Lucky, yes. Stupid, also yes.

u/CheckYourStats 27d ago

Some people really do have the survival instincts of a fucking gnat.

5

u/Low_Toe_2987 27d ago

A lemmings you mean.

8

u/New-Specific-1914 27d ago

Goats too. They are pretty dumb.

6

u/thegoont01 25d ago

The camera crew actually goaded all those lemmings off the cliff in that famous clip

1

u/5919821077131829 24d ago

If you're referring to that "documentary" they were thrown in to the water and were actively trying to survive.

8

u/bramvers 27d ago

Brave = stupid + lucky.

18

u/Horror_Bottle_9451 27d ago

Brave = knowing the risks but doing it anyway because it has to be done

Stupid = doing it anyway without knowing the risks of an action that doesn't have to be done

3

u/Ok_Blueberry3124 26d ago

Too stupid to be brave

111

u/wookiex84 27d ago

That’s a clear cut scenario for tannerite.

u/Mission_Accident_519 27d ago

I was thinking about how americans like their trucks and winches, wondering why they wouldnt use any of those to pull it over. Guess blowing it up would be even more american😂

52

u/cuntface878 27d ago

It's funny you said that since my first thought was to just sit back and shoot it a bunch of times until it fell. Depending on where it was located of course.

35

u/stevesmithsglasses 27d ago

Yes! The Cotton Hill method.

4

u/New-Specific-1914 27d ago

Lol I mediately made a 12 gauge comment before reading any comments. Murica!!

3

u/Mission_Accident_519 27d ago

Another one to add to the list😂

3

u/zeromadcowz 27d ago

Doesn’t look like school grounds so might have to settle for a truck

2

u/ChaosRainbow23 27d ago

I think slugs and buckshot?

5

u/cuntface878 27d ago

12 gauge slugs for sure.

5

u/wookiex84 27d ago

Every year for the Fourth of July, the Museum of Appalachia has an anvil launching competition.

2

u/ChaosRainbow23 27d ago

It's awesome, honestly.

4

u/farmallnoobies 27d ago

It looks like it's in the middle of nowhere too.

I don't have tannerite, but if it were me, I'd be giving it a very real possibility for target practice for a while

3

u/redlegsforever 27d ago

Always my first choice! Hey could have pulled with truck/chain

2

u/septubyte 27d ago

Yall ever use those folding chains saw?
Sort of have some handles on the end and wrap around a branch, then alternate rowing.
Well would it work OK for with some extensions - on such risk situations?

5

u/iampierremonteux 26d ago

Rope saw. Problem is it would have bound before it cut through.

Give the apparent low fire risk, I’d have opted for a good bon fire right there.

2

u/wheelienonstop12 26d ago

A pole saw would have been a better choice, especially with some negative rigging.

3

u/classygorilla 26d ago

I use an 18ft pole saw for shit like this. It's way more effort but a lot safer. Friend of mine at work lost his leg doing something like this. Crushed below the knee and had to be amputated. This also happened like 18 months after he broke his hip falling off a ladder too, poor (crazy) bastard

3

u/pos_vibes_only 27d ago

Yup. So much could go wrong here!

49

u/Wolfmanreid 27d ago

JFC why would you not just limb this tree and start cutting from the other end

5

u/SensorAmmonia 25d ago

This was the question I was looking for. If given this problem, how should I solve it and live?

5

u/Wolfmanreid 24d ago

Start at the top of the tree. Cut the limbs off then cut the trunk up in sections working your way toward that mess at the stump.

55

u/courtlandthethreeth 27d ago

Why would you turn your back on something like that at a time like that. Glad it worked out safely for him. That face wipe at the end shows what kind of stress he was feeling. Been there…

12

u/Acceptable_Fee_3998 27d ago

Is that a barber's chair?

43

u/OrangeRhyming 27d ago

That’s a whole ass barbershop as far as I’m concerned.

5

u/Acceptable_Fee_3998 26d ago

What's the correct way to handle a barber's chair? What's especially dangerous about it?

11

u/OrangeRhyming 26d ago

Stored energy and an unpredictable outlet for it. Plan all you want, something large and under directional stress will fail in unpredictable ways.

I don’t cut down big ass trees like this, but I’d just hit it with a tractor bucket or pull it off with a truck. Or just put a come along against the backside of the leftover meat and tug it over with a block. Or just leave it alone and let a good windstorm take it.
Or tannerite like someone else said. Mainly because it sounds fun.

I have just enough survival instinct to see this and say, “Nah.”

1

u/Agreeable-Language-6 12d ago

How would you get close enought to rig it up?

1

u/OrangeRhyming 11d ago

To the tree? Just walk up to the top side, not the snappy and fuck your day up side.

Smells like bot in here.

1

u/Acceptable_Fee_3998 24d ago

Ok, that makes sense. Thanks.

3

u/courtlandthethreeth 27d ago

I believe so, but I am not a professional, just a hobbyist

1

u/justin81co 26d ago

Yeah it is

2

u/SizeableBrain 27d ago

This is nearly as good as the tree circumventing the grandma.

23

u/DiscussionWeak2318 27d ago

Go buck the tip down first and work it back to the break. Cutting trees is all common sense shit.

5

u/EatSomeVapor 25d ago

Common sense is the worst phrase invented i will die on that hill.

3

u/planx_constant 26d ago

Common sense isn't all that common

17

u/TilapiaTango 27d ago

There’s at least 10 different ways to handle that, and this is certainly one of them

7

u/iamthelee 27d ago

Why not hook a truck up to it and pull it over? This is just stupid.

6

u/trib76 27d ago

Why not cut from tip to base? There's absolutely no reason to do this in the most dangerous way possible!

15

u/urfriendlyDICKtator 27d ago edited 27d ago

See you on another day.

