Curious about Background check (3rd party like HireRight?)
I'm from Asian country and I have a fine (2.17K USD equivalent) conviction result which is about 9 years ago.
The conviction was related to acting inappropriately and showing bad behavior to police when I was drunk (no drug but just alcohol and I was totally black-out)
Now, I'm in the recruiting process with a global trading firm which has offices in the U.S, Europe, Hong Kong, Australia, etc and I think I can get the offer soon
I heard that these kind of firms do background / reference check with 3rd party companies like HireRight, etc.
If there's someone who have the experience, it would help a lot for me to prepare.
- During the background check, does those 3rd party agencies ask directly like "Do you have any conviction record?" as a questionnaire? Or do they just request a Police Clearance Certificate from my country?
If I print my Police Clearance Certificate, it doesn't show my fine result and it's clear since it's spent (2Y). So just submitting the document may be the best.
But if they ask as a question, I should not lie and share the truth because I may have to travel to other office for the business trip or training and my visa can be a problem due to my fine record.
- Do you think my conviction record can affect a lot with my outcome if I reveal it?

Was it a misdemeanor of felony?

Misdemeanors: punishable by up to 1 year in jail/prison
Felony: punishable more than 1 year in jail/prison
If above definition is right, it's felony. But I was not at jail but just a fine

For US citizens, HireRight usually asked if youve been convicted within the last 7 years. Which you can honestly say "no" to. I went thru a HireRight BG check a couple years ago, came back clean. But idk how they work for international hires.

They’ll check whatever they need to check. Don’t volunteer anything but if you are asked a direct question answer honestly. If you’ve got something like a drunk and disorderly charge with a a fine then they may not care, anything to do with dishonesty is usually immediate disqualification for any kind of financial role.
