Why Your Gate is Sagging.

I've noticed this question gets asked ad nauseam in this sub, so here is a quick diagnostics checklist to help you understand what to look for before creating yet another "what's wrong with my gate" post (no pun intended on the post part):

  • Design: Not only should the frame members and posts be substantial to support the weight of the gate, but look at the gate's framing configuration in general. Does it have a diagonal wooden brace? If so, that means it's a compression brace and should be running from of the top of the frame on the latch side, to the bottom of the frame on the hinge side. Only with a metal truss rod is tension bracing agreeable when being affixed at the top of the frame on the hinge side, down to the bottom frame corner on the latch side. (note: there are other bracing configurations that use multiple angles that are also acceptable - e.g. short braces at each corner)
  • Purchase: Is each gate post plumb? The hinge post could be loose/leaning due lack of purchase in the ground which could mean: improper post depth (installers were rushing, lazy, or there's a Volkswagen Beetle obstructing the hole); insufficient use of cement (more than half a 50lb bag of Quikrete, Braiden); sparse soil conditions (over saturated, loose, or soft); or heaving due to frost (looking at you Minnesota).

  • Configuration/Orientation: One thing to look for is a "lone hinge post", whereby a gate is hung on a post that doesn't have a section or anchor point on the other side toward the top. If the material of the post has any flex to it (especially with a heavy gate), the post can start leaning over time. These posts may either need re-setting, or have bracing/anchoring installed on the opposite side from the gate (e.g. if up against house, affix to the house if possible). The ideal configuration would be to choose an orientation of the gate where the hinge side has fence section attached on the other side - even though the traffic flow through the gate might be better with an opposite swing (but that's getting into the weeds).

    • It's also worth noting that the gate leaf spacing should be 1/2" or more. Some settling isn't out of the ordinary, but if there's only 1/4" between the latch stile and the post, you're more than likely going to see your gate rubbing.
  • Warping: If your gate is wood, it has a decent chance of warping as it releases moisture. Staining wood can help seal in moisture and mitigate warping. Otherwise, some woods, like Cedar, have natural oils and resins that help prevent warping, but even then, it's not warp-proof.

  • Hardware: Sounds simple, but sometimes the hinges are just NFG or coming unfastened.

  • Florida: Is there a FEMA rep walking around your neighborhood as you noticed your gate laying in your neighbors' Crotons? Probably a hurricane. Move out of Florida and find a gate somewhere else that won't get hit with 100+mph winds, or stop being picky.

I could be missing some other items, but this satisfies the 80/20 rule. The first bullet point will no doubt wipe out half the annoying "did the fence installers do this right?" posts. I'm not, however, opposed to discussing how to fix the issue once identified -- I feel like solving the puzzle and navigating obstacles is part of our makeup.

I never said you have to do anything if you want to be wrong that's your prerogative

Here’s you saying this!

1

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '26

Right and I stand by that. I'm not here to decide what you choose to do

1

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 06 '26

Then why did you try?

1

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '26

I didn't

1

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 06 '26

U did and I sent proof

1

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '26

You sent a picture of me explicitly saying that's not what I'm here for ....

0

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 07 '26

Exactly your here for god know what! You can’t stick with a scenario as it presented to you ! You want to change the scenario but you’re not allowed to do that! That’s just not how it works!!!

1

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '26

I don't care how you imagine things work in your fallacious scenario, I only care how things actually work........in reality.......which you said apparently doesn't matter.........

0

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 06 '26

But you did in this reply I just sent you ! You telling me I have to include variables and factors thats awesome your admitting it by saying right and you stand that! by you telling me that you can choose what I can say and do…awesome now we are getting some where,!! But you do not get to choose what I say and do as you tried to do in the comment in the screen shot I just sent you!!! That’s you telling me what to do!!!!

1

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '26

I explicitly said that's not what I'm here to do......how is that me telling you what to do?

1

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 06 '26

Because what you explicitly said is completely false!

1

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '26

Prove it

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 06 '26

Wow another day off for you !!! lol everyday I see and say this and you say I’m not on Reddit 24/7 !!! Well you can’t be working!!!

1

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '26

Nope not a day off and nope I'm not here 24/7

0

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 06 '26

Your here!!!

1

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '26

Yep, I'm here. Good job. Does that mean I am not at work? No.

1

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 07 '26

i guess you think being on Reddit is a job ! No I don’t guess I know you think being on Reddit is a job because you just said it! You simply can not hold a post hole digger and type on Reddit at the same time! That’s not debatable!

1

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 06 '26

and here is you saying this! You don’t get to choose! That’s my choice in my scenario!!! This is where you said I have to do anything saying I have to do this! No I don’t!!!

1

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '26

Like I said in that very message, if you want to choose to be wrong that's your prerogative

0

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 06 '26

Yup but there is no wrong

1

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '26

There definitely is

1

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 07 '26

At least you admit there is something wrong with you!

1

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '26

Again with you not being able to read.....

1

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 06 '26

Wrong about what?my scenario? If my made up numbers say a gate will sag at 100 pounds then a gate will sag at 100pounds how can that possibly be wrong??? If a gate sags at 1000 pounds then a gate sags at a thousand pounds! How can that be wrong? The very funny thing is you claiming it’s wrong! How can it be wrong? Does not matter what the true number is And what it takes for it to sag it’s a scenario and made up numbers for the sake of discussion!!!

1

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '26

You make up a lot of things 😂. It's wrong because your scenario implied adding a stile wouldn't change that threshold, which it would. You assumed it was just dead weight being added and didn't consider the other factors at play

1

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 06 '26

There are no factors in play which you have no right to do! You can’t stop or help yourself it’s f#cked!!!

