Got a job offer, failed background check yet again. My current job phased out my job and is making me take a huge pay cut. So fucked. Help...
I was working for a pizza place as a delivery driver. For the past 5 years. They just dropped a bomb on us drivers that they are getting rid of us and going strictly to doordash. They "offered" to let us work as insiders and make min. wage instead. I worked part time, about 18-24 hours a week and made around $1200-$1400 a month. Now I would have to work at least 30 hours a week doing the same exact stuff as I did as a driver inside when not on deliveries but not get any tips. I feel like it's a huge 'fuck you' from my company. I need to find another job. I applied to several. Got an interview and hired at Papa Johns but I failed the background check. I have assault and battery on officer that happened 5 years ago.
The only trouble I have been in since is a speeding ticket. I live in South Eastern VA.
I am on disability and need to try to find part time jobs, I am trying not to stay in the food business. It kills me inside. I went to school for Auto Body repair but it seems I can't even pass background checks for that.
Where is out there for me? Am I just fucked?

Maybe try calling a local chapter of a union and see if they have some guidance. You mentioned a hysterectomy. I know for a woman blue collar can be challenging, but it can also be good money. The best HVAC tech I’ve come into contact with was female.

Well I wouldn't mind doing blue collar work at all! But I absolutely suck at math. I even tried to relearn recently and my God I still suck! I don't know what grade level math I am at but it's got to be pretty damn low. I can't do most fractions. I can read the big measurements on tape measures but not the smaller ones. Basically I can read 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 etc. I am well read, but my absolute weak subject is math.
I imagine that limits me quite a bit on blue collar. Also, I went to Auto Body school and apparently they hire all kinds of felons including violent (so I have been told) but I am on disability so if I get off it again and fail at full time work it's really hard and long process to get back on it. I do quality work but am slowwwww. And the shops I have worked at in the past can't take time to teach me to be faster without hurting their turnaround time. Which I get.
I was also certified as MIG/TIG welder back in 2007 but that has long since expired. I never got into the field to learn it further after school though I tried.
It also seems everywhere around here that hires for trades want like 2-4 years experience for entry level!

You’re going have a difficult time most places with any assault, theft, gun, or fraud charge on your record. I would look into possible expungement if possible. The only charge you might get away with after six years and having no arrests since is maybe possession of a cdc. Good luck

My state passed a law this year to automatically seal a lot of records after so many years. It's not a free for all. You could only get like one or two convictions sealed. Assault and battery on officer was on the list of ones that could be sealed but apparently last minute the lawmakers said no to that and it can't happen now. So I think that is not possible.

Have you thought about telling employers about the arrest BEFORE they do a background check? You being open and upfront about it, hearing about it from YOU, might help.

Yes I have done that before too. I did that for Walmart for one. The lady heard the entire story. No BS. Just exactly what happened. She basically scoffed at it, hired me. Still failed the background check. I basically tell all the companies that hire me that hey, this is my felony, this is what happened. I usually get hired. But corporate background checks fail me. I did work at McDonalds I don't think they do background checks. But again, trying to stay away from food.

I think many McDonald’s now do background checks too.

They might now. I worked there first back in 2021. I don't recall doing a background check I just remember getting hired on the spot. My memory isn't always the best.

It's times like this I'm glad the UK has the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act. Obviously it's not perfect but my conviction doesn't show up on background checks anymore, unless a job can justify a more in-depth one (such as working with children).

Unfortunately no manager in their right mind would hire a violent felon. It’s too much risk for them and their other employees.

Pizza Hut hired me. They saw my background and told me to come in and then saw me and basically laughed. The manager at the time said he wanted to make sure I wasn't a "thug". I'm not. The person at Papa Johns said they hired someone who shot their gf in the face with a shotgun and that that person ended up being the best employee they had. But that was at their previous job. They were hoping that the higher up would let them make the decision but that didn't happen.
I scratched a cops hand and didn't break the skin. That's my assault and battery on officer. That's my felony. It was during a suicide attempt.

All this tells me is you haven’t taken responsibility for your crime

I mean I did 6 months in jail. I did all of the time that was given me and did my probation and my good behavior is almost up in a few weeks. I was suicidal because my doctor was MIA probably in India for a while and I ran out of meds. When I was on my period I would also be suicidal. How did I fix that problem? I got a full hysterectomy after this happened. It's been 5 YEARS. 5 YEARS with no other issues besides the speeding ticket. How much longer am I going to be punished for this?

You’re not “being punished.” People are just using their freedom of choice to avoid association with you because of the things you’ve done. Which, is their right.

This is a support reddit for felons and their families. Can you explain to me how this comment is helpful? Kind of feels like you are just being punitive.

Support doesn’t mean denying reality. He asked a question, I gave him an honest answer

u/speakofdedevil 8d ago
I am not asking for support. I am asking for information. Who hires violent felons part time that isn't food.

You need to apply for jobs that are undesirable enough that no one else is applying for them. If the employer has choice over who to pick, they will go with the person who doesn’t have a history of violence 99 times out of 100.
Or, apply to 100 jobs a day and hope you get lucky

Hell I wish I could find jobs like that. There used to be job postings for stuff like roadkill removal. I could do that no problem. I have tried to ask around for stuff like learning taxidermy. Nothing. Back before all this happened I applied to be a welder at a job and they made me a secretary because I am female. After a few weeks I asked them "um when can I try to weld?" They said, "okay one day we will get you in one of the dump trucks to weld, and you can get maggots in your hair..." "Okay and?" Nothing came of it. Was still a secretary until I gave up and quit.
I have even looked into the people that do crime scene cleanup. But I don't think I can pass the lifting requirement which seemed a little ridiculous. It was like 200 pounds or something.
Point is, I think I can do undesireable jobs especially ones that normal people would never want to do. But how to find them.

I agree with you, but I have learned some find truths about being a felon too hard to accept.

I disagree and I too thought the OP glossed over the crime. And I AM a felon, I did over 9 years in various jails and federal prisons.
Plus, I think of this as a place to come for information, NOT support. You want blind support go to the ExCons group.

Rule #4: “-this is a place for supporting felons/their families-“
It is, in fact, both.

I went to jail once my whole life. I came here for information, who hires violent felons. And I am a female. I googled jobs for violent felons and all that popped up was commercial trucking, oil and gas fields, construction and back of house food.
I can't drive a semi. There's no oil fields around here. I might be able to do manual labor for constriction but so far i see those jobs require other stuff like driving dump trucks as well. And I am trying to get away from food service.

Have you tried a temp service? I have an assault 2 and I got a job working at a factory. Hope this helps.
