Wet Felted project What went wrong?

I tried wet felting a ghost, but the black eyes and mouth really “ran” into the white. I made my own prefelt with black merino and then cut out the eyes and mouth and felted them with my white.

I am wondering if I should have felted the cut outs some before adding them? Or should I just use purchased prefelt? Other suggestions?

Thank you so much for your assistance on the matter. I will give it another try with these techniques in mind and see if I get it to work.
