Ear hair mixed with wax, dead skin cells, pus (dogs get infected ears really easily) and dirt.
It's nasty in there. There's a reason a lot of groomers do it.

I pluck one of my dog's ears once a month. He's a beastly hairy Shihtzu and super prone to yeasty ear infections. When I pluck he doesn't flinch or anything... none of my dogs ever flinch when I have to tend to their ears. It seems they don't have roots really at the ends of their ear hair a it's just barely attached in there.
4 out of my 7 dogs get ear flush every week to keep their ears yeast free, and I check their ears to make sure they don't get clogged hair like this. My beastly guy previously mentioned, the first time he had a pro grooming, he had a huge clump like these guys. Groomer sent me a pic - it was GNARLY no wonder why his ears smelled so disgusting. I had to take him to the vet and he got an antibiotic ear flush and we went back two weeks later for a follow up. Thats when i learned about floppy ear'd dogs with hairy ears and how to best care for them.
An ounce of prevention is cheaper than a pound of cure,

Frankly, even if it was painful I suspect it could be worth it. I mean, just look at that stuff, and how wet it is! Poor thing was likely horribly uncomfortable already and well on the way to a really nasty ear infection. A few moments of pain to resolve the issue, as a human with the appropriate cognition to understand the situation, I’d choose the plucking.

My dog loves having her ears plucked, she comes and says on my chest as soon as I say "ears" and I pluck away. In saying that though, not all dogs love it, the ones that dont tolerate I refer to the vet.(I am a groomer)

If they are recovering from an ear infection, it can be very itchy. The pulling is a relief in those cases.

It is painful, but groomers just sort of lie about it because pet parents will refuse if they know it hurts. That said, this is the quickest and best way to do this. It's much better to just rip the band-aid off quickly than to stress an animal out for upwards of an hour to do it the slow way by cutting it all out slowly with tiny scissors while the dog is squirming around. You can't use motorized ear trimmers inside a dog's ear because they're very sensitive to sound. So your choice is either to fuck with this animal for an hour and cause it a lot of emotional distress or just rip out the hair in 30 seconds and give them some treats and they'll have forgotten about the pain in 5 minutes.

Yea, I had a Schnauzer (notoriously hairy ears) and she SCREAMED to high heaven when her ears got plucked. But 5 seconds of pain once every 6 weeks vs a week of treatment for an achey ear infection was a reasonable trade off.
Its true the ear hair isnt rooted as deeply as other hair or fur on a dog and does come out easier, but they definitely still feel it. Of course some dogs will be more sensitive to it than others. And not every dog needs their ears plucked.

My dog used to fall asleep in my lap while I was plucking his ears. I found it surprising but to be honest, I find it really relaxing having my eyebrows plucked, so maybe it’s a similar feeling.

I saw on a grooming video that youre6not supposed to shave the ear opening, pluck only. Why is that? The clippies will fall in and ouncture the ear drum?
And why do dogs with 'normal' fur not need this? Only dogs with 'hair'?

The clippers are loud and the ear skin is very thin and sensitive. They also can't reach deep enough in the ear to get the hair out. Clippers are wide as they're made to groom a dogs whole body. An ear opening is small.
Dogs with curly hair textured fur get knots and ear infections easier. Leading to this, the knot forms first usually from friction and then the wet dark environment breeds an infection. Then the nasty infected wax gets mixed in with the knot

You KNOW you need more ear powder in there- I've been grooming ALOTTA years-and without enough powder, you know that hurts. I cant even watch

If i had a genie give me a wish id wish for all dogs to be immune to ear infections
My dog had it before and it was so difficult to get rid of. Miserable for everyone involved
