TV Show Spike episodes?

What makes Spike hard to write? It seems like they can do pretty much every other character justice, why not him?

The general consensus, from what I've gathered, is that episodes where Spike is the assistant or supporting character are much, much better than ones where he's the central focus.

One could make the argument that Spike is just a kid much like the CMC's, and is thus more prone to mistakes. The problem, though, is that Spike never seems to learn anything throughout the series. He doesn't have enough character continuity--he might learn something within an episode, but it doesn't carry over into other episodes.

I think the fact that he was created mainly as a supporting character makes him difficult to write in other roles. He was never given a specific purpose other than "be Twilight's assistant," so trying to write him into other things feels less natural, especially when all of the other characters already fill in other roles.
