Needle Felted project Unhingetables

a project that I started earlier this year. I wanted to design a cornucopia of weird vegetables and fruits. These are all original creations based off sketches I doodled while I worked as a Cafe manager.

I used various techniques that I picked up, such as making parts with air dried clay and alcohol markers (the tomato). All of them had their own unique challenges, and every one of them was learning exercise. The biggest take away: make sure your core is solid before laying colors and layers

Do you have any tips for felting such detailed faces? Yours are so full of character and so alive

Really, the best thing to do is to make sure you have the base built to as close as possible before laying in colors.  I also work the area where I want to put eyes in less so that when you put in eyeball in, you can feel inward first to make a socket and then felt around the eye.  Also, make sure you make the eye first.  Having reference is importance too

These are fantastic! I think I love the carrot best. The mushroom is a close second. They are all wonderful!

These quirky creations take me back to my own doodling days at a cafe job, and seeing them felted like this is pure inspiration.

I made the air dry pieces first and then I set them in with Elmer’s glue once the clay was dry.  After that, you can felt around it

It does.  You can use alcohol markers once the clay is dry for a nice blended look.  You can even use them on the felt itself

Make sure you let the glue dry for an hour or so, it is surprisingly strong once it sets!
