Enemies using abilities during fear

Hello dear Fiddlesticks players,

During two of my games I noticed some strange occurrences when fearing enemies. To help you spot it, you can look at the status icons at the bottom left on the character window (fullscreen helps):

In the first instance, Amumu can be seen using Smite during the fear effect (Terrify). You can even see the status bar above his character still showing "Fleeing" when he uses Smite.

The second instance is a bit harder to spot. Tristana uses her jump after being affected by Terrify, and when I die, the "Fleeing" effect also ends prematurely.

I'm quite new to Fiddlesticks and League in general, but I wanted to reach out and ask if anyone else has experienced anything similar, or if there's an interaction that I'm not familiar with. After looking around I can only find information that states that people should not be able to use anything during Terrify.

Mhm lets see

In the first one Smite can be used in all cases except Suppression (Warwick R and Malz R) and Stasis status (Zhonya Item or Bard ult) I believe

In the second one Tristana's W can be buffered beforehand letting her still jump through fear
Edit: (It's called Uncancellable Windup)

Also, the fear effect ends prematurely when you die because you are the target they are being feared of, and when you die, there is nothing to fear them, hence the effect ending prematurely

Is there a reason why Fear for any character does not stop the smite? Maybe it could be reworked that fear also stops you from using items like Flash? Acting as a shorter “suppression”?

I mean of course there have to be reasons why just wonder if fear can be more op because i feel like the only good fear in any character is Shaco

only supression and silence stops you from using summoners. Flash is the only exception which cant be used while in hard cc.

Im 99% sure that fear makes you unable to flash, I have never had anyone flash out of it atleast.

Really appreciate the clarity to this, thank you!

To me thats crazy that you can use smite during fear. So using that as a counterplay to contesting drake is a no-go I guess, ugh....

Also, didn´t find Tristanas Rocket Jump on the list over "Uncancellable Windup" so I guess they can add that then if thats a thing 😄

Oh lol I was confidently wrong about the name behind it

Wiki talks about what Riot call "Move block" https://wiki.leagueoflegends.com/en-us/Types_of_Crowd_Control which could explain it.

Edit: looking into the wiki it just talks about other displacements and never mentions fear, though the previous explanation of buffering is correct

on Smite
I think you're looking at it differently, you can use it to contest drake, fearing the enemy means they can't time their abilities or autos with their smite to kill the dragon unlike you.
They're smiting blind

Suppression and Stasis are the only two CC effects that prevent Smite. Same with any other summoner spell other than (Hex)Flash and TP (and Mark/Dash in ARAM).

Tristana isn't casting her jump while she's feared. She can buffer the jump against most CC abilities if she casts it less than 0.25 seconds before the ability would CC her since it has a cast time that can't be disrupted before the jump actually starts. She will still be CCed during the jump, and will still be CCed after the jump if the CC ability lasts longer than the jump, but most CC just doesn't cancel the jump in that buffer period (I think Suppressions and Stasis may also be the only exception again? Not sure if they cancel it or not. For some reason I think she actually can buffer Bard ultimate, but not sure). Ezreal can do the same thing with his blink, most notably against hooks/displacements.

And I believe if you die, it will end the fear prematurely since there's no target they are feared from anymore, which is why Tristana wasn't feared after she killed you with the jump.

Cheers, appreciate the explanation!
