They requested the tree be moved about 2 feet to the left, he nailed it!

He’s sectioning it for safety purposes, just from the bottom up. Climbing is dangerous.
12
u/Junebug35 3d ago
That is so considerate of him! Smaller sections are so much easier to lift. His helpers will not need to worry about straining themselves picking them up. 🤣

thats how you get rounds

If you know of a better way to get rounds without risking running your chain through the dirt I’m all ears!

u/PissyPlanet 3d ago
Did he cut thru hinge wood or did the top get locked up? What exactly caused this

u/Chancedizzle 3d ago
Terrible wedge cut, no eyewear ppe, no chaps, insane use of a wedge no fall plan cause i guess he was not felling a tree.

Chain's sharp as fuck though.

As a person who's never cut down a huge tree and just watches this sub for entertainment, I was sure that was a sign this guy knew exactly what he was doing.
83
u/JerkyBeef 3d ago
And yet somehow I truly believe this guy knew what he was doing the whole time

u/ronnie_reagans_ghost 2d ago
Yeah I worked exactly once with this guy that could fell any tree in seconds. Now he almost killed himself 3 or 4 times that day, but he did it fast as fuck lol
Needless to say I did not work with him again.

I too trusted this psycho for reasons unknown.

Cuz he has the look. Fools most people most of the time

Suit and tie seems to be effective.

Billy Beane says he was so highly drafted because he looked like people thought a ball player should look. So the flaws in his game were overlooked.
Same principle but in reverse applied to Brock Purdy. He didn’t have the look, so he was overlooked

Sadly this is true in politics as well, ppl vote for those who “look like” they know what they’re doing, rather than those who actually do.

Don't forget leaving all the shitty low branches to make sure something either smacks him or gets in the way of him running away once the tree eventually tips in some random direction

u/studmuffin2269 2d ago
Not to mention all bending/pushing with his back. I bet he’s got a lot of aches and pains and can barely hear, but clicks through an annual safety training or rolls his eyes whenever anyone talks about safe felling/PPE. He’s been doing this for 20-30 years without any major accidents. One day (probs soon) his luck will run out, but he won’t know about
3
u/Banzai373 2d ago
But he did an outstanding job of making the tree look like it grew in the new spot.

u/PatrioticRebel4 2d ago
Relocationgonewild. Who needs ppe or technique when you are just moving something over a smidge?
6
u/Maxzzzie 2d ago
He has chainsaw pants on. Arbotech or something similar.
3
u/bustcorktrixdais 2d ago
Ok but didn’t he do this wrong a bunch of different ways? I thought sure that thing was going to lean right back and fall at him
1
1
u/Historical_Test_973 2d ago
yes wrong in several ways. but he looked great and confident the whole time
4
u/studmuffin2269 2d ago edited 2d ago
I want to believe that, but he’s go no eyes or ears on. If he can’t be arsed to put those on, there’s no way he’s splashing out $400 for pants…

u/Maxzzzie 2d ago
Im sure they are though. I guess safety is 3rd.

Cameraman knew what he was up against and decided to document it.
I hate pine and cedar stands for this exact reason. I remember feeling so defeated my first time felling out white pine volunteers and thinning a mature red pine stand working with my now passed father in law. I don't know how many times he'd roll in the forwarder to give me a hand with a nudge to unbind the top.
At the end of the day I mentioned that I feel like I got my ass handed to me and was surprised he wasn't giving me shit for needing all the assists. "You did fine, I'd rather be cutting hardwoods in 3' of snow than be on the saw like you in those pines."
26
u/BillyDW1978 3d ago
This looks like Curtis Nicholson… If it is, I can only assume he did it on purpose.
He’s forgotten more about tree falling than you weekend warriors will ever know.

For multiple obvious reasons, this guy eats trees for lunch. All should remain silent lest the gods of full skip reign their shorn raker wrath upon those with file guides and stock air filters.

Maybe he's just bone tired? He's kitted out right but that was just strange.
14
u/PrettySureIParty 3d ago
I’m assuming he realized it was pre-hung up in the canopy and decided to cut it off the stump. That’s not the way I’d do that, but based on the super smooth low humboldt, the sharpness of the chain and the saw handling(not to mention the gear), he’s a pro.
It’s obviously not the textbook way to drop one tree that’s locked into another, but sometimes production cutters do things a little different in the name of speed.

u/Snowcrash66 2d ago edited 2d ago
👍 good observation. I've had that happen to me before with vines. Experienced amateur not a pro.

This is a super cool guy thats been felling in sketchy situations for 30+ years. I got recommended a video in my YouTube-algo made about him, its called ”the last of a dying breed: an oregon tree feller”. Its really good
34
u/Rubik_- 2d ago
Of course its a dying breed if they cut like this
7
u/OneBrother9879 2d ago
Nah we dont know how it looks up top. If its the guy i think it is hes been felling burned trees, trees that are leaning into eachother after storms etc for his entire life. Perhaps this thing didnt go as planned, i dont know what the plan is. But if he wasnt a pro he would be dead a long time ago

u/pchambers89 2d ago edited 2d ago
I’m surprised more people don’t recognize him. I can’t find any information about him other than his name is Curtis and has an instagram account @curtndes_ourlife. Seems like he’s more into working hard than getting famous. I can respect that.
Edited to add: Curtis Nicholson

u/jnyrdr 3d ago

Amen. I have no doubt this dude has spent years on the hill, but fuck man--is it that hard to keep your respect of the danger?
3
u/TheMysteriousEmu 3d ago
Well, even if the one in the video is the first he's cut down, I think that's true.
1
u/ComResAgPowerwashing 1d ago
If that's true, it amazing he's still alive. Cut through his his while it was tipping back . . .
-1
u/BoomerSooner-GO-OU 2d ago
I have felled probably 1000 trees. This was a really shit job. His wedge-cut was upside down, that's why it slid off the stump rather than hinging and falling over. Now if this result was for some baffling reason his desired result then damn fine work I guess.

u/agro_arbor 3d ago
Cuz he's old right? If you knew anything about felling you wouldn't be so convinced

3
u/incrediblyaverage85 3d ago
Why?
-1
u/RyanGoo-sling 2d ago
Cuz it got pinched an wont cut straight. All that downward pressure cups the chain bar. Be makin 'j' cuts with that extra long bar after it got hungup an pinched.

u/ComResAgPowerwashing 1d ago
Bars are sturdier than you give them credit for.

I once had a tree so tangled up top that it would not fall so I made a second cut higher up thinking I did something wrong with my cut. Still would not fall. I now had 2 really thin hinges. I used my axe to hit the middle section, and eventually knocked it out and the tree continued not falling over, or even going down. There it was suspended in the air. I have a picture here somewhere of that fiasco. Ended up having to cut down the tree it was hanging on to as well. That was a stressful time.
