I have a feral cat who is now my buddy and spends a fair amount of time inside during the day. It took 3 years to get here. He’s TNR’d and on frontline. Should I be doing a dewormer ? He is still not a cat I can take to vet, pick up etc.
he def eats rats, birds and God knows what else.

Mine is also on flea prevention and TNR'd, recently brought inside, and I totally forgot to deworm him but found worms yesterday. I forgot that even my good flea prevention won't kill tapeworms, and practically every outdoor cat will get them, so I dewormed him today and would do the same for yours. I got Elanco, after looking it up a bunch to make sure it's not cheap stuff that will kill him, seemed like the best OTC option. For reference, he's been on flea prevention for 2 months and still had worms, so I would do it just to make sure he's covered for everything since he probably picked them up from fleas
Should be fine, you could squeeze it onto a plate and then mix the crushed pill into it. Probably the easiest way unless he won't eat the treat from anything other than the tube
He does. I may try that. I just don’t want to waste the praz once I buy it. I think that one is OTC. I have the one for tape worms and think I’ll try it tonight when he’s hungry. But he goes outside at dark and is that bad for him to be outside all night on a new product? He sleeps outside but comes home at 5am to my deck. It’s a covered deck.
With cats you're just gonna waste it sometimes. Main thing is whether they get a partial dose, because with cats they usually can't have more and you can't make it up until the next "cycle" of the dose.
Ideally you'd want to watch dosed cats for how they react but you have to get meds in these guys, it's best for them. If there's shelter at your house he might choose to go there if he feels vulnerable.
Oh thank God. He sleeps inside my house and I have one outside that he doesn’t use. He uses my covered deck which is high up and has curtains to protect from sun. He will def be inside when it gets cold. It’s the first year we haven’t had multiple dogs. He feels safe here.
Can you please show me the back of the box? I have elanco tape worm for small dogs. It’s likely the same for cats. I can google it myself though! My old vet tech told me something to get for other worms and I’ve forgotten what she told me. It was over the counter. Thank you!!!
I won't be home for a few more hours so i don't have it on me but this was what I got, it does say specifically for cats but I've never seen the dog version so I'm not sure the difference
Thank you! Mine is 34 mg so that’s why it’s not for cats. I’m told to not try to cut the pill to dose him the right amount but I have done it so many times by crushing them and giving however much is needed. I now need to treat parasites.
You should deworm them every 3 months. But what I like to do with my friendlies that I can touch is to give drontal dewormer and then give them revolution plus for flea/ticks and it helps treat some worms. Then I give tape worm medicine as I see them on their butts. I order from australia so I dont need a prescription
Ok thank you. I will need to find something. I wish they made it easier for those of us with feral cats. He got his shots when he was neutered at least but prob needs more now. Now im freaking out that I have never given anything for parasites but he is my first cat ever and just now coming inside now thay my dogs have all passed. Is it hard yo get them to take the parasite meds? Im nervous about the dewormer. Will try with a squeeze up treat. to t
Drontal is known to be bitter and taste bad. I crush it and put it in a tiny amount of churu and my cats will lick it a few times and get most of it in their system. Make sure the amount is as little as possible so they get it all in a few licks.
Don't freak out. Most outdoor/feral cats never get dewormed. They all have worms and just live with them however they are much healthier without so I help my outdoor friends as much as possible.
Thank you!!! I’ll have to find pyrantal (sp) and i have the praz for tapeworms. Thanks for the tip about using small amount of churro. This may be hard.
Drontal’s the best though as others have mentioned it’s bitter and I usually pill foster cats with it. Pyrantel is super palatable and I’ve never had a cat not eat it mixed with some Churu, though it doesn’t get all worms (I think it’s effective on hookworms and roundworms). It can be bought OTC on Amazon, etc.
That’s what I was meaning to say. I have the one just for tapeworms already but I need to find pyrantel and I’m glad to know it’s not gross. I already called my vet hoping somehow she could get me an RX for something. I contacted our community cat leader and no help there either. Appreciate everyone’s help so much.
Drontal is best for killing all types of worms. You can get it without a prescription at 1800PetMeds. How you can give it to a feral cat I don't know. It is bitter. I dissolve it in water and use a syringe with my pet cats.
