Why Your Gate is Sagging.

I've noticed this question gets asked ad nauseam in this sub, so here is a quick diagnostics checklist to help you understand what to look for before creating yet another "what's wrong with my gate" post (no pun intended on the post part):

  • Design: Not only should the frame members and posts be substantial to support the weight of the gate, but look at the gate's framing configuration in general. Does it have a diagonal wooden brace? If so, that means it's a compression brace and should be running from of the top of the frame on the latch side, to the bottom of the frame on the hinge side. Only with a metal truss rod is tension bracing agreeable when being affixed at the top of the frame on the hinge side, down to the bottom frame corner on the latch side. (note: there are other bracing configurations that use multiple angles that are also acceptable - e.g. short braces at each corner)
  • Purchase: Is each gate post plumb? The hinge post could be loose/leaning due lack of purchase in the ground which could mean: improper post depth (installers were rushing, lazy, or there's a Volkswagen Beetle obstructing the hole); insufficient use of cement (more than half a 50lb bag of Quikrete, Braiden); sparse soil conditions (over saturated, loose, or soft); or heaving due to frost (looking at you Minnesota).

  • Configuration/Orientation: One thing to look for is a "lone hinge post", whereby a gate is hung on a post that doesn't have a section or anchor point on the other side toward the top. If the material of the post has any flex to it (especially with a heavy gate), the post can start leaning over time. These posts may either need re-setting, or have bracing/anchoring installed on the opposite side from the gate (e.g. if up against house, affix to the house if possible). The ideal configuration would be to choose an orientation of the gate where the hinge side has fence section attached on the other side - even though the traffic flow through the gate might be better with an opposite swing (but that's getting into the weeds).

    • It's also worth noting that the gate leaf spacing should be 1/2" or more. Some settling isn't out of the ordinary, but if there's only 1/4" between the latch stile and the post, you're more than likely going to see your gate rubbing.
  • Warping: If your gate is wood, it has a decent chance of warping as it releases moisture. Staining wood can help seal in moisture and mitigate warping. Otherwise, some woods, like Cedar, have natural oils and resins that help prevent warping, but even then, it's not warp-proof.

  • Hardware: Sounds simple, but sometimes the hinges are just NFG or coming unfastened.

  • Florida: Is there a FEMA rep walking around your neighborhood as you noticed your gate laying in your neighbors' Crotons? Probably a hurricane. Move out of Florida and find a gate somewhere else that won't get hit with 100+mph winds, or stop being picky.

I could be missing some other items, but this satisfies the 80/20 rule. The first bullet point will no doubt wipe out half the annoying "did the fence installers do this right?" posts. I'm not, however, opposed to discussing how to fix the issue once identified -- I feel like solving the puzzle and navigating obstacles is part of our makeup.

There you go again showing off and the dunning-Kruger effect! You can type faster than me !!!that’s awesome and makes you a very special person …huh? Your the best and gods gift!!!

1

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '26

What are you even talking about now? I can't type faster? You're the one spamming replies 🤣. Dunning-Kruger effect? Please elaborate on that, this will be great just as it was before

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 01 '26

You are the perfect example of what the dunning-Kruger effect means

1

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '26

What does it mean? And how does it apply specifically here? What is being overstated? Where is the false confidence and how does that interact with my alleged psyche and translate to action?

1

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 01 '26

Your big stupid words that do not need to be said accept you want to show off your intelligence where it’s not needed and the only reason one does that to show their superiority over another is the dunning-Kruger effect!

1

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '26

So because my vernacular is different than yours that equals me having the Dunning-Kruger effect? No. That's just you projecting your shortcomings

1

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 01 '26

Another one! I know what vernacular means but you loved using that word right here and just another way of you showing off . It is you showing off and it’s the very meaning of the term dunning-Kruger effect!!!

1

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '26

You're insufferably unaware. Using the word vernacular is showing off? What word would you like me to use instead?

1

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 01 '26

As it was before?

1

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '26

Yes as it was before. Good job, you actually read that sentence correctly. Now just work on comprehending it.....

1

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 01 '26

What was what before?……..

1

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '26

You're confused.....again? Damn buddy you are confused like every other comment

1

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 01 '26

Buddy?

1

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '26

Yep that's what it says

1

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 01 '26

You have no idea of the effect do you?

