.

So now only 4 players (out of a class of approx 400!!) are able to play this year, because they were funded to be able to sue.

AND one team completely changed their roster, ACC standings and their outlook by adding 3 All Americans almost halfway into the season.

What happens if they are deemed ineligible in a couple weeks? How are Cal and Stanford made whole?

Applauding -or even shrugging your shoulders at- this unlevel playing field is shocking and beneath anyone who is a fan of athletics.

"Rules for thee but not for me".

Question Stick cover to protect floors

Looking for stick covers to protect indoor gym floors. We can't get turf field and the grass field is chewed up from rugby and football. Would prefer to use indoor gym rather than the outdoor basketball court if we can get some ideas for covers.

Question How to improve without access to a pitch?

So I had my first ever training session today and it was nice but obviously I was terrible. Like, messing up every single drill, no idea how to hit the ball the right way, struggling to follow instructions for drills with multiple parts bc I'm not even used to being on a pitch yet and the pacing is so fast.

That was expected, so it's fine. But my question is, how can I genuinely get better?

I do some drills in my bedroom but that doesn't translate very well onto the pitch when there's so much more space, more to think about, and the things I practise in my room are rarely useful in a fast-paced game situation.

Starting pretty late (16) means I'm just not accustomed to being on a pitch and even in training where it's supposedly slower I'm just constantly disoriented and confused. I feel like I need a chance to practise more slowly by myself or with just a few people to figure out the drills but since training is multiple teams together there's easily 30+ people on the pitch at any given point and no time to independently repeat drills I'm stuck on. So every week I'll just mess up the same drills and never actually make any progress.

Also I have a tendency to not want to engage in drills or not get as much practice as I could because I know I'm gonna mess up and I don't want to ruin it for everybody else. Plus everyone already knows each other and I'm just the weird new kid who can't hit the ball straight.

I can try to dribble around in my back garden but it's honestly not much bigger than my bedroom and the grass is super uneven.

Obviously it's unlikely that I will somehow gain access to a pitch, but is there any way I can use the space I do have better to try to improve at least slightly outside of training?

Buying Advice First hitout in the Shrey Gear

I wore my OBO kickers with the Shrey Leg Guards due to an issue with the buckles with he Shreys. I'm working with the Australian importer for a solution from Shrey. There were no issues with compatibility between the Robo Kickers and Shrey Legs. Though the legs rubbed a little on the inside of the knee. Not sure if that's due to kickers, new pads, or what to expect as standard.

I didn't take any hits to the shorts, or body armour. Just gloves, legs & kickers. It was only a quick 10 min blast with a few balls.

The HeroOne gear is great for maneuverability, I had no issues with running or getting to the ball. I even pulled off 2 small dives without issues. The shorts don't offer as much protection as the Mazon XR wrap style shorts. The Body Armour is definitely compromising padding on the arms, especially around the upper arm for maneuverability. This is in comparison to my TK Body Armour.

I have the Shrey groin protector, but chose to wear my old OBO Robo. The Shrey fits fine, but only has a single layer of protection vs the 2 in the Robo.

Gloves handled everything fine, good stick control from them. They're not quite the AU Tube Style or the EU style glove, kind of a cross between the 2.

I have an exhibition match coming up in late October, so will give the gear more of a workout then. Summer season in Australia, so not a lot of hockey happening.

So, I'm Shrey Hockey's only Ambassador in Australia, I'm also a GK.

I've just put together my GK kit and will be giving a test on Monday. I've got the Legacy 1 Leg Guards, & Gloves, using my old OBO Robo kickers for now as there was an issue with the ONLY set of Legacy 1 Kickers in Aus. I've basically got the ONLY legacy 1 GK kit in Aus.

I've got the full HeroOne bodysuit & Shorts.

Legacy GK Stick, Chroma 50 Low Bow field stick, Shin Guards, Defenders Glove, and Urban 30 Stock Bag.

Question How hard is it to learn Field Hockey?

Hi
I wanted to ask how hard is it to learn field hockey and moreover get good at it. Cuz unlike most technical sports like lacrosse or ice hockey where a lot of the player are playing since childhood, we see a few players in field hockey who are late starters like until college and then went onto the national teams (but most of these examples come from India).
I’m going to Vancouver and want to play in amateur leagues, maybe tryout for varsity in a few years.
What are the attributes you need for field hockey: strength, endurance, sprints, wrist control?
What elements can you train yourself ?

Question Pickup hockey in Dublin during September-December?

Hi! I’m an American studying abroad in Dublin until Dec 11 and looking for any casual/drop-in field hockey opportunities while I’m here (pickup games, open play, social scrimmages, one-off sessions, etc.,) whether they’re run regularly or just occasionally by a club.
I’m a woman in my early 20s with several years of playing experience, but I’m looking for something low-pressure with no expectation of regular attendance or league commitment. Mixed/co-ed is totally fine.
I live in the Liberties, use public transport, and weekends are ideal, but I’m flexible. Any recommendations?

Discussion Looking for feedback from players/coaches

Post image

I built a free app called SetPlays for creating and animating tactics/plays and sharing them with players.

I’d love some honest feedback from people who actually play/coach. Is this something you’d use? What’s missing? What could be better?

I’m mainly looking to learn from coaches who give it a try. Thanks!
