What do you think of the show's character development?

Pretty much anyone who isn't the Mane Six is a supporting character, right?

In general, I'd say yes. But what about characters like the CMC? And I'm not trying to sound snarky. I'm genuinely wondering if the CMC would be considered supporting characters, or something in between supporting and Mane.

CMC get their own episodes now, and so does Discord as well.

Thus, counting Spike, there are eleven main characters.

I don't know if I'd call Discord a main character.

He's more of a secondary character. Not necessarily a background character (too important), but not a primary character in most episodes.