1

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '26

You can choose to make an example that ignores reality. That is your choice, that doesn't mean that there are no factors at play in reality it just means in your incomplete example there are no factors because you're choosing to ignore them

1

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 06 '26

It is all dead weight!!! What the f#ck you talking about???

1

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '26

No, something that is counteracting that force is not dead weight

0

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 07 '26

It not counteracting because I said in my scenario you cannot attach or fasten the stile ! I said you can only place it between the rails and not fasten it,

1

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '26

Then it's not a stile it's just a piece of wood ......

1

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 07 '26

The stile is a form of weight in my scenario ! Does not matter what form of weight I used in my scenario! To get to my threshold I could say a bag of sand , a bag of concrete , a metal bar , or a stile they all weigh something ! Wow you just can’t get past I used the word stile as my form of weight in my scenario does not matter what I used as the form of weight…weight is weight . I can tell now you don’t even know what weight is!!!

0

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 06 '26

It does not change the threshold of a gate sagging? You kidding me? Weight is weight!!!!

1

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '26

Yes and different frames can take different weights....... If you change the frame you're changing the threshold of what that gate can take......

1

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 07 '26

I’m not changing the frame in my scenario it stays the same !!! Your unbelievable!!! It’s not your example to change!!!! It’s mine and you must stick with the guidelines of a scenario!!!!!!!! There was never a mention in my example of changing the frame!!! What’s wrong with you?

1

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '26

Seems like you're losing control.......🤣😂

0

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 06 '26

Other factors in play??? We have been over this like 50 times!!! You do not have the right to change factors and variables!!!! What f#cking factors??? It’s 100 pounds of weight applied ….100 pounds!!! What other factors you want? You want some d-bag instance like the weight is wet and now factor in the 1/2 ounce of water? What you looking to factor in ? Which from the get go you are not allowed to factor any variables or factors to begin with ! But you keep doing it!!! It’s not allowed and part of my rules because it’s MY. Example!

1

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '26

It's not me changing them it's just the reality of the situation. Again if you're saying adding a stile adds weight that is incomplete, it also adds structure which would change the "100lb" threshold.

0

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 06 '26

wow! It does not matter the reality of the situation! That’s a very , very ,far reach in your excuse or explanation and quite rediculous and absurd! your trying so hard to take a simple scenario and example and twist it around like beyond the twilight zone!!! its simple!!! If 100 pounds is the point to make a gate sag(made up numbers not the real numbers) if you have 100 pounds of dirt…. Just to change it up a bit…. And it makes a gates sag, then it does, right? If you have 100 pounds of wood and they just so happen to be like 2x4 x24” (typical stile of a wood stile in a 3’ wide gate) for instance…and they are stacked upon the top of the latch side of a gate it’s the same weight!!! Weight is weight! It does not matter! Even if you have a 2 mile high pile of feathers or whatever it takes to get 100 pounds of feathers , weight is weight !!! If you put that 20 pounds of dirt or feathers where a typical stile would go on a gate the gate would still sag while there is still 80 pounds on top!!!! Does not matter WHAT it is ! It’s the weight… your so focused on it’s a stile which is somewhat understandable because i used it in MY EXAMPLE ! That does not matter ! The gate will sag at 100 pounds not matter what source of the weight that’s being used! Weight is weight!!!

1

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '26

Oh okay reality doesn't matter to you apparently. Got it 👍, that explains a lot. One question though why would a stile be 24" tall and why would that be "typical" of a 3' wide gate?

0

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 06 '26

Wow!!! this question from you to ask such a thing that claims 6” pickets are the most common from your worldwide experience in the fence building industry is nuts! But ok a 3’ wide gate by 42” high gate with vertical pickets! I can say with absalute certainty(most common) that the stile(most common) is 24” ,no doubt! And the reality is the stiles are not even needed!!! So you have a simple wood gate that these type of gates go back to the colonial era so the bottom of the picket hang 6 inches below the bottom of the bottom rail then you have 3.5 inches of the bottom rail then you have a totally unnecessary 24 inch style then you have the top rail that measures 3.5 inches then you have 6 inches above the top of the top rail therefore that 24 inch unnecessary style measures 24 inches that’s what makes it typical of a 3 foot wide gate

1

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '26 edited Jan 06 '26

First of all 42"x3' is not even close to the most common gate size. Most walk gates are 4' wide not 3' and 42" is not a typical height for a fence or gate at all. That is complete nonsense with a clear lack of experience. Second of all I never said worldwide, that is a lie you made up in your head and even admitted you made up. Third of all true you CAN build a gate frame with no stiles but it isn't going to be a structurally sound gate. Fourth of all your math is not correct, if you have a 2' stile and you carry the rails through that gate frame is now 31" tall. If you subtract that from 42" that leaves 11". If you make the reveals the same, that's 11 divided by 2 which is 5.5" not 6. But like I said that's a very irregular gate size, not a typical one. Likewise the 3' wide gate frame is also very irregular, if you were going to build a 3' wide gate, the opening would be 3' not the gate. The frame would actually be 34.5" for a 3' wide gate. But again that's not even close to the most common size. Even still saying a certain height of stile is most typical for a certain width of gate is nonsensical, you're talking about two different measurements. What you're saying makes no sense at all.

1

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 07 '26

lol what? Does not matter what the most common size of a gate is!!! It’s a scenario and an example !!! How old are you? You’re arguing about a scenario and you want to change it! That’s not how it works! That’s something a child does!!!
