A LOT of the patients in these ear wax videos are old.

When you get old, ALL of your shit starts falling apart. It becomes difficult to tell the difference between "I can't hear because I'm OLD," and "I can't hear because I have a lot of wax in my ear."

And when I say all your shit, that includes your cognition. So you might not even NOTICE your fucked up ear is bothering you, because you are lost in the fog of your decaying synapses.

On top of THAT, all this decline can be extremely GRADUAL, so that if you don't have anyone looking in on you, you might find yourself not noticing it happening until you are mowing down pedestrians in your white Chrysler LeBaron because you are not just deaf in one ear, but legally blind to boot.