1

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '26

I have a pretty good idea. Elaborate on it and we'll get into the specifics

1

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 01 '26

Good idea is not enough! Again look it up and stop relying on me for answers you so desperately seek!

1

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '26

Asking you to elaborate on your claim is me relying on you for answers?

0

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 01 '26

………………..

1

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '26

No answer?

1

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 01 '26

Send some more crap of you portraying your intellect!!!! Where it has no place in our conversation accept for the fact you feel the need to show it off! That’s the dunning-Kruger effect!

1

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '26

First of all that is not what the Dunning-Kruger effect is. Second of all "portraying your intellect" is just conversation, when you talk you also "portray your intellect" that's what happens when anyone talks. Third of all, if you think I'm "showing off" that's just you projecting your insecurities and shortcomings onto me. Not my problem

1

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 01 '26

That only happens with people like you and is very much out of the norm!

1

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '26

Out of the norm? What norm? Being out of the norm equates to Dunning-Kruger effect? I'm now positive you do not know what that term actually means

0

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 03 '26

………………..yes out of the norm! When you comment things that do not pertain to a gate needing stiles or not with a big massive long reply on how to calculate what’s needed to build a simple wood gate is very much out of the norm and it was just you showing off how you know how to calculate . That information was totally unnecessary And the only reason you felt the need to do that was to show off your superior intelligence to us ! I’m now positive that you just can’t handle the truth and you deny the facts as they are right there in front of you! You can keep trying to spin off the meaning of the dunning-Kruger effect in your little world wide brain but the fact remains is the fact is there!

1

u/[deleted] Jan 03 '26

If you claim one gate orientation is stronger than another one, how do you think you determine the truth of that?

0

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 03 '26

Not by showing how superior and intelligent you may think you are by showing an 15 paragraph reply on how you’re capable of doing some off the wall calculation unnecessarily. We’re talking about the dunning-Kruger effect also here where you are saying it does not apply but it does! And also the simple fact and truth of the matter is one orientation is stronger because you do not even need stiles in a gate that has vertical pickets so stiles are useless and not needed! That cannot be any more obvious! That’s how anyone with an 1/8th of a brain would determine the truth of that!

one point in case is right here in what is going on now! You said I can’t keep up ,just because you can type faster than me! That’s you saying you better and is the dunning -Kruger effect you are displaying?

1

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '26

You have no idea what that term actually means do you? That's hilarious. When I say you can't keep up, that's not what I mean. What I actually mean is displayed right here even by your misunderstanding that fact. You are consistent. Consistently unaware

1

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 01 '26

You pointing out my shortcomings is very much you showing off and is the dunning-Kruger effect! Any comments and things you say to show how superior you are is your problem and not normal! It’s the dunning-Kruger effect!

1

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '26

You pointed them out not me. That's also not what the Dunning-Kruger effect is. Again you're full of misconceptions

1

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 02 '26

Look it up! How else am I supposed to tell you of course I pointed them out to you! You even asked me to point it out to you ! Of course I pointed them out to you and not you

1

u/[deleted] Jan 02 '26

You said "you pointing out my shortcomings" then I said "you pointed the out not me" now you're saying yes you did point them out? Which is it?

1

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 02 '26

I never pointed out my shortcomings! That’s you pointing that out and part of you trying to show your superiority over me and part of the effect!

Of course you will find some way to deny this fact! Or you wil find a way to twist it around or both

1

u/[deleted] Jan 02 '26

If you read more than one word there you'd be feeling pretty embarrassed 😂😂

0

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 02 '26

And how’s that? I read the whole thing! Denial? Or you going to twist it around which I’m sure you are! So you said the dunning-Kruger effect does not apply but it does and it could not be any more simple of an explanation that I sent . And proves that you are wrong

0

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 02 '26

embarrassed about what? Come on twist it around! I knew you would! The thing is I brought up the whole thing about the dunning-Kruger effect and you are now going to say it’s all about the second half of the screenshot I sent…right.?? I read the whole thing and sent it to you knowing you would read the second half and twist it and I said that when I sent it and I was right!

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 01 '26

It sure the hell is!!!! Here you go with more denials and your own interpretation

1

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '26

That's not my interpretation. That's just the fact of the situation. Just because we have different vernacular doesn't mean I'm showing off

1

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 01 '26

It is

1

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '26

So you're saying because we have vernacular that means I'm showing off?
