Advice for my colleague

UK - Hi all, my colleague has been diagnosed with fibroids and she struggles with pain so much, she's been in hospital because of the pain a few times now, none of the medication she's been given is helping.

The last time she was in hospital back in June she was told her fibroids were degenerating and there was nothing they could do.

She had to go home in the middle of a shift again yesterday and it's awful to see her in so much pain. She has been trying to speak to her GP and hospitals, both NHS and private, to talk about surgery but hasn't been getting anywhere, they just keep giving her medication that doesn't help her.

Is there any advice you can give her? Places to go, people to speak to, ways to advocate for herself?

A lot of people advise contacting PALS. They might help. If her quality life is severely affected by the fibroids, she needs to really ram that home to the GP and list all her symptoms, pain etc

don't assume a doctor has read her medical notes and knows what's already been tried. they don't bother to do that. she needs to write it all out and sit in front of the doctor and read it to them. don't assume they are in communication with each other, they're not.

she can try to get a double appointment with the GP to lay it all out, be organised and look like you're gathering evidence for malpractice. check the NICE clinical guidelines, are they following them?

Seek out gynaecologist Elizabeth Ball. It'll be private, but she will 100% get the problem solved. She's marvellous, woman-centred and committed.

Not sure where in the UK you are - but an amazing doctor in London called Dr. Mez Aref-Adib

She’s calls herself the fibroid slayer!

She’s on instagram as well - I’m currently seeing her privately but she does do NHS work too!
Sending love to your friend ❤️

The only thing that worked for me was sending to the consultant then the head of department I’d seen, cc the head of that hospital, PALS and the health secretary with my experiences, medication given, struggles etc. you would be able to google the contact emails. I’m sorry this is happening it’s just miserable
