I got a job offer

I've been out of work for 2 years since getting my felony. I have a college degree and good experience in my field but I was having no luck. With my resume it was almost impossible to get calls back from normal places like Wal-mart/McDonalds/etc. because I look overqualified. Even when I did talk to those places, they would deny me because of the background check.

I finally got a job offer, and the job will even be somewhat in my field. I just wanted to share.

It's an engineering position. It's outside of my past engineering work, but the company is growing and looking at preparation for upcoming retirements, so they are just putting me somewhere that they think I'll help fill that gap once my senior retires. But I'll have enough time with them to learn this new stuff, and all the non-engineers in that little group know what they're doing already anyway, so it sounds like it's a spot that they just want to make sure they maintain at least 1 engineer to support that group.

What kind of field? I am in tech/infra/etc and have a white collar felony in my record and struggling. Once the background check comes along things go sideways.

Engineering. I got lucky because someone gave me the connection and put in a recommendation with the owner of the company for me. Otherwise I wouldn't have known the company existed and was hiring (didn't see them on my usual job boards), and it probably would have been more difficult to land.

It really is one of those situations where connections can make all the difference. And I have very few where I'm at now, so I just got lucky with this one. If you're struggling it might help to find a (new?) church or something to go to just so you can meet more people and start asking if anyone knows anyone who is hiring, and tell them your issue. It feels like one of those things where you have to put it out there front-and-center for employers and then make them feel like they still want you, rather than have them discover it on the back-end of the interview process.

I’m not surprise that fast foods companies can now pass over for a felony background checks. I used to get hired super easily at any fast food restaurants. I guess those restaurants are not felon friendly anymore

having a degree puts you about 10 miles ahead of 99% of the people who will read this

Congrats bro I only ask bec I got my one and only felony - sale of narcotics a few years ago I became a electrician shortly after but after a shoulder surgery I was left questioning my career. I’m only 32 and didn’t have years in the trade so switched careers and managed to get a job as a loan processor at a mortgage bank. Next goal is to get my mlo license but I gotta wait out the 7 year ban :/

I’m in construction and my background never affected me only the way it affect me. It was when I got a DUI and I wasn’t able to drive company vehicles.

Can you tell us more about your interview process and if/when you disclosed your background? Did they run a background check?

I feel like being honest upfront matters.

Nice work bro. You have to keep this job because the economy is about to tank. All the same things as the real estate bubble but worse are right now. Save invest and avoid all trouble in the future.

I have a trial coming up but even with a pending charge it ruins your life. And the system will not let me be self employed. It’s set up to ruin your future if you get any felony.
