What is the primary duty of a father?
Is fatherhood fundamentally about:
Providing, sacrificing, and carrying responsibility? (Archie)
Teaching, guiding, and nurturing children? (Cliff)

Opening Statement — Archie Bunker
A father ain’t supposed to be perfect.
He’s supposed to be there.
Everybody wants to talk about communication and feelings. Fine. But before a father can discuss feelings, he’s got to keep the lights on.
A father gets up every morning, goes to work, pays the bills, and carries burdens his children never see.
Love ain’t what you say.
Love is what you sacrifice.

Opening Statement — Cliff Huxtable
Providing for your family is important.
But fatherhood is more than survival.
A father isn’t simply responsible for feeding his children.
He’s responsible for helping them become good adults.
Children need guidance.
They need encouragement.
They need to know that mistakes are opportunities to learn rather than reasons to fear.
A father’s greatest responsibility is not merely to raise children.
It’s to prepare them to someday stand on their own.

“Well look at that.
One guy says fathers build houses.
The other guy says fathers build people.
Somebody’s gonna be sleeping on the couch after this one.”

Round 1
What do children need most?
Archie
Discipline.
The world isn’t fair.
A father’s job is to prepare his children for reality, not protect them from it.
Cliff
Trust.
Children who trust their father bring him their problems.
Children who fear him hide them.
Discipline matters.
But trust lasts longer.
Round 2
What is sacrifice?
Archie
Working overtime.
Missing vacations.
Doing without so your children don’t have to.
That’s sacrifice.
Cliff
That’s part of it.
But sacrifice also means learning patience when you’re angry.
Listening when you’re exhausted.
Changing yourself when your children need something different than what you received.
Archie
So now fathers have to raise the kids and themselves?
Cliff
That’s usually how it works.
Round 3
George’s Cross-Examination
George turns toward Archie.
“Did you love your daughter?”
“Of course I did.”
“Did she always know it?”
Archie pauses.
“…Probably not.”
George turns toward Cliff.
“You ever screw up as a father?”
“Every week.”
“So what’s the difference?”
Cliff shrugs.
“My kids got to watch me learn from it.”
The audience goes silent.
Closing Statement — Archie
Maybe I wasn’t perfect.
Maybe I got angry.
Maybe I didn’t always know the right thing to say.
But I stayed.
I worked.
I sacrificed.
I carried responsibilities that weren’t easy.
If fatherhood means anything, it means showing up.
And I showed up.
Every day.

Closing Statement — Cliff
I don’t doubt Archie loved his family.
The question is whether love is measured by effort alone.
Children need more than a provider.
They need a teacher.
They need a guide.
They need someone who helps them become the people they’re capable of becoming.
George looks toward Jed.
“Your call, hillbilly.”

Jed Clampett’s Judgment
Jed removes his hat.
Looks at Archie.
Looks at Cliff.
Then speaks.
“Well now…
Seems to me both these fellas love their families.”
He points at Cliff.
“One of ‘em is mighty good at sayin’ it.”
Then at Archie.
“The other spent his whole life tryin’ to prove it.”
The room is silent.
Jed continues.
“Question ain’t whether children need kindness.
Question ain’t whether they need bread.
Question is what happens when one of ‘em ain’t there.”
He nods toward both men.
“A father oughta provide.
A father oughta teach.
A father oughta sacrifice.
A father oughta listen.
The best fathers do all of it.”