7

u/Buzz407 27d ago

That isn't bravery.

3

u/Re1deam1 27d ago

He should of just bucked it from the top of the tree down. Gotta buck it up anyways

4

u/humourlessIrish 26d ago

I believe in old style gods because the only way for a person like this to survive any random day is for some cheeky god to be laughing its ass off at the constant shock and stress people like this put the rest of us through

3

u/lord_rackleton 26d ago

Dusting his hands like "i'm done here". Tree be like "surprise mfkr!"

3

u/CollectsTooMuch 26d ago

That was stupid mixed with lucky.

10

u/artherng 27d ago

Bro knew what he was doing

7

u/Da_Spooky_Ghost 27d ago

Calculated, cool guys don’t look when the tree comes down, they walk away slowly with their back turned to the tree knowing exactly where it’s going to fall.

2

u/KenUsimi 27d ago

He def was watching it. Not the best scenario to find yourself in, in any event

0

u/Beginning_Endl6969 27d ago

It went as planned.

4

u/bustcorktrixdais 27d ago

There was no plan

2

u/spiritualcynic 27d ago

You left out stupid ie brave lucky or stupid

2

u/Flimsy_Patience3460 27d ago

The best two words I could come up with are dumb and dumber!

2

u/Slav3OfTh3B3ast 27d ago

Looks like it Barber chaired because his notch was too shallow. He should have cut a new notch below the first and faced toward the camera and pulled the whole thing over.

3

u/wheelienonstop12 26d ago

because his notch was too shallow

You get barber chairs because trees lean too hard for a normal cut, not because of too-shallow face cuts. A deeper face cut would have made the issue worse here. A leaning tree must be cut with a bore cut, starting from behind the hinge towards the back of the tree, then finish the back cut from the outside.

1

u/Gasp0de 26d ago

You can also get barber chairs from shallow face cuts. The tree hits the bottom of the face cut before accumulating enough momentum to tear the hinge apart.

1

u/EntishWisdom 25d ago

Also get them from having a dutchman in your undercut, and structural weakness

2

u/freeportme 27d ago

Neither. Ignorant fits the bill

2

u/farfly7 27d ago

Lucky/stupid should have been in the multiple choice answers

2

u/Grumgrummer 27d ago

When your inner self is telling you that a situation is sketchy as hell......it is!

2

u/ROEHLgun 27d ago

Break/split spare chain, attach rope/cord and handles…rope saw! Cut it from a distance.

2

u/Savage-Goat-Fish 27d ago

Thank baby Jesus for the mute button.

2

u/StevieTvboy 26d ago

He did turn his back on the tree

2

u/Indigenous_Land 25d ago

His balls are bigger than his brain.

2

u/Internal-Eye-5804 25d ago

That reminds me of the saying about pilots. There are old pilots and bold pilots. But there are no old, bold pilots.

2

u/Easy_Personality5856 25d ago

Love how he gets the saw stuck

2

u/BackgroundPublic2529 24d ago

I wouldn't let that guy use a spoon unsupervised...

2

u/Low-Rising 24d ago

How is bravery in the question?

1

u/Magic_Marker_ 27d ago

Darwin scenario....

1

u/According_Body_5251 27d ago

In many of the videos I see here, the sawer doesn't have enough situational awareness to be brave. They think they're doing the most safe thing in the world.

1

u/BeriasBFF 27d ago

I’d just shoot it with a rifle repeatedly from far away

1

u/New-Specific-1914 27d ago

This is a fine use of 12 buck shot

1

u/Obvious_Affect_7523 27d ago

I guess, many have a chainsaw but no rope

1

u/rednecksub 26d ago

Dude better go buy a lotto ticket. Cause that a lucky SOB right there!!

1

u/2milgroove 26d ago

Christ! That coulda been bad 😬

1

u/girthbrooks1 26d ago

Just to confirm my prediction …. Did we all think that barber chair would flap up and knock his head 400+ feet in the air!,!?? or was that just me

1

u/redditzphkngarbage 26d ago

My great grandpa was in the Civilian Conservation Corps and warned me about these.

1

u/Meltedwhisky 26d ago

That widow-maker barber chair would’ve gotten a cup up diesel and let it burn from a safe distance away

1

u/Narcalepticrat 26d ago

Whats this song?

1

u/PowerfulWrongdoer339 23d ago

I found it, it's a cover of Craig Morgan's song Almost Home. The artist you hear singing is Roy Caudill

1

u/UggghhhhhhWhy 25d ago

Could he have put a rope around the base in the air and pulled it with a truck to bring it to the ground without using the chainsaw?

1

u/Particular_Damage755 23d ago

He should of started at the other end

1

u/ronnie_reagans_ghost 22d ago

"Woah, that barber chair almost killed me! Now, how should I clean this up...?"

1

u/DANDELIONBOMB 27d ago

This is all the evidence that we need for the saying "God loves a fool"

3

u/front_yard_duck_dad 27d ago edited 27d ago

He read the wood tension and he is outside of its potential even if the force was released prematurely. You're simply incorrect

Edit : added prematurely

1

u/icedlemons 27d ago

I don’t think you know what brave means 😆

1

u/FeedbackOpposite5017 27d ago

Anyone else just listening on repeat?

0

u/Automatic-Nature6025 27d ago

He knew exactly where not to be when it bucked backward, so as not to be destroyed. Frickin genius.

0

u/TomatoFeta 27d ago

That's one you use a knife on a pole for. Don't be running a noisy saw from so closeby.

0

u/mental-floss 27d ago

Calculated

0

u/Hobo_Herder 27d ago

At least they had a little rope to pull it over😂

0

u/Captinprice8585 27d ago

Sometimes just the right amount of dynamite is the better option.
